A man considered Nevada's most-dangerous criminal is preparing another appeal to his death sentence. Patrick McKenna has been on death row for more than 20 years, and he has agreed to speak only with the Channel 8 I-Team.
The name may not be familiar to newer residents, but McKenna has long been considered Nevada's Public Enemy No. 1, a convicted killer, rapist and escape artist who's even been compared to Hannibal Lecter.
"I'm a guy who has spent 38 years of his life in prison, maximum security prisons," McKenna said. "In my early years, I was involved in prison gangs, sometimes as a matter of survival, sometimes as a matter of pure criminality."
McKenna doesn't pretend to be a misunderstood Goody Two-Shoes. He admits to being a career criminal, a teenage hoodlum who became a gangster, who led an inmate takeover of the city jail, and who escaped from Nevada's maximum security prison -- not once, but twice. Look at his record, and you might think he's easy to categorize as someone who deserves the death sentence. But there's a lot going on behind those brooding eyes.
Whether he deserves the reputation as Nevada's most dangerous prisoner, McKenna's troubled life raises disturbing questions about crime and punishment in our state.

Linwood and J.B. Briley were the ringleaders in the six inmate escape from Virginia's death row atMecklenburg Correctional Center on May 31, 1984. Splitting off from their two remaining co-escapers atPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania, the Brileys went to live near their uncle in the north of the city. They were captured on June 19 by a heavily armed group of FBIagents and police, who had determined their location by placing wiretaps on their uncle's phone line.[citation needed] Following their return to Richmond, Virginia, few sought to plead for the Brileys lives to be spared.

Death row
Death row, in English-speaking countries that have capital punishment, is the place, often a section of a prison, that houses prisoners awaiting execution. The term is also used figuratively to describe the state of awaiting execution ("being on death row"), even in places where no special facility or separate unit for condemned inmates exists. After persons are found guilty of an offence and sentenced to death, they remain on death row during appeal and habeas corpus procedures.
Opponents of capital punishment claim that a prisoner's isolation and uncertainty over his or her fate constitute a form of mental cruelty and that especially long-time death row inmates are liable to become mentally ill, if they are not already. This is referred to as the death row phenomenon. In extreme cases some inmates may attempt to commit suicide.
In the United States, prisoners may wait years before execution can be carried out due to the complex and time-consuming appeals procedures mandated in the jurisdiction. The time between sentencing and execution has increased relatively steadily between 1977 and 2010, including a 22% jump between 1989 and 1990 and a similar jump between 2008 and 2009. In 2010, a death row inmate waited an average of 178 months (roughly 15 years) between sentencing and execution. Nearly a quarter of deaths on death row in the U.S. are due to natural causes.

Patrick McKenna
Patrick McKenna (born May 8, 1960, in Hamilton, Ontario) is a Canadian comedian and actor. He is best known for playing Harold Green on the television series The Red Green Show.
Early life
Patrick McKenna became interested in Second City when a high-school teacher took him to a show at Second City Toronto. After he graduated from high school, he attended Sheridan College, graduating with a business degree in 1982. To help with tuition, he worked his way to being night manager at Second City, learning how improv worked. In 1983 he auditioned successfully for the main stage. During the 1980s he tried his hand at standup and spent 5 years performing his act in Canada and the US.
One night at Second City during the late 1980s, McKenna received the acting-job offer which would change his life. Steve Smith was recruiting cast members, especially a sidekick, for his new project, The Red Green Show. He had come to Second City and was scoping out the entire troupe, but when Patrick did his twitchy-nerd character, Smith knew he had his sidekick. He approached McKenna after the show, and he accepted the part. This twitchy nerd character would be seen on television screens throughout Canada and the US for the next 15 years as the lovable nephew Harold Green on The Red Green Show.

"I'm a guy who has spent 38 years of his life in prison, maximum security prisons," McKenna said. "In my early years, I was involved in prison gangs, sometimes as a matter of survival, sometimes as a matter of pure criminality."
McKenna doesn't pretend to be a misunderstood Goody Two-Shoes. He admits to being a career criminal, a teenage hoodlum who became a gangster, who led an inmate takeover of the city jail, and who escaped from Nevada's maximum security prison -- not once, but twice. Look at his record, and you might think he's easy to categorize as someone who deserves the death sentence. But there's a lot going on behind those brooding eyes.

Legendary private investigator Pat McKenna joins me today to discuss his work on the OJ Simpson trial. We begin by discussing Pat's initial work on the case which took him to Chicago. Pat talks about his three weeks there interviewing numerous witnesses who saw OJ. Pat explains how like most people he assumed that the media was right and OJ was guilty. Yet as his investigation unfolded, interviewing people such as the staff at the hotel near the O'Hare airport, to people on the plane, Pat began to come to the realization that OJ was not the murder. Pat points out some of the key pieces of evidence he discovered there which point towards someone other than OJ being the killer. We discuss how OJ signed numerous autographs yet no one remembers him as having cut up and bloody hands. Pat also talks about the fact that OJ only left his hotel room after he was told of his ex-wifes murder, which casts doubt on the theory that he left to bury evidence. Pat also talks about Chicago PD's assertion that the LAPD began screwing up evidence the moment they received it from Chicago. Next we move onto Mark Fuhrman, his racist past and the numerous problems with his timeline of events on the night in question. Pat explains his own investigation into Fuhrman's background and lays out how Fuhrman planted the gloves. Pat also breaks down the impossibility of the prosecutions timeline of events that night.
In the second hour we take a look at one one the most overlooked but important witnesses in the case, Tom Lange, the last person to have seen Nicole Simpson alive. We explore both the original police report and Lange's own personal notes on what he saw the night of June 12, 1994. Pat explains how Lange saw Nicole talking with two men a few minutes after 10pm who were driving a White Ford 350 truck. Pat talks about the credibility of Lange and why his story should be trusted, as well as why the LAPD and prosecution never followed up with him. We also point out some of the discrepancies between the police report and what Lange actually stated he saw that night. Later we talk a look at other eye and ear witnesses from that night and show how nearly all of them contradict the prosecutions own timeline.
