How can I apply for unemployment insurance?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not administer or oversee unemployment insurance (UI) programs. You should contact your State workforce agency for information, using the Department of Labor's Career Onestop Service Locator.

  • The State Employment and Unemployment data for February 2017 are scheduled to be released on March 24, 2017, at 10:00 A.M. Eastern Time.
  • The Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment data for January 2017 are scheduled to be released on March 17, 2017, at 10:00 A.M. Eastern Time.

January jobless rates down in 5 states; payroll jobs up in 13 states, down in 1

In January, unemployment rates were significantly lower in 5 states and stable in 45 states and the District of Columbia. Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 13 states, decreased in Alaska, and was essentially unchanged in 36 states and the District.

Dec jobless rates down over the year in 236 of 387 metro areas; payroll jobs up in 292

Jobless rates were lower in December than a year earlier in 236 of the 387 metropolitan areas, higher in 111, and unchanged in 40. Nonfarm payroll employment was up in 292 metropolitan areas over the year, down in 87, and unchanged in 8.
