Inside Out

The Inside Out group addresses the impact that negative body image can have on same-sex-attracted men. Over recent years, emerging research has pointed to an increase in body image problems amongst men, particularly gay and bisexual men. A poor body image can impact men's lives in various ways such as:

  • Dressing to disguise looks.
  • Over-exercising.
  • Extreme dieting.
  • Obsessive thinking about appearance.
  • Avoiding work, study, social events and sex and relationships due to feelings of unattractiveness or the compulsive need to exercise.

The Inside Out group provides an opportunity for same-sex-attracted men to share their experiences of body image in a safe and supportive environment. The aims of the group include:

  • Encouraging participants to explore their thoughts and beliefs about their appearance that feed into their body image distress.
  • Introducing and practicing skills to challenge those thoughts and beliefs.
  • Providing support and guidance on how to stop avoiding the situations and behaviours that are a consequence of negative body image and which also perpetuate negative body image.

The Inside Out body image group runs in the evening at the Peter Knight Centre, once a week for eight weeks.
