Wife bought a Model S40 in 2013 new from Tesla (actually a software-limited S60)... it's been mostly reliable over the past 11 years -- 2 12v battery swaps, some recalls, etc. 96k miles on it and has been garage kept it's entire life.
Last week she was driving to work and after making a turn, the car stopped running and had a whole list of errors pop up. She had it towed to Tesla who said that it was the 12v battery again, upon replacing the battery they said the big battery pack wouldn't run through self tests and it would need to be replaced. Value of the car according to KBB is $9000, the battery replacement would cost approx 14.5k just for the battery, not including the labor to replace it.
She's trading it in (getting $2600 on trade) for a standard gas Civic, she said she'll never own another electric car.
This past week I was at the NADA show (as an exhibitor) while all this was going on at home. I spoke to a few people there who feel the same way, the fact that EVs basically have a HUGE end of battery-life replacement cost will ultimately kill the market when people realize that it's not just as "cost effective" as replacing a timing belt or transmission, basically the cost of the new battery pack is equal to the cost of an entire vehicle (granted likely not the same overall value, but one could argue that the fit and finish on some of the Teslas is on par with the Civic she purchased.
