Hi everyone, I currently have a BMW i X and Tesla model S on order. I initially was fully committed to going with the BMW IX, because I had a less than stellar experience with my previous Tesla model Y. However, the closer I got to delivery date, the more sales tactic/markups etc. I’ve been dealing with with my dealership. This, along with the price drops, enticed me to go test drive a new model S, and I instantly fell in love with it. The quality of the car far exceeded my expectations compared to what I had grown accustomed to with the model Y, and I was pleasantly surprised with the level of storage the car offered for a sedan. Additionally, as someone who does a lot of road trips, I know the Tesla charging network takes a lot of the stress away.

Right now I am talking with my dealer to cancel my IX order and go ahead and pick up my model S sometime next week. Since this is a big decision, I just wanted to see what everyone here has as far as thoughts on these two cars, or any experiences that you’ve had: just in case I am overlooking something that I should be considering.

My use case is primarily just my wife and I taking our 2 bicycles various places, going on extended road trips (5 to 10 hours at a time), and the occasional hour or two long day trip with our 2-3 nieces and nephews.

I did not believe I would like the model S as much as I do, and my impression was that the interior build quality between the two cars is very similar. But, the last thing I want to do is get too emotional about either vehicle, and have the sort of buyers remorse I did with my model Y purchase (which just wasn’t a good fit as a vehicle for me). Thanks!

EDIT: Thank you everyone for your input, I’ve sent the email to cancel the iX deposit, and I’m going to take delivery of the Model S next week 👌

Hi Everyone! I've really enjoyed reading posts on this subreddit. As owners (or enthusiasts), I wanted to get your input on my EV decision and also let me know if I'm missing anything.

Background:Currently drive a 2020 X5 40i, but after 3 years can't seem to find a comfortable seating position (lumbar is way too aggressive even turned all the way down and seats are a bit too firm). I'm 41, married with 2 kids in car seats (ages 3.5 years and 10 months old). Previous cars included Mercedes, Audi, and Porsche. Love performance and luxury, but not stodginess. I've been into tech my entire life (first computer at 5) and it's a passion to this day (custom-built a new smart home in 2019). We also have 100% offset with a 19.2kW solar system. I drive about 5 to 10 miles per day, unless visiting clients further away which could be as far as 300 miles.

Advice Needed:Because of the seating discomfort, I'm looking to buy a new SUV (need the space for the 2 car seats) and like the extra cargo space. Here is what I'm considering and pros and cons as I see it:

  • Tesla Model X

    • Pros: Performance, Range, 3rd Row, Cargo Capacity, Supercharger Network, Software Updates, Full Self Driving Features (I understand it's in beta, but lots of it appeals to me)

    • Cons: Falcon Wing Doors, Lack Ceiling Glass in Back, Reliability (FWD, Suspension Shudder, etc.), Service Experience, Build Quality

    • Unsure (Need to Test Drive): Seats (I'm in NJ and the Princeton location doesn't have an X or S to sit in), Ride Quality (test drove Raven and it was a bit floaty for my taste)

  • Tesla Model Y Performance

    • Pros: Performance, Comfortable Seats, Supercharger Network, Software Updates, Full Self Driving Features (I understand it's in beta, but lots of it appeals to me)

    • Cons: Less Premium Interior, Very Common, Service Experience, Build Quality

    • Unsure (Need to Test Drive): Ride Quality (test drove a Performance 3 in 2020), Maybe More Nimble than X

  • BMW iX 50i or M60

    • Pros: Performance, Range, Looks More Premium (from Videos / Photos), Less Common, Service Experience, Build Quality

    • Cons: No Supercharger Network, Infrequent BMW Software (no functional improvement), No Frunk

    • Unsure (Need to Test Drive): Seats, Ride Quality

  • Mercedes EQS 580 SUV

    • Pros: Available, Large, Premium Feel, Less Common, Service Experience, Build Quality

    • Cons: No Supercharger Network, Infrequent Mercedes Software (no functional improvement), No Frunk, Feels Too Stodgy, Bland Looks

    • Unsure (Need to Test Drive): Ride Quality (suspect it will be way too soft)

Did I miss anything? Any of the above attributes that should be weighted more than others? I would love a Model S (best looking of all the EVs in my personal opinion) but with the kids (I do drop-offs and pickups), Costco/Home Depot hauls, and NJ snow, I think it's out of the question.
