elvis presley - its now or never (1960)
It's now or never, come hold me tight Kiss me my darling, be mine tonight Tomorrow will be too late, it's now or never My love won't wait. When I first saw you with your smile so tender My heart was captured, my soul surrendered I'd spend a lifetime waiting for the right time Now that your near the time is here at last. It's now or never, come hold me tight Kiss me my darling, be mine tonight Tomorrow will be too late, it's now or never My love won't wait. Just like a willow, We would cry an ocean If we lost true love And sweet devotion Your lips excite me, Let your arms unfight me For who knows when Well meet again this way It's now or never, Come hold me tight Kiss me my darling, Be mine tonight Tomorrow will be too late, It's now or never My love wont wait.

1960 What? by Gregory Porter
Gregory Porter is giving fans of jazz singing a reason to look forward to the coming years. His debut album, "Water", was nominated for a Grammy and it introduced us to a male jazz singer with the kind of chops to dominate the category. For several years now, Kurt Elling has been the pre-eminent male in jazz singing. With the release of Water, Porter has served notice that Elling now has some company.

Sexist Coffee Ad (ca. 1960s)
I believe the first ten seconds of this ad are quite possibly one my favorite moments of vintage footage ever. Harvey and his wife's breakfast bliss is shattered when he inexplicably rips into her coffee making ability, makes a veiled threat that he's going to start looking for other women, and then, in one of history's great passive-aggressive turns, declares "Well, see you later" and exits dramatically stage left. Of course this outburst is entirely the fault of the wife's poor culinary skills, but once her non-fazed friend turns her on to instant coffee (as opposed to, say, some counseling) the only rift in their otherwise rock-solid union is closed and the loving couple enjoy a romantic evening in their now completely dark living room. Of course we all know it's only a matter of minutes until Harvey blows up at another trivial matter, but it doesn't matter by then. Folgers has made it's point: If you don't buy their coffee, your husband will start sleeping around at the office. An axiom that remains true today.

Gregory Porter - 1960 What? (Official Music Video)
Buy Gregory Porter´s album "Water" here: www.membran-online.de With a voice that can caress or confront, embrace or exhort, Gregory Porter exhibits such an incredible degree of vocal mastery that no less a jazz luminary than Wynton Marsalis has gone on record to call him „a fantastic young singer," which makes the fact that Water (out now from Motema Music) is his recording debut even more impressive. A debut release it may be, yet Water flows with a sense of timelessness that reflects the seasoned talents of the giants of blues, gospel and soul that have influenced Porter throughout his career. Some of the singers that Porter cites as influential are familiar - Nat King Cole, Joe Williams and Donny Hathaway - and others -- such as the pastor of the church he attended as a child among them - may never realize their impact on his development as an artist. While the work of singers such as Hathaway or Cole obviously helped to shape Porter's vocal styling, his own world view, as evidenced in his seven original compositions and his striking interpretation of classic songs such as „But Beautiful" and „Skylark," adds an emotional intensity that makes each of the CD's eleven tracks speak so eloquently.

Greenwich Village Sunday - 1960
Take a stroll through the streets, parks and neighborhoods that make up Greenwich Village. Before Washington Square became the NYU undergrad film school back lot, the area was known for it's street art, spontaneous hootenannies, poetry jam sessions and neighborhood fairs. Take a walk around the Village before it became too cool for you. See more films at: www.weirdovideo.com

The text used for the narration of “Passing Through” is part of a speech Serbian scientist and inventor
Nicola Tesla delivered in 1893 at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. Though today less known than
figures like Edison and Einstein, Tesla was more or less the father of much of our modern technology, since
he among other things developed the foundations of the European electrical system based on alternating
currents and the principles of wireless radio communication.
At the time he was deeply influenced by the Austrian physicist and philosopher Ernst Mach, believing
that the world should be conceived as a whole where everything is interconnected influencing each
other. And that energy is a force that runs through everything be it inorganic matter, organisms or human
consciousness. According to this line of thought every single action has universal consequences, not unlike
what the father of modern chaos theory Edward Lorenz in the 1960’s termed ‘the butterfly effect’.
.
“Passing Through” is made at Kolding School of Design in connection to the Danish iPower-project.

Narration text:
"Like a wave in the physical world, in the infinite ocean of the medium which pervades all, so in the world of organisms, in life, an impulse started proceeds onward, at times, may be, with the speed of light, at times, again, so slowly that for ages and ages it seems to stay, passing through processes of a complexity inconceivable to men, but in all its forms, in all its stages, its energy ever and ever integrally present.
A single ray of light from a distant star falling upon the eye of a tyrant in bygone times may have altered the course of his life, may have changed the destiny of nations, may have transformed the surface of the globe, so intricate, so inconceivably complex are the processes in Nature. In no way can we get such an overwhelming idea of the grandeur of Nature than when we consider, that in accordance with the law of the conservation of energy, throughout the Infinite, the forces are in a perfect balance, and hence the energy of a single thought may determine the motion of a universe.”

X-Men: First Class Title Sequence
Inspired by classic Sixties movie titles and prompted by John Struan of Super Punch fame, I've built a 1960s style title sequence for the upcoming X-Men: First Class film.
Set during the midst of the Cuba Missile Crisis, X-Men: First Class tells the story of the first team coming together, before they would become the heroes and villains we know from the original X-Men Trilogy.
This sequence was designed to give a very brief primer on the time period, the setting, as well as show the relationships of the characters in this film, as they are very different from the previous movies and audiences shouldn't be confused as to why Professor X and Magneto, enemies in the original trilogy, are the best of friends in this prequel.
Super Punch held a contest redesigning the posters for the film, which played it safe by sticking very close to the correlation to the original trilogy, and winding up rather mundane compared to the slick trailer rife with espionage, red fear, and 60s hair. Several people were quick to make posters in the Mod, Saul Bass, and James Bond style that I had in mind, so it was decided that I'd make a title sequence instead.
And yes, that music is a very melancholic rendition of the 90s cartoon theme song.
Please visit SecretUndergroundHeadquarters.com and SuperPunch.blogspot.com for more awesomeness.
