Blasts hit Baghdad's Green Zone

Imagine a world with no running water or electricity, scorching heat and the constant fear of cholera.
Imagine a warren of alleys no wider than a cart. Cows are being milked on doorsteps, street barbers are giving shaves, pulling teeth and lancing boils. Barefoot water-sellers are bent double under their heavy goatskins.
It is 1912 and we are in old Baghdad. To us it sounds like hell. Yet Violette Shamash, born into an affluent family, adored its positive side: sleeping under the stars, hearing the call of the nightingale, smelling scents of gardenias and spices, riding to school on donkey-back.
For her it was a kind of Eden.
Violette was a privileged witness to a time when nearly 40% of Baghdad was Jewish and Jews, Moslems and Christians embraced each other's differences. Her insights into domestic life, and a society coming to terms with the 20th century, are candid, entertaining, and often very amusing. However, in 1941, disaster struck the oldest community in the Diaspora. A brutal massacre took place over two days of rioting and sounded the death-knell for the Jews of Babylon.
This slideshow contains images from Violette's book, MEMORIES OF EDEN, which not only provides a unique insight into the culture and customs of the Jews of Iraq but also shows everyday life as experienced by everyone at a time when Baghdadis lived together side by side, in mutual respect, irrespective of religion.
William Shawcross has called it "an astonishing record, telling the story of a cultivated and well integrated Jewish community in the heart of Muslim Arabia during the end of the Ottoman Empire and the British Mandate. The Peplum (or pepla plural), also known as Sword-and-Sandal, is a genre of largely Italian-made Historical or Biblical Epics (costume dramas) that dominated the Italian film industry from 1958 to 1965, eventually being replaced in 1965 by the "Spaghetti Western". The pepla attempted to emulate, or compete with, the big-budget Hollywood Historical Epics of the time, such as Spartacus, Samson and Delilah and The Ten Commandments (just as the Spaghetti westerns were imitations of the Hollywood Western). The terms "peplum" (referring to the togas or robes which the ancient Romans wore) and "sword-and-sandal" were used in a condescending way by film critics. Italian director Vittorio Cottafavi called the genre "Neo-Mythology".

Baghdad, o Bagdad, (arabo: بغداد, Baghdād, in età abbaside Dār al-Salām, "Sede della pace", in italiano antico Baldacca o Baudac) è la capitale dell'Iraq e dell'omonima provincia. È la seconda città più grande dell'Asia sud-occidentale, dopo Teheran, il calcolo della popolazione per il 2010 è di 5.402.486 abitanti[1]. Situata sul fiume Tigri a 33°20 nord e 44°26 est.

La città di Baghdad fu fondata sulla riva occidentale del Tigri tra il 762 e il 767 dalla dinastia degli Abbasidi, per volere del califfo al-Manṣūr. L'insediamento fu probabilmente realizzato sul sito di un preesistente villaggio persiano. La città sorse nei pressi di Ctesifonte, capitale dell'Impero Persiano dei Sasanidi e sostituì Damasco come capitale del califfato islamico che si estendeva dal Nord Africa alla Persia. Il nome della città ha origine incerta: secondo alcuni deriverebbe dal persiano "Dio [ha] dato" - da bagh (Dio) e dad (dato). Un muro circolare sorgeva attorno alla residenza califfale e agli uffici ad essa connessi, così Baghdad divenne conosciuta anche come "Città circolare".
Alcune generazioni dopo la fondazione, Baghdad divenne un importante centro commerciale e culturale. Secondo alcune fonti la città, alla sua acme, avrebbe contato più di un milione di abitanti. Una larga parte della popolazione era originaria dell'Iran, in particolare della zona di Khorasan. Molte delle storie narrate nelle Mille e una notte sono ambientate nella Baghdad di quel periodo, governata dal Califfo Hārūn al-Rashīd.
Baghdad fu anche per tutto il periodo califfale fra le città maggiormente cosmopolite. In essa vivevano musulmani, cristiani, ebrei, zoroastriani e pagani non dichiarati provenienti da tutto il Vicino e Medio Oriente nonché dall'Asia Centrale.
La rapida crescita della popolazione rallentò con lo spostamento della capitale a Sāmarrāʾ, cui seguirono la perdita delle province occidentali e orientali con la fine del centralismo abbaside, la "tutela" buwayhide e la dominazione dei Selgiuchidi (1055-1135).
La città rimase comunque uno dei principali centri culturali e commerciali del mondo islamico fino al 10 febbraio 1258, quando fu saccheggiata dai Mongoli guidati da Hulagu, nipote di Gengis Khan. I Mongoli massacrarono 800.000 cittadini, fra cui il califfo abbaside al-Musta'sim e distrussero vaste zone della città e i canali di irrigazione. Il sacco di Baghdad mise fine al califfato abbaside, un colpo da cui la civiltà arabo-islamica non si sarebbe mai più ripresa completamente.
Nel 1401, Baghdad fu nuovamente saccheggiata dai Turco-Mongoli, capeggiati da Tamerlano.
Nel 1534, Baghdad venne conquistata dagli Ottomani. Sotto l'Impero ottomano Baghdad cadde in un periodo di declino.

Baghdad fu parte dell'Impero ottomano fino alla fondazione del Regno dell'Iraq, sotto controllo britannico dal 1921 grazie al Mandato graziosamente accordatogli dalla Società delle Nazioni, seguita da una formale indipendenza nel 1932 e da totale indipendenza nel 1946. La popolazione della città crebbe da 145.000 abitanti stimati nel 1900 a 580.000 nel 1950. Durante gli anni settanta, Baghdad visse un periodo di crescita e prosperità grazie all'aumento del prezzo del petrolio, la principale risorsa esportata dall'Iraq.
Durante questo periodo furono costruite nuove infrastrutture, come nuovi impianti fognari, idrici e autostrade. La guerra Iran-Iraq (1980-1988) fu un periodo difficile per la città e molte risorse economiche furono destinate alle forze armate e migliaia di cittadini morirono nel conflitto. L'Iran lanciò alcuni attacchi missilistici contro Baghdad, ma essi causarono relativamente poche vittime e lievi danni.
La Guerra del Golfo del 1991 causò maggiori e più seri danni a Baghdad, in particolare al suo sistema di trasporti, alle infrastrutture energetiche e sanitarie.
Nel marzo e aprile 2003, durante l'invasione dell'Iraq, Baghdad venne pesantemente bombardata[senza fonte], e le prime forze statunitensi entrarono in città fra il 7 e il 9 aprile. Ulteriori danni furono causati dai gravi saccheggi avvenuti nei giorni successivi alla fine della guerra. Con la deposizione del regime di Saddam Hussein, la città fu occupata dalle truppe americane. L'autorità provvisoria della coalizione (Coalition Provisional Authority o CPA) creò nel cuore della città un'area fortificata di 8 km² chiamata "Zona Verde" eretta a propria sede e a quella del successivo governo provvisorio. La Coalition Provisional Authority ha ceduto il potere al governo ad interim alla fine di giugno 2004, dopo le elezioni politiche svoltesi nel gennaio di quello stesso anno.
Molti abitanti di Baghdad sono diventati insofferenti nei confronti delle forze occupanti perché i servizi essenziali come l'elettricità e la distribuzione dell'acqua, sono insufficienti e occasionali. Inoltre a causa delle disastrose condizioni igienico-sanitarie si sono verificati episodi di colera e di decessi di bambini dovuti alla contaminazione delle acque e alla scarsità di cibo.
Nella calda estate 2004, l'energia elettrica era disponibile solo ad intermittenza nella maggior parte della città. Un ulteriore motivo di scontento è la mancanza di sicurezza. Il coprifuoco imposto immediatamente dopo l'invasione è stato rimosso nell'inverno 2003, ma la città, che un tempo aveva una vivace vita notturna, quando si fa buio viene ancora considerata troppo pericolosa da molti cittadini. Fra i pericoli ci sono rapimenti, violenze sessuali e il rischio di rimanere coinvolti in combattimenti tra forze di occupazione e insorti.
Alla storia recente di Baghdad è legata la vicenda venuta alla luce nella primavera del 2004 riguardo a torture e sevizie perpetrate da soldati degli eserciti statunitense ed inglese ai danni di reclusi nella prigione di Abu Ghraib (Abū Ghurayb).

Baghdad si trova sul fiume Tigri e a 50 km dall'Eufrate in una zona prevalentemente pianeggiante. Nonostante la posizione vicina al fiume e i numerosi spazi verdi, l'influenza del deserto, situato a sud e a ovest, si fa sentire con tempeste di sabbia. Nella parte occidentale della città ci sono larghi viali, le residenze più lussuose e molti edifici governativi, le case più economiche si trovano generalmente nella parte orientale.
Storicamente Baghdad era un centro di grande importanza per il commercio internazionale. Vie commerciali dall'India, dalla Persia e dall'Europa si incontravano nella città. Oggi il ricco quartiere di Karrada è il principale distretto commerciale cittadino. Baghdad è ancora un nodo importante del traffico stradale aereo e ferroviario. Il maggiore aeroporto cittadino è il Baghdad International Airport.

Baghdad ha sempre svolto un ruolo importante nella vita culturale araba ed è stata la casa di famosi scrittori, poeti, musicisti e di altri artisti.

Fra le più importanti istituzioni culturali cittadine ci sono:
- l'Orchestra Nazionale Irachena - Le prove e i concerti sono stati brevemente interrotti dall'ultimo conflitto ma da allora sono ritornati alla normalità.
- il Teatro Nazionale Iracheno - Il teatro fu saccheggiato alla fine dell'invasione del 2003, ma è in corso di ristrutturazione.
Il teatro ricevette un grande impulso negli anni novanta quando le sanzioni ONU limitarono l'importazione di film stranieri. Più di 30 film furono convertiti in esibizioni dal vivo con un vasto assortimento di produzioni drammatiche e commedie.
Fra le istituzioni che offrono un'educazione culturale a Baghdad ci sono il conservatorio, l'Istituto delle Belle Arti e la Scuola di Musica e Danza Classica. Baghdad è anche la sede di numerosi musei che ospitavano reperti archeologici delle civiltà antiche; molti di essi furono rubati e i musei saccheggiati nel caos che seguì l'ingresso delle truppe americane nella città.

Fra i punti d'interesse ci sono:
- il Museo Nazionale Iracheno, la cui inestimabile collezione archeologica fu saccheggiata durante l'invasione del 2003.
- l'arco delle Mani della Vittoria, costruito durante il regime di Saddam Hussein.
- lo zoo di Baghdad.
- la Biblioteca Nazionale, di cui molti antichi manoscritti andarono bruciati nell'incendio dell'edificio durante l'invasione del 2003.
- la moschea di Kazimayn (dei due [Imam] Kāzim), dalla caratteristica cupola dorata, a nord-ovest di Baghdad, uno dei più importanti luoghi di culto sciiti, completata nel 1515.
- il Palazzo Abbaside (al-Qaṣr al-ʿAbbāsī), uno dei più antichi edifici cittadini, risalente al XII secolo.
- la Mustansiriyya, risalente al 1234, centro d'istruzione superiore fondato dal califfo al-Mustansir (1226-1242) e tuttora usato come centro d'insegnamento islamico.

Steve Reeves nasce a Glasgow, nel Montana, il 21 gennaio 1926. Suo padre Lester, coltivatore, muore in un incidente prima che il figlio compia due anni. Essendo morto il padre, all' età di 10 anni Steve si trasferisce insieme alla madre ad Oakland, dove trova una prima occupazione nella consegna dei giornali a bordo della sua bicicletta, con la quale si allena affrontando le ripide salite locali.
Nella lotta, Steve era superiore a tutti i suoi coetanei, tuttavia un giorno perse contro un ragazzo più piccolo di lui: stupito, decise di seguirlo e scoprì che questi si allenava con i pesi nel proprio cortile. Intraprese anch' egli questo sport, allenandosi d'altra parte sporadicamente. Il caso volle che ad Oackland vivesse Ed Yarick, che allestì un' eccellente palestra di bodybuilding. Steve si pose sotto la sua ala ed ottenne eccezionali risultati.
Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, Steve è arruolato nell' esercito statunitense e parte per le Filippine. tornato a casa nel 1946, riprende ad allenarsi con Yarick ed intensifica i suoi allenamenti, vincendo importanti competizioni sia nel 1946 che nel 1947.
Nel 1947 vinse il titolo di Mr. America. Questa vittoria fu per lui da trampolino di lancio nel mondo del cinema.

L'occasione d'oro arriva nel 1958 quando il regista Pietro Francisci gli affida la parte di Ercole nel film Le fatiche di Ercole. Reeves diventa il divo assoluto del peplum italiano, con film come Ercole e la regina di Lidia, Romolo e Remo, Gli ultimi giorni di Pompei o La guerra di Troia, dove spesso dimostra inaspettate qualità attoriali. All'apice della sua carriera, è stato rinomato come l'attore più pagato di tutta l'Europa [1].
Reeves gira il suo ultimo film nel 1968, prima di tornare negli Stati Uniti.

Durante la vecchiaia, Reeves ha lottato contro il doping, diffusissimo nel campo del body building, ed ha sostenuto l'allevamento dei cavalli. Ha passato i suoi ultimi venti anni a Valley Center, in California, vicino ad Escondido. Si è comprato un ranch con i suoi risparmi ed ha vissuto lì insieme alla sua seconda moglie Aline, finché lei non è deceduta nel 1989. Il primo maggio del 2000 Steve Reeves si è spento a causa di complicazioni dovute ad un linfoma.

Ancora giovanissima, legò il suo nome ad una celebre campagna pubblicitaria su Carosello reclamizzante un noto dentifricio del quale era testimonial[1]. Come attrice caratterista è spesso apparsa in produzioni cinematografiche del genere B-movie, prettamente di produzione italiana.

Il suo film più importante - che le ha dato una certa notorietà internazionale - è stato Un americano tranquillo, diretto da Joseph L. Mankiewicz e girato nel 1958 a Saigon (Vietnam) accanto all'attore-eroe statunitense Audie Murphy (un'immagine d'epoca ritrae l'attrice su una curiosa carrozzella accanto a Murphy durante una pausa della lavorazione).
Ne Il disprezzo di Jean-Luc Godard, film del 1963, ricopre il ruolo della segretaria del produttore Jack Palance che intrattiene rapporti di lavoro con il protagonista Michel Piccoli.
Negli anni '60 la Moll si è anche dedicata all'attività di cantante, incidendo alcuni 45 giri: il più noto di essi è Ballata per un amore perduto (Ballade a Sylvie)/Nato in settembre del 1963, in quanto l'autore dei testi di entrambi i brani è Piero Ciampi (mentre l'arrangiatore nonché autore della musica di Nato in settembre è il maestro Elvio Monti).
Dopo aver lasciato il mondo del cinema, la Moll ha iniziato a dedicarsi alla fotografia, come comunicato in una recente intervista nella trasmissione radiofonica RAI Hollywood Party.
