Coal ash, which contains many of the world's worst carcinogens, is what's left over when coal is burnt for electricity. An estimated 113 million tons of coal ash are produced annually in the US, and stored in almost every state — some of it literally in people's backyards. With very little government oversight and few safeguards in place, toxic chemicals have been known to leak from these storage sites and into nearby communities, contaminating drinking water and making residents sick.
VICE News travels across the US to meet the people and visit the areas most affected by this toxic waste stream. Since coal production is predicted to remain steady for the next few decades, coal ash will be a problem that will affect the US for years to come.

With the price of coal plummeting and our biggest customers turning to renewable energy, is Australia backing a loser?
When Prime Minister Tony Abbott famously declared coal to be "good for humanity" and "essential to the prosperity of Australia" there was no doubting he saw a coal-fuelled future for the nation.
And it's easy to see why: Australia has one of the world's largest deposits of coal; it provides two-thirds of our power, employs more than 50,000 people and brings in more than $40 billion a year from exports.
Yet not everyone is so upbeat. Some argue that the downturn is permanent.

Coal (from the Old English term col, which has meant "mineral of fossilized carbon" since the 13th century) is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock usually occurring in rock strata in layers or veins called coal beds or coal seams. The harder forms, such as anthracite coal, can be regarded as metamorphic rock because of later exposure to elevated temperature and pressure. Coal is composed primarily of carbon along with variable quantities of other elements, chiefly hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen.
Throughout history, coal has been a useful resource. It is primarily burned for the production of electricity and/or heat, and is also used for industrial purposes such as refining metals. A fossil fuel, coal forms when dead plant matter is converted into peat, which in turn is converted into lignite, then sub-bituminous coal, then bituminous coal, and lastly anthracite. This involves biological and geological processes that take place over a long period of time.
Coal is the largest source of energy for the generation of electricity worldwide, as well as one of the largest worldwide anthropogenic sources of carbon dioxide releases. Gross carbon dioxide emissions from coal usage are slightly more than those from petroleum and about double the amount from natural gas. Coal is extracted from the ground by mining, either underground by shaft mining through the seams or in open pits.

The Four Corners is a region of the United States consisting of the southwestern corner of Colorado, northwestern corner of New Mexico, northeastern corner of Arizona and southeastern corner of Utah. The Four Corners area is named after the quadripoint where the boundaries of the four states meet, where the Four Corners Monument is located. The majority of the Four Corners region is part of semi-autonomous indigenous American Indian nations, the largest of which is the Navajo Nation, followed by Hopi, Ute and Zuni Indian nations. The Four Corners region is part of a larger region known as the Colorado Plateau and is mostly rural, rugged and arid. In addition to the monument, commonly visited areas within Four Corners include Monument Valley, Mesa Verde National Park and Canyon de Chelly National Monument. The most populous city in the Four Corners region is Farmington, New Mexico, followed by Durango, Colorado.
The United States first acquired the area now called Four Corners from Mexico after the Mexican–American War in 1848. In 1863 Congress created Arizona Territory from the western part of New Mexico Territory. The boundary was defined as a line running due south from the southwest corner of Colorado Territory, which had been created in 1861. This was an unusual act of Congress, which almost always defined the boundaries of new territories as lines of latitude or longitude, or following rivers. By defining one boundary as starting at the corner of another Congress ensured the eventual creation of four states meeting at a point, regardless of the inevitable errors of boundary surveying. The area was first surveyed by the U.S. Government in 1868 as part of an effort to make Colorado Territory into a state, the first of the Four Corners states formed. The first marker was placed at the spot in 1912. The first Navajo tribal government was established in 1923 to regulate an increasing number of oil exploration activities on Navajo tribal lands.

When Prime Minister Tony Abbott famously declared coal to be "good for humanity" and "essential to the prosperity of Australia" there was no doubting he saw a coal-fuelled future for the nation.
And it's easy to see why: Australia has one of the world's largest deposits of coal; it provides two-thirds of our power, employs more than 50,000 people and brings in more than $40 billion a year from exports.
Yet not everyone is so upbeat. Some argue that the downturn is permanent.

The 27,000-square-mile reservation straddling parts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah has an extremely high abundance of many energy resources — particularly coal. That coal is what's burned to provide much of the Southwest with electricity, and it creates jobs for the Navajo. But the mining and burning have also caused environmental degradation, serious health issues, and displacement.

Normally competitors would be directed to our infamous Mud Pit event at this point in the Top Truck Challenge competition, but due to the 2015 California drought, the Mud Pit was replaced with the gnarly, waterless Mini Rubicon. The course was approximately 140 feet in length and packed with boulders and rocks of various sizes. To keep things exciting, there were no penalties for winching, stopping, or backing up. Instead, we gave each competitor 5 minutes to travel as far as they could. Traveling out of bounds resulted in disqualification at that point.
We also renovated the Obstacle Course for 2015: no long downhill section and an entirely dry course. But was it easier? Nope. Our demented course builders made sure this first event would be a real eye-opener for competitors. Competitors began in the lower section, which was pockmarked with evil holes, off-camber sections, and gobs of loose dirt. They then traveled to the upper section that included a pair of deep, nasty holes and the infamous “U-Turn Hill.” From there, it was into a ravine that stood guard over the finish line. Even with a 10-minute time limit this event is less about speed and more about accuracy. Who will be stopped cold?

The Industrial Change, which started in Britain in the 18th century, as well as later spread to continental Europe and The united state and canada, was based upon the availability of coal to power vapor engines. International trade expanded exponentially when coal-fed steam engines were developed for the railways and also steamships. The new mines that grew up in the 19th century depended on guys and children to work lengthy hrs in often risky working problems. There were many coalfields, however the earliest remained in Newcastle as well as Durham, South Wales, the Central Belt of Scotland and also the Midlands, such as those at Coalbrookdale.
The earliest constantly worked deep-mine in the United Kingdom is Tower Colliery in South Wales valleys in the heart of the South Wales coalfield. This colliery was created in 1805, and its miners bought it out at the end of the 20th century, to avoid it from being closed. Tower Colliery was lastly closed on 25 January 2008, although manufacturing continues at the Aberpergwm drift mine had by Walter Energy.
Charcoal was extracted in The u.s.a in the early 18th century, as well as advertisement mining began around 1730 in Midlothian, Virginia.
Coal-cutting devices were developeded in the 1880s. Before this creation, coal was mined from underground with a choice and also shovel. By 1912, surface mining was carried out with steam shovels made for coal mining.
