A transmission tower (electricity pylon in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, and a hydro tower in certain provinces of Canada where power generation is mainly hydro-electric) is a tall structure, usually a steel lattice tower, used to support an overhead power line.
They are used in high-voltage AC and DC systems, and come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Typical height ranges from 15 to 55 metres (49 to 180 ft), though the tallest are the 370 m (1,214 ft) towers of a 2700-metre-long span of Zhoushan Island Overhead Powerline Tie. In addition to steel, other materials may be used, including concrete and wood.
There are four major categories of transmission towers:suspension, terminal, tension, and transposition. Some transmission towers combine these basic functions. Transmission towers and their overhead power lines are often considered to be a form of visual pollution. Methods to reduce the visual effect include undergrounding.
"Transmission tower" is the name for the structure used in the industry in the United States, and other English-speaking countries. The term "pylon" comes from the basic shape of the structure, an obelisk-like structure which tapers toward the top, and is mostly used in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe in everyday colloquial speech. This term is used infrequently in the United States, as the word "pylon" is commonly used for many other things, mostly for traffic cones.

These towers carry six 135,000 volt power lines across the Ohio River. The tower towers are approximately half a mile apart and it would be possible for an airplane to try to pass between them if they were not marked with warning lights. Each tower has five aircraft obstruction lights and it's my company's job to keep them working.
Do not mess around on these towers! There are dangers you can't see like radiation and electrocution. After 3 months of steady research and training we determined this tower was deactivated and safe to climb, and that I was fit to climb it. The ascent took 2.5 hours and the descent 1.5 hours. This was the most unreal thing I've ever done. From my findings this is currently the World's Tallest Freeclimb of an Antenna at 475m. Sorry guys I won't disclose the location of this one. A rather long video-unintentional but I talk too much- on some recent high voltage transmission towers and poles for the layout. The towers are a kit from VectorCut. These are laser cut wood, very thin and lacy, and the kits are a bit of a challenge. I take you through some of the unique challenges during the assembly of these kits. Also shown are some scratch-built (I guess you call it that!) power poles that are used to turn the HV lines 90 degrees. They are based on prototype poles near me that do the same thing- turn lines 90 deg. to go into a substation. The insulators used are from Sommerfeldt, a German company that makes catenary and associated items. The various insulators in their product line are great for multiple types of electrical lines, poles, towers, transformers, etc. I ...
