Carter Benedict Burwell (born November 18, 1955) is an American composer of film scores. He is best known as a regular collaborator of the Coen brothers, having scored 17 of their films, among them Raising Arizona (1987), Barton Fink (1991), Fargo (1996), The Big Lebowski (1998), No Country for Old Men (2007), Burn After Reading (2008), and True Grit (2010). Other notable works include the Spike Jonze films Being John Malkovich (1999), Adaptation (2002) and Where the Wild Things Are (2009), David O. Russell's Three Kings (1999), the miniseries Olive Kitteridge (2014), Anomalisa (2015), and Todd Haynes' Velvet Goldmine (1998), Mildred Pierce miniseries, and Carol (2015).
Burwell was born in New York City, the son of Natalie (née Benedict), a math teacher, and Charles Burwell, who founded Thaibok Fabrics, Ltd. He graduated from King School in Stamford, Connecticut, and Harvard College, where he was a cartoonist for The Harvard Lampoon.
As a film composer, Burwell has had a long-working relationship with the Coen brothers, providing music for every film they have made (except for O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Inside Llewyn Davis, which had folk music soundtracks produced by T-Bone Burnett). He enjoys working with left-field directors, such as Spike Jonze. Among his best known film scores are Miller's Crossing (1990), And the Band Played On (1993), Conspiracy Theory (1997), Hamlet (2000), The Spanish Prisoner (1997), Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007), In Bruges (2008), Twilight (2008), Where The Wild Things Are (2009), The Blind Side (2009), and Breaking Dawn Part 1 (2011). Burwell wrote and recorded the original score for the film The Bourne Identity, but his version was replaced by director Doug Liman for one by John Powell.
Breaking Dawn is the fourth novel in the The Twilight Saga by American author Stephenie Meyer. Divided into three parts, the first and third sections are written from Bella Swan's perspective and the second is written from the perspective of Jacob Black. The novel directly follows the events of the previous novel, Eclipse, as Bella and Edward Cullen get married, leaving behind a heartbroken Jacob. When Bella faces unexpected and life-threatening situations, she willingly risks her human life and possible vampire immortality to undergo the ultimate transformation from a weak pawn to the strong queen with unique powers to fight the final battle to save all those she loves.
Meyer finished an outline of the book in 2003, but developed and changed it as she wrote New Moon and Eclipse, though the main and most significant storylines remained unchanged. Little, Brown and Company took certain measures to prevent the book's contents from leaking, such as closing forums and message boards on several fansites and providing a special e-mail address for fans to send in links to leaks and spoilers online.
Carter is a surname which originally meant a person who hauls goods in a cart. It comes from the Gaelic and Celtic word cairt (cart). Being of Gaelic and Celtic origins the name originated in Ireland and Scotland and later migrated to England where it was reduced to its English pronunciation and form. However, this name stems from a few common surnames, the names being McCarthy, McArthur and McCarter.
People with this surname may trace their ancestors back to Ireland, many of these name holders ancestors escaped Ireland during the Irish diaspora heading to Great Britain, the American colonies typically the colonies of New York, Massachusetts, Georgia and Virginia. Other immigrants entered the United States later during the Great Famine of Ireland in the 1840s and later. The Irish counties with the highest amount of families having this surname are Laois, Galway, Meath and Leitrim; Laois seems to be the place where most Carters settled or where the name began in origin. Within the past 150 to 200 years, the Carter surname has been adopted widely by the African American community, either with ethnic black and Irish mixing or taken from slavemasters by former slaves. This name is common among African Americans capable of tracing their roots back to the southern United States from the early 20th century onward.

The soundtrack includes two songs by Paramore, a new song by Mutemath, and an original song for the film by Perry Farrell. "Flightless Bird, American Mouth" by Iron & Wine was chosen for inclusion in the movie by star Kristen Stewart, who plays Bella Swan. The soundtrack won a 2009 American Music Award for Favorite Soundtrack.

From Stanley Kubrick's classic 2001: A Space Odyssey to the Coen Brothers' Miller's Crossing and True Grit, this program examines the creative process of scoring feature films and the neuro-scientific insights that reveal how such compositions...
With a career composing some of the most memorable music lines in modern film for The Coens, Bill Condon, Spike Jonze and Todd Haynes among many others, Carter Burwell has never gotten an Oscar nomination for a score. Part of that is that many of the filmmakers he works with mix in a lot of pre-recorded music. But this year, his scores are front and center in three films, Haynes' Carol, Charlie Kaufman's Anomalisa, and Condon't Mr. Holmes. He spoke to David Poland on the day of his first movie junket. Paramount Pictures asked me to interview film score composer Carter Burwell about his incredible score for the Coen Bros. movie True Grit. I worked with a great Director of Photography, Steve Yaconetti, and we met Carter at his Long Island home. Steve and I decided on the setting and backgrounds for the interview, I conducted the interview (Carter is responding to my questions) and some of the additional B-roll shots I suggested to Steve were used by Paramount's editing team. This is the featurette produced and copyrighted by Paramount Pictures in 2010.

http://www.ascap.com Carol is a film about intimacy, told intimately by director Todd Haynes. Its score, by ASCAP composer Carter Burwell, is an essential part of Carol’s elegant tapestry. Its cues are composed of small musical gestures, hinting at the passions under the surface. A week before the film's November 20, 2015 release, we asked Burwell about how he crafted the film's luminous score. To start off our interview, Burwell told us his favorite Christmas carol. And so the lion fell in love with the lamb.
What a stupid lamb.
What a sick masochistic lion.
About three things I was absolutely positive.
First, Edward was a vampire.
Second, there was a part of him -
and I didn't know how dominant that part might be -
that thirsted for my blood.
And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love
with him.
