A walking tour around the city of Edmonton, capital city of the Province of Alberta, Canada.
The film chronologically progresses from morning to night, showing daily life around Edmonton.
For those planning on visiting, those who’d like to visit but cannot or those who might be nostalgic and want to re-live their past visits / life there, hopefully this film shall satisfy, time and time again.
The city is Alberta's second-largest city and Canada's fifth-largest municipality. This metropolitan population as of 2015 is over 1.3 million people. Edmonton is the most northern North American city with a metropolitan population over one million.
Typically, summer lasts from late June until early September, and the humidity is seldom uncomfortably high. Winter lasts from November to March, and varies greatly in length and severity. Spring and autumn are both short and highly variable.
Edmonton is a cultural, governmental and educational centre. It hosts a year-round slate of festivals, reflected in the nickname "The Festival City."
Edmonton is the major economic centre for northern and central Alberta and a major centre for the oil and gas industry.
Edmonton's river valley constitutes the longest stretch of connected urban parkland in North America, and Edmonton has the highest amount of parkland per capita of any Canadian city; the river valley is 22 times larger than New York City's Central Park.
It is home to North America's largest mall, West Edmonton Mall (the world's largest mall from 1981 until 2004) and Fort Edmonton Park, Canada's largest living history museum. Edmonton is one of Canada's fastest growing cities.

I decided to visit my friends from Holland who were exploring the Canadian Rockies with their RV, before chasing them down in Banff I treated myself on the most famous hot dog in Canada at Tubby Dog and tried to break the glass floor at the Calgary Tower.

It was such a memorable experience meeting my Dutch friends on the other side of the world so we decided to do it up proper with a family BBQ and a few local brewski's, namely the Powder Hound by The Grizzly Paw which is a local brewery in Canmore, Alberta.
On our first adventure we left in the early morning to take the Banff Gondola to Sulphur Mountain, one of the most mesmerizing views of Banff. Make sure to fill up prior on a classic Canadian breakfast at Tim Hortons, the Canadian way.
The next adventure was a private helicopter ride at Rockies Heli Canada who took us from Kananaskis through the Rocky Mountains. It was a gorgeous clear day which resulted in excellent video footage. We even saw the same river where they shot the movie: The Revenant.
What also amazed us were the buck loads of wildlife passing by the RV throughout our stay at Banff's tunnel mountain campgrounds.
In next week's article I will give you all the details on our adventure at Lake Louise were I completed an 11 hour, 20 kilometer hike, thus best is to relax and relieve your sore muscles at Banff Upper Hot Springs after that trip.
In conclusion we were very fortunate that we had excellent weather with blue skies the entire trip. I highly recommend visiting Calgary, Banff & Lake Louise in the first week of June for the best experience.

Alberta
Alberta (/ælˈbɜːrtə/) is a western province of Canada. With an estimated population of 4,196,457 as of July 1, 2015, it is Canada's fourth-most populous province and the most populous of Canada's three prairie provinces. Alberta and its neighbour Saskatchewan were districts of the Northwest Territories until they were established as provinces on September 1, 1905. The premier has been Rachel Notley since May 2015.
Alberta is bounded by the provinces of British Columbia to the west and Saskatchewan to the east, the Northwest Territories to the north, and the US state of Montana to the south. Alberta is one of three Canadian provinces and territories to border only a single US state and one of only two landlocked provinces. It has a predominantly Humid continental climate, but seasonal temperature average swings are smaller than to areas further east, with winters being warmed by occasional chinook winds bringing sudden warming which moderates average temperatures.
Alberta's capital Edmonton is near the geographic centre of the province and is the primary supply and service hub for Canada's crude oil, oil sands (Athabasca oil sands) and other northern resource industries.

Eric Clapton
Eric Patrick Clapton, CBE (born 30 March 1945), is an English rock and blues guitarist, singer and songwriter. He is the only three-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: once as a solo artist and separately as a member of the Yardbirds and Cream. Clapton has been referred to as one of the most important and influential guitarists of all time. Clapton ranked second in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and fourth in Gibson's "Top 50 Guitarists of All Time". He was also named number five in Time magazine's list of "The 10 Best Electric Guitar Players" in 2009.
In the mid-1960s, Clapton left the Yardbirds to play blues with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Immediately after leaving Mayall, Clapton formed the power trio Cream with drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce, in which Clapton played sustained blues improvisations and "arty, blues-based psychedelic pop". Furthermore, he formed blues rock band Blind Faith with Baker, Steve Winwood, and Ric Grech. For most of the 1970s, Clapton's output bore the influence of the mellow style of JJ Cale and the reggae of Bob Marley. His version of Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" helped reggae reach a mass market. Two of his most popular recordings were "Layla", recorded with Derek and the Dominos; and Robert Johnson's "Crossroads", recorded with Cream. Following the death of his son Conor in 1991, Clapton's grief was expressed in the song "Tears in Heaven", which featured in his Unplugged album.

Northern Alberta
Northern Alberta is a region located in the Canadian province of Alberta.
Its primary industry is oil and gas, with large heavy oil reserves being exploited at the Athabasca oil sands and Wabasca area in the east of the region. Mostly natural gas is extracted in Peace region and Chinchaga-Rainbow areas in the west, and forestry and logging are also developed in the boreal forests of this region.
Northern Alberta encompasses census divisions 16, 17, 18, and 19.
Geography
The region consists of aspen parkland in the south, grading to boreal forest and muskeg in the north.
The southwest of the region is part of the Peace Country, an area that stretches into northeastern British Columbia consisting of fertile prairie, ranchland, and farmland along the Peace River and its tributaries.
Northern Alberta is crossed by the Peace River and the lower course of the Athabasca River. Other major rivers are Wapiti, Smoky, Hay, Chinchaga, Petitot Rivers in the west, Wabasca River in the center and Firebag and Clearwater River in the east. Alberta's two largest waterbodies, Lake Athabasca and Lake Claire are located in the wetlands of northeastern Alberta, forming the Peace-Athabasca Delta, that drains through the Slave River towards the Arctic Ocean.

Alberta Culture and Tourism
Alberta Culture and Tourism, is a ministry of the Executive Council of Alberta. It was created on 15 September 2014 and is responsible for “Alberta’s cultural industries, tourism, the arts, heritage and nonprofit/voluntary sector” as well as sport and recreation.
Administrative history
The culture, tourism, and recreation functions of Alberta’s government, have on several occasions in past been overseen by separate ministers, and they have also been, more than once, sections within the portfolio of the same minister. They have also each been joined to still other government departments at various points.
A separate tourism ministry goes back at least to 1968 when Allen R. Patrick was named Minister of Industry and Tourism. From 1971 to 1975, tourism as an issue was assigned to a minister without a portfolio, and there was no separate tourism department. In 1979 Tourism and Small Business became a separate ministry, renamed simply “Tourism” in 1985. In the major restructuring of 1992, Tourism was reunited with Economic Development; Parks and Recreation was added as well. This situation was mostly static for the next two decades. The ministry, from 2006 to 2014 was known as Alberta Tourism, Parks, and Recreation (TPR).

Edmonton's river valley constitutes the longest stretch of connected urban parkland in North America, and Edmonton has the highest amount of parkland per capita of any Canadian city; the river valley is 22 times larger than New York City's Central Park.
It is home to North America's largest mall, West Edmonton Mall (the world's largest mall from 1981 until 2004) and Fort Edmonton Park, Canada's largest living history museum. Edmonton is one of Canada's fastest growing cities.

I decided to visit my friends from Holland who were exploring the Canadian Rockies with their RV, before chasing them down in Banff I treated myself on the most famous hot dog in Canada at Tubby Dog and tried to break the glass floor at the Calgary Tower.

It was such a memorable experience meeting my Dutch friends on the other side of the world so we decided to do it up proper with a family BBQ and a few local brewski's, namely the Powder Hound by The Grizzly Paw which is a local brewery in Canmore, Alberta.
On our first adventure we left in the early morning to take the Banff Gondola to Sulphur Mountain, one of the most mesmerizing views of Banff. Make sure to fill up prior on a classic Canadian breakfast at Tim Hortons, the Canadian way.
The next adventure was a private helicopter ride at Rockies Heli Canada who took us from Kananaskis through the Rocky Mountains. It was a gorgeous clear day which resulted in excellent video footage. We even saw the same river where they shot the movie: The Revenant.
What also amazed us were the buck loads of wildlife passing by the RV throughout our stay at Banff's tunnel mountain campgrounds.
In next week's article I will give you all the details on our adventure at Lake Louise were I completed an 11 hour, 20 kilometer hike, thus best is to relax and relieve your sore muscles at Banff Upper Hot Springs after that trip.
In conclusion we were very fortunate that we had excellent weather with blue skies the entire trip. I highly recommend visiting Calgary, Banff & Lake Louise in the first week of June for the best experience.

Bernie Schiesser Bernie grew up on a small farm about 13 km north of the town of Golden. It was here where he spent a lot of time in the forest and mountains learning about nature. The farm sold some dairy products, eggs and produce such as many small farms in rural BC in the 40's and 50’s. The income was supplemented by selling forest products. He became a professional mountain guide in 1967 and spent most summers after that until 1984 living in the alpine regions guiding and teaching outdoor skills. This video’s title was supposed to be “Bow River Nymphing”. However, as we floated the Bow River with David Blair (owner of Fish Tales Fly Shop in Calgary, Alberta) & Terry Johnson (Head Guide at the shop) “38 Minutes” came as a result of Terry being incredibly economical with his instruction and demonstration. From the time we cracked the camera and drone cases to shoot Terry showing & discussing his Bow River nymphing set-up, through to demonstrating how and where to fish the nymphing rig (all completed with on-stream discussion/demonstration while landing three nice rainbow trout) the total time was 38 minutes. The Hunt
The Hunt, Maasai Mara, Kenya, November 5, 2011. We left our lodge early this morning to catch some of the activity that occurs from just before sunset to just after sunrise. We were lucky to see a lioness on the hunt. What was amazing to me was how she completely ignored the safari vehicles that were around her. We had seen this before with a leopard on the Serengeti. We were just part of the landscape. However, our guides told us that attitude would quickly change if anyone chose to leave their vehicles. Hence the prohibition on people leaving their vehicles while in the park. I recorded this hunt for nearly half an hour, and boiled it down to the four-and-a-half minutes you see here. These are my carefully selected top 10 travel tips for Calgary & Alberta and includes the best places, travel tips and things to do in Banff & Calgary ranging from the most famous hot dog, a helicopter ride with Rockies Heli Tours to the most beautiful place in Canada called Lake Louise. -- Can we make it to 1,000 LIKES? -- Photos, guide, maps & details on my blog:

I decided to visit my friends from Holland who were exploring the Canadian Rockies with their RV, before chasing them down in Banff I treated myself on the most famous hot dog in Canada at Tubby Dog and tried to break the glass floor at the Calgary Tower.

It was such a memorable experience meeting my Dutch friends on the other side of the world so we decided to do it up proper with a family BBQ and a few local brewski's, namely the Powder Hound by The Grizzly Paw which is a local brewery in Canmore, Alberta.
On our first adventure we left in the early morning to take the Banff Gondola to Sulphur Mountain, one of the most mesmerizing views of Banff. Make sure to fill up prior on a classic Canadian breakfast at Tim Hortons, the Canadian way.
The next adventure was a private helicopter ride at Rockies Heli Canada who took us from Kananaskis through the Rocky Mountains. It was a gorgeous clear day which resulted in excellent video footage. We even saw the same river where they shot the movie: The Revenant.
What also amazed us were the buck loads of wildlife passing by the RV throughout our stay at Banff's tunnel mountain campgrounds.
In next week's article I will give you all the details on our adventure at Lake Louise were I completed an 11 hour, 20 kilometer hike, thus best is to relax and relieve your sore muscles at Banff Upper Hot Springs after that trip.
In conclusion we were very fortunate that we had excellent weather with blue skies the entire trip. I highly recommend visiting Calgary, Banff & Lake Louise in the first week of June for the best experience.

In this travel video tour of Portland, Oregon, I travel to Portland, one of the most unique cities in the United States.
I started my trip off by hopping off a plane and then immediately hopping onto a bus. But not just any bus, a bus operated by Brewvana Brewery Tours, the mostly women-run craft beer brewery tour company. Portland, or know as Beervana to some, is home to 55 breweries within its borders, and is truly a beer-lover's paradise. On my tour we made stops at Rogue Ales & Spirits, Laurelwood Pubic House & Brewery, Widmer Brothers Brewery and Sidecar Bar, where I had the chance to sit down over a pint with the founder and owner of Brewvana, Ashley Rose Salvitti.
While in Portland, I stayed at the Tiny House Hotel, a hotel made up of, you guessed it, tiny houses. In the next portion of my video guide I give a tour of my "crib" to show what it's like to live and stay in a tiny house.
Then, in an effort to get a chance to experience the famed brunch scene in Portland, I stopped in at The Tin Shed Garden Cafe, located down the street from where I was staying in the New Alberta Arts District.
In the interest of learning more about food, I headed to the downtown location of the Portland Farmers Market, located in a beautiful stretch of downtown Portland. Here, I got a tour of the grounds with Mona Johnson, then had the opportunity to meet up with some of the vendors, including Matt Choi of Choi's Kimchi Company, and famed chef and artisanal pickle impresario, David Barber of Picklopolis and Bingo! Sandwiches.
In need of a little peace and serenity, I then visited the Lan Su Chinese Garden, a peaceful and beautiful oasis in an otherwise busy and hectic part of downtown.
When visiting Portland, there's no reason to spend all your time in the city, especially with so much to do outside the city limits. The next day I took a road trip with local Matthew Domingo to explore the Columbia River Gorge and the numerous trails and waterfalls just off the road you can check out.
Then, to wrap things up, we stopped in at Hood River Organic near the riverside town of Hood River, an organic orchard and farm run by East Coast ex-pat Dan Thall, who gave us a tour of his land. Once the day ended we then headed out to happy hour at Solera Brewery in the imposing shadow of Mount Hood and then into town for a dinner featuring mushroom pizza with mushrooms Dan had grown and recently delivered to the restaurant.

Riding on horseback for 5 memorable days, we travelled through the majestic back country in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. My wife and I joined Banff Trail Riders (www.horseback.com) and filmed the journey from the sky. We rode through the Sundance valley and stopped nightly at rustic cabins along the way... The highlight of the journey was an ascent up to Allenby Pass at nearly 8100 feet. I never thought I'd be riding a horse up the side of a mountain and the memory will last a lifetime.

Bernie Schiesser
Bernie grew up on a small farm about 13 km north of the town of Golden. It was here where he spent a lot of time in the forest and mountains learning about nature. The farm sold some dairy products, eggs and produce such as many small farms in rural BC in the 40's and 50’s. The income was supplemented by selling forest products.
He became a professional mountain guide in 1967 and spent most summers after that until 1984 living in the alpine regions guiding and teaching outdoor skills. During this period he was responsible for more than a thousand teenagers and adults in programs which taught mountaineering and mountain travel/living in the National Parks of B.C. and in Alberta.
Bernie also served as the President of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) for 7 years. He also worked as an examiner on the mountain guide qualification courses. The ACMG is dedicated to protecting the public interest in mountain travel and is the only internationally recognized professional association of trained and certified mountain guides and instructors in Canada. As a group, the ACMG presents a strong voice for high standards of alpine risk management and the professionalism of mountain guiding in Canada. ACMG members, like Bernie, are highly talented, dedicated professionals who are committed to providing safe and exciting mountain adventures. During this period the ACMG made application and was admitted into the UIAGM (International Association of Mountain Guides)
He enjoyed guiding many well known people such as the Canadian Actor Lorne Green. In 1980, when President of the ACMG, he guided Premier Peter Lougheed and his party up Mt. Lougheed, with Bruno Engler and Kiwi Gallagher, as part of an Alberta 75 year celebration.
Throughout his life he has been involved with the mountains, wildlife and the teaching of outdoor skills to others. He has always observed and learned about our environment and expressed this value to all who he has been associated with. He does not have a degree in wildlife biology but his observations and practical experience exceeds that of many professionals.
He also has 2 years as avalanche control director in California at the Sugar Bowl ski area in 1963? 65. He worked as a rescue specialist with the warden service in Yoho Park in 1966 and attended several wardens training sessions in rescue from Walter Perrin a Swiss guide hired by Banff Park as their rescue director. From 1983 to 1996 he instructed on several courses for the Alpine Club of Canada each season on: mountain travel, survival, avalanche safety, mountain leadership and crevasse rescue.
In the late 1970.s Bernie Schiesser and Eric Lomas constructed several huts for the Alpine club of Canada, in the National Parks: the Neil Colgan hut at almost 10,000ft, the Peyto Hut beside the Peyto Glacier, the Freshfield Hut on the Niverville meadow near the Freshfield glacier, the Scott Duncan hut and the Lloyd MacKay Mt. Alberta hut.Upon hearing that Parks Canada wanted the Freshfield Hut removed from Banff National Park, and it was going to be burned down and knowing theenvironmental mess after burning a hut with steel cladding and heavy fiberglass insulating, Bernie approached Parks Canada and offered to remove it at no cost for parks and to clean up the area. Parks
agreed.
The disassembled hut was removed to an appropriate site out of the Park near the Campbell Icefield.Eventually Bernie received a license of occupation from the B.C. Government and used the old Freshfield hut for
three seasons until 2002 when, with Eric Lomas and his sons, Chris and Andre, they built a more substantial and modern lodge, now known as the Campbell Icefield Chalet.
Bernie’s greatest passion is hosting skiers at the new Campbell Icefield Chalet. He knows the area like the back of his hand. He takes great pleasure in working with other ACMG guides to ensure a safe ski touring
week for his clients. Since the new Chalet was constructed there have been more than 12,000 skier days.
Volunteer Work:
Bernie is a current member of the Civil Air search and Rescue Association in Golden. He was a Deputy commander CASARA Banff. He trains spotters and flies search training and has participated in several searches in BC and Alberta
Association Work:
Member of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides and President from 1974 to 1980. During this time he was an instructor/examiner on their courses and is currently an honorary member. This august list is comprised of members of the mountain community that have distinguished themselves through their contributions to the guiding profession as well as general mountain safety and knowledge.

The Hundred Year Road follows Ray Fowler and Pat McKenna on their journey as they recreate the trip from Calgary to Edmonton using Alberta’s first published road guide from 1914 as their reference. They travel in 100 year old vehicles, camping out and using only technology from the time period as they deal with rough roads, bad weather and the trials and tribulations of driving in their living museum pieces
Calgary to Edmonton; In 2014 it’s a totally routine trip that thousands of people make every day. They climb into comfortable, reliable cars and take off at 110 kilometres an hour with the stereo blasting and about 3 hours later they reach their destination. But just for a moment, try to imagine that same journey one hundred years ago. Cars, or the horseless carriage as they were called had only been around for about 20 years. They were far from reliable and there were certainly no highways for them to travel on. The trek from Calgary to Edmonton in 1914 was fraught with peril: from roads to weather to mechanical failures to livestock, and it generally took days, not hours to complete.

The Hundred Year Road follows Ray Fowler and Pat McKenna on their journey as they recreate the trip from Calgary to Edmonton using Alberta’s first published road guide from 1914 as their reference. They travel in 100 year old vehicles, camping out and using only technology from the time period as they deal with rough roads, bad weather and the trials and tribulations of driving in their living museum pieces
Calgary to Edmonton; In 2014 it’s a totally routine trip that thousands of people make every day. They climb into comfortable, reliable cars and take off at 110 kilometres an hour with the stereo blasting and about 3 hours later they reach their destination. But just for a moment, try to imagine that same journey one hundred years ago. Cars, or the horseless carriage as they were called had only been around for about 20 years. They were far from reliable and there were certainly no highways for them to travel on. The trek from Calgary to Edmonton in 1914 was fraught with peril: from roads to weather to mechanical failures to livestock, and it generally took days, not hours to complete.

However, as we floated the Bow River with David Blair (owner of Fish Tales Fly Shop in Calgary, Alberta) & Terry Johnson (Head Guide at the shop) “38 Minutes” came as a result of Terry being incredibly economical with his instruction and demonstration. From the time we cracked the camera and drone cases to shoot Terry showing & discussing his Bow River nymphing set-up, through to demonstrating how and where to fish the nymphing rig (all completed with on-stream discussion/demonstration while landing three nice rainbow trout) the total time was 38 minutes. When you travel to fly fish, you always hope to meet a guide such as Terry – someone who is clear and concise with tactics that work. This is a great video to help you understand the basic Bow River nymph set-up. It’s a set-up you can use on most waters. It’s effective and hopefully this video encourages you to simply have a go. The Hunt, Maasai Mara, Kenya, November 5, 2011.
We left our lodge early this morning to catch some of the activity that occurs from just before sunset to just after sunrise. We were lucky to see a lioness on the hunt.
What was amazing to me was how she completely ignored the safari vehicles that were around her. We had seen this before with a leopard on the Serengeti. We were just part of the landscape. However, our guides told us that attitude would quickly change if anyone chose to leave their vehicles. Hence the prohibition on people leaving their vehicles while in the park.
I recorded this hunt for nearly half an hour, and boiled it down to the four-and-a-half minutes you see here. As all good hunters, this lion was extremely patient, and as you can see, very intense and all business. She waited many long minutes for the right opportunity. I just kept my camera on record and was thankful for a fresh, deep-charged battery.
The rising heat (30 degrees C +) was a factor, along the way. You can see near the end that she is stressed by it. Hunting success varies with the conditions and skill of the hunter, but most attempts are unsuccessful, averaging around 10% success on average for most predators.
