Bruno Walter (September 15, 1876February 17, 1962) was a German-born conductor. One of the most famous conductors of the 20th century, he was born in Berlin, but moved to several countries between 1933 and 1939, finally settling in the United States in 1939. He was born Bruno Schlesinger, but began using Walter as his surname in 1896, and officially changed his surname to Walter upon becoming naturalised in Austria in 1911. Bruno Walter was for many years active as a composer, but his works have not entered the repertoire.

James Hanratty (4 October 1936, Bromley, Kent – 4 April 1962, Bedford Prison, Bedford) was the seventh-to-last person in Britain to be hanged for murder after being convicted of carrying out the 1961 "A6 murder" committed on the main path at Maulden Wood. The guilt of the later convicts was never in doubt, but Hanratty's guilt has been disputed. Hanratty, a professional car thief, was convicted of the murder of Michael Gregsten at Deadman's Hill on the A6, near the village of Clophill, Bedfordshire, England, on 23 August 1961. Gregsten's companion Valerie Storie had been raped and shot. She survived but was paralysed by her injuries. Charges on these additional crimes were kept in reserve.

The Berlin Wall (German: Berliner Mauer) was a physical barrier separating West Berlin from the German Democratic Republic (GDR) (East Germany), including East Berlin. The longer inner German border demarcated the border between East and West Germany. Both borders came to symbolize the Iron Curtain between Western and Eastern Europe and, ultimately, between USA and the Soviet Union. The wall separated East Germany from West Germany for more than a quarter-century, from the day construction began on August 13, 1961 until the Wall was opened on November 9, 1989. During this period, at least 136 people were confirmed killed trying to cross the Wall into West Berlin, according to official figures. However, a prominent victims' group claims that more than 200 people were killed trying to flee from East to West Berlin. Brazil won the game 3-1 to record their second consecutive World Cup victory. Santiago's Estadio Nacional served as the venue for the final itself, and after 15 minutes, Brazil again found themselves a goal behind in the World Cup final, as a long ball from Adolf Scherer was latched onto by Josef Masopust: 10 Czechoslovakia. However, just like the previous final four years earlier, Brazil soon hit back, equalising two minutes later through Amarildo after an error by the hitherto flawless Czechoslovak goalkeeper Schrojf. The Brazilians did not stop there and with goals from Zito and Vavá (another Schrojf error) mid-way through the second half, the Czechoslovaks just couldn't get back into the game. I found this gem in a box of 8mm films given to me for a transfer job to DVD. It's a series of "run what ya brung" drag races at Island Dragway, Great Meadows, NJ in 1962. The guy I'm doing the job for was driving the blue '62 Impala SS 409. Enjoy!

Lola Novaković performing "Ne Pali Svetla u Sumrak" ("Don't Turn the Lights on at Twilight"), the Yugoslav entry at the 1962 Eurovision Song Contest. Yugoslavia's second-ever entry and one of their relatively few Serbian-language ones, this song was possibly the year's best ballad aside from the French one and definitely that contest's jazziest tune (love that sax, btw!), a sweet, atmospheric lullaby wonderfully sung by Lola, one of her country's most popular singers during the 60s. The juries also loved it, since its joint 4th place was Yugoslavia's only top-5 placing until 1983!
