Hu Shih (, 17 December 1891 — 24 February 1962), born Hu Hung-hsing (), was a Chinese philosopher, essayist and diplomat. His courtesy name was Shih-chih (). Hu is widely recognized today as a key contributor to Chinese liberalism and language reform in his advocacy for the use of written vernacular Chinese. He was also an influential Redology scholar and held the famous Jiaxu manuscript () for many years until his death.

Biography

Hu was born in Shanghai to Hu Chuan () and Feng Shundi (). His ancestors were from Jixi, Anhui. In January 1904, his family established an arranged marriage for Hu with Chiang Tung-hsiu (), an illiterate girl with bound feet who was one year older than he was. The marriage took place in December 1917. Hu received his fundamental education in Jixi and Shanghai.

Hu became a "national scholar" through funds appropriated from the Boxer Rebellion Indemnity Scholarship Program. On 16 August 1910, he was sent to study agriculture at Cornell University in the United States. In 1912 he changed his major to philosophy and literature. After receiving his undergraduate degree, he went to Columbia University to study philosophy. At Columbia he was greatly influenced by his professor, John Dewey, and Hu became Dewey's translator and a lifelong advocate of pragmatic evolutionary change, helping Dewey in his 1919-1921 lectures series in China. He returned to lecture in Peking University. During his tenure there, he received support from Chen Duxiu, editor of the influential journal ''New Youth'', quickly gaining much attention and influence. Hu soon became one of the leading and influential intellectuals during the May Fourth Movement and later the New Culture Movement.

He quit ''New Youth'' in the 1920s and published several political newspapers and journals with his friends. His most important contribution was the promotion of vernacular Chinese in literature to replace Classical Chinese, which ideally made it easier for the ordinary person to read. The significance of this for Chinese culture was great—as John Fairbank put it, "the tyranny of the classics had been broken".

He was recalled in September 1942 and was replaced by Wei Tao-ming, who had previously represented the ROC in Vichy France. Hu then served as chancellor of Peking University between 1946 and 1948, and later (1957) president of the Academia Sinica in Taipei, where he remained until his death. He was also chief executive of the Free China Journal, which was eventually shut down for criticizing Chiang Kai-shek. He died of heart attack in Nankang, Taipei at the age of 70, and is buried in a tomb in Hu Shih Park, by the Academia Sinica campus.

Hu Shih's work fell into disrepute in mainland China until a 1986 article, written by Ji Xianlin, "A Few Words for Hu Shi", advocated acknowledging not only Hu Shih's mistakes, but also his contributions to modern Chinese literature. His article was sufficiently convincing to many scholars that it caused a re-evaluation of the development of modern Chinese literature and the role of Hu Shih.

Pragmatism

During the Warlord era in the Republic of China, unlike other fellow intellectuals such as Liang Qichao and Chen Duxiu, Hu was a staunch supporter of pragmatism. Hu Shih himself translated it into Chinese as , literally meaning experimentalism, since he strived to study both academic and social problems in the scientific approach (in the general sense), and advocated cultural reform under the guidance of pragmatism.

The second translation as was crafted long after pragmatism became popular in China at that time due to Hu's endeavor. This secondary translation has become dominant today, but the intention of such terminology substitution was highly suspected to politically defame Hu for the term 實用 had been evolved into a derogatory sense.

Writings

Hu was well known as the primary advocate for the literary revolution of the era, a movement which aimed to replace scholarly classical Chinese in writing with the vernacular spoken language, and to cultivate and stimulate new forms of literature. In an article originally published in ''New Youth'' in January 1917 titled "A Preliminary Discussion of Literature Reform", Hu originally emphasized eight guidelines that all Chinese writers should take to heart in writing:

#Write with substance. By this, Hu meant that literature should contain real feeling and human thought. This was intended to be a contrast to the recent poetry with rhymes and phrases that Hu saw as being empty. #Do not imitate the ancients. Literature should not be written in the styles of long ago, but rather in the modern style of the present era. #Respect grammar. Hu did not elaborate at length on this point, merely stating that some recent forms of poetry had neglected proper grammar. #Reject melancholy. Recent young authors often chose grave pen names, and wrote on such topics as death. Hu rejected this way of thinking as being unproductive in solving modern problems. #Eliminate old clichés. The Chinese language has always had numerous four-character sayings and phrases used to describe events. Hu implored writers to use their own words in descriptions, and deplored those who did not. #Do not use allusions. By this, Hu was referring to the practice of comparing present events with historical events even when there is no meaningful analogy. #Do not use couplets or parallelism. Though these forms had been pursued by earlier writers, Hu believed that modern writers first needed to learn the basics of substance and quality, before returning to these matters of subtlety and delicacy. #Do not avoid popular expressions or popular forms of characters. This rule, perhaps the most well-known, ties in directly with Hu's belief that modern literature should be written in the vernacular, rather than in Classical Chinese. He believed that this practice had historical precedents, and led to greater understanding of important texts.

In April of 1918, Hu published a second article in ''New Youth'', this one titled "Constructive Literary Revolution - A Literature of National Speech". In it, he simplified the original eight points into just four:

#Speak only when you have something to say. This is analogous to the first point above. #Speak what you want to say and say it in the way you want to say it. This combines points two through six above. #Speak what is your own and not that of someone else. This is a rewording of point seven. #Speak in the language of the time in which you live. This refers again to the replacement of Classical Chinese with the vernacular language.

Anson Hu (born on 4 July 1983) is a male Chinese pop singer and songwriter.

Biography

From a young age, Anson Hu showed great interest in music. At age 13, he was admitted to Shanghai Music Conservatory where he majored in singing. Two years later, he set a goal of releasing his first CD before his eighteenth birthday.

Anson's talents began to be recognized by the public in 1999 when he won the silver medal at the Shangai Music Awards New Singer Competition. He advanced to the finals, where he won the award for having the most potential of any singer. Because of this, he was discovered by the Go East Entertainment, Co. Ltd., with whom he signed a contract and released his first album, Wen Wu Shuang Quan , in August 2002. This was just after his nineteenth birthday. The album became an instant hit. The album won Anson many "Best New Artist" awards at the end of the year in China and overseas, and his song "the Monk" made the Top 10 lists of several charts. Another song "Telling me" also received several "Best Song of the Year" awards. In December, a second version of this album, entitled "Anson Hu", was released, which contained the same 10 tracks plus a karaoke version.

In July 2003, Anson released his second album, Upgrade 4147, which he helped produce himself. The album contained duets with popular singers Elva Hsiao and Ronald Cheng. With this album he again swept through the award ceremonies with several trophies under his belt; he also received awards from all over Asia. Anson's credibility as a musician continued to rise, and he gained more and more fans, in China and abroad.

Anson's early success is mirrored by his third and fourth album, Music Mix and Music Code, released in September 2004 and March 2006 respectively. Anson steadily began to win awards like "best" and "favorite male artist", graduating from "best new artist." Music Mix featured the wildly popular song "Waiting for You", which has become a fan favorite.

After releasing Music Code, Anson switched from Go East Entertainment and signed a contract under Gold Label Records, under which he released Music Mix and his subsequent albums.

Continuing his steady work, Anson released Men's Songs, his fifth album, in November 2007. While featuring a heartfelt and mature musical style that shows off Anson's piano skills, the album reflects upon the changes of a man's life and shows off Anson's superior musical talents.

Jam Hsiao () was born on 30 March 1987 at Taipei, Taiwan). He is a Taiwanese Mandopop singer. In summer 2007, Hsiao rose to fame after only three brief appearances in the first season of China Television (CTV)'s (中視) star search show, ''One Million Star'' (超級星光大道), which is a singing competition reality show similar to ''American Idol''. A self-taught player of numerous music instruments, Hsiao is known for his wide vocal ranges, unique singing style, diverse music genres, and astounding charisma in his live performance.

Biography

Born to father of Chinese descent and native Amis aboriginal 阿美族 mother, Hsiao inherited beautiful singing voice known for Taiwanese aborigines 原住民. Other family members include two older brothers and one older sister. Hsiao took a drum lesson at age 15 after being inspired by a song in a rock CD that Hsiao incidentally found at home – Bon Jovi’s first single "It’s My Life" from the album ''Crush'' released in 2000. Hsiao’s drum lessons only lasted for three months due to financial reasons. After that, Hsiao continued his journey in music by sharpening his drum-playing techniques without any further formal instruction in music.

At age of 16, Hsiao become an instructor for drum classes in a local music learning center. He also volunteered to teach drum classes in his community as a way to counsel local troubled teens, which made him a recipient of the ''Good Samaritan Award'' 善心獎 for two consecutive years. Hsiao was a hyper-energetic kid and a troubled early-teen himself; fortunately, music saved him. As Hsiao often joked about himself, “without music, I might have turned into a ruffian on the street”.

Hsiao also formed a rock band called “Diapason” with his friends and older brother, which Hsiao was the lead vocals and drummer. With his passion for music, Hsiao started teaching himself how to play a keyboard. At age 17, with only three-month experience of keyboard, Hsiao became a pub singer, and played his own chord while singing. As Hsiao recalled, “I didn’t have much thought...but I knew I love music, so I just kept on singing, playing [music], kept on practicing [instruments]…often for more than ten hours a day...and often could not stop ‘til I broke my last pair of drumsticks.”

Hsiao has always appreciated music of Bon Jovi, Mr. Big, Skid Row, Yoshiki of X Japan, Jeff Chang 張信哲, A-Mei 張惠妹, Jacky Cheung 張學友, and Na Ying 那英. Music of these artists has significant influence on Hsiao in his early life. As Hsiao matured, he was also inspired by Italian opera tenor, Luciano Pavarotti.

Music career

Debut

In 2007, Hsiao applied to compete in the second season of ''One Million Star''. However, the show’s production unit pulled him to appear in the first season as a tyrant challenger (踢館魔王) in order to “player kill (PK)” the show’s remaining contestants. The show introduced Hsiao as the “Strongest Challenger in the History” (史上最強挑戰者). In his first PK attempt, Hsiao challenged Stanly Hsu 許仁杰 by singing the song "The Only One In The World" (世界唯一的妳), and won. In his second PK attempt, Hsiao challenged the show’s most popular contestant, Aska Yang 楊宗緯 by singing the song "Betrayal" (背叛) , and won again. The viewership rating for this show reached 4.06 since Hsiao’s presence in May 2007. Encouraged by the high viewership rating, the show’s production unit had Hsiao and Yang compete one more time, head-to-head, by performing the same song, "New Endless Love" (新不了情). After witnessed Hsiao's last two PK performances, the hostess of the show, Momoko Tao 陶晶瑩, nicknamed Hsiao as the "King of Black Spiders” (黑蜘蛛) who imposed real threat to regular contestants. Although Yang got higher score than Hsiao in this round, Hsiao’s extraordinary showmanship immediately won him immense popularity. His fans became organized and founded "Hsiao Band 蕭幫" to support this talented boy. Although Hsiao is not a regular contestant for the show, he rose to fame so quickly that he was selected by Yahoo! Taiwan 雅虎奇摩 as the third most searched celebrity in 2007.

After merely three brief TV appearances, Hsiao’s fans rushed to the pubs and restaurants, where Hsiao worked, to hear his live performance. Whenever there was Hsiao’s scheduled performance, the pubs and restaurants were over-flooded with people – it was even extremely difficult to reserve a standing spot. Meanwhile, Hsiao’s personal blog got over 400,000 visits within two weeks since its launch.

Post-Talent-Show Career

Although Hsiao did not have any record company contract for almost a year since he became famous, many TV variety programs invited him to their shows because whenever Hsiao was the feature guest, viewing rate hiked. Media reported that Shin Band 信樂團 had invited Hsiao to join their band as the lead vocals. In addition, Hsiao’s powerful vocal and sudden popularity got A-Mei 張惠妹's attention. A-mei is known as Taiwan’s Queen of Pop. A-Mei asked Hsiao to be the feature male vocals for the duet “Moment of the First Sight” (一眼瞬間) in her 2007 music album ''Star''. In December 2007, Hsiao performed a medley of four nominated original themes in the ''Golden Horse Award'' 金馬獎, which is the most significant event for film industry in Taiwan. At this time, Hsiao was still an ordinary 20-year-old student with no record company contract. Needless to say, many record companies fought to recruit this young and fresh talent.

Warner Music Taiwan

In March 2008, Warner Music Taiwan and Hsiao entered a four-year contract. Rumor said the initial contract bonus from Warner Music reached NT$30,000,000.

On 16 June 2008, Hsiao’s debut album, ''Jam Hsiao Self Titled Album'' (蕭敬騰同名專輯), was released. It included two songs composed by Hsiao, as well as the works of fellow Mandoppp artists such as A-Shin of Mayday, A-Chin of F.I.R., Gary Chaw, Ching-Feng of Sodagreen. Hsiao's debut album ranked number one on the G-Music 玫瑰 and Five Music 五大 billboards at the same time for seven weeks. This album also claimed the number one place in Mandarin album charts in several Asian countries. Hsiao’s ''New-Song Premiere Concert'' (新歌發表會) took place on July 6, 2008 at Tamshui Fisherman's Wharf 淡水漁人碼頭 in Taiwan. In addition to performing the new songs from his debut album, Hsiao also sang a duet with each of his three guest singers, Vivian Hsu 徐若瑄, Khalil Fong 方大同, and Daniel Powter. Both Hsiao’s debut album and first solo concert enjoyed huge success.

On August 1, 2008, the revised version of his debut album, “''First Live''”, was released. This revised album not only includes the original debut album CD, but also an audio CD and a DVD of his live performance at Tamshui Fisherman's Wharf. The Limited- Edition, “''Ultimate Version''" (終極收藏版), of this album was released on September 26, 2008. In addition to what were included in the ''First Live'' version, the ''Ultimate Version'' also offer music videos, bonus music "Thank You" for fans, behind-the-scene videos, and Hsiao’s own photography and sketching works.

Currently, Hsiao is very popular not only in his native Taiwan, but also in mainland China, Hong Kong, and other Asian countries such as Malaysia and Singapore. His fanbase is large, diverse, and growing. Fans of Hsiao often call themselves members of “Hsiao Band 蕭幫”, and nickname Hsiao as their Chief 幫主. In the era of internet and global networking, members of Hsiao Band also exist in North America, South America, Australia, and Europe.

Characteristics

Hsiao’s solid and manly vocal carries an explosive force, yet it is also sensational and often touches the deepest heart of his audience, especially through his live performance. His deep, clear and penetrating voice stands him out from most Chinese singers. Hsiao is a soul of rock; nevertheless, his performance for songs of other genres is just as impressive — including love song, pop, jazz, R&B;, oldies, and even Taiwanese country, to name a few. One of the judges in ''One Million Star'', Kay Huang 黃韻玲, once said when she heard Hsiao’s voice for the first time, "I was so carried away… I felt intoxicated…it’s sentimental”. "This voice makes me want to marry him".

Contrary to his powerful performance and breath-taking charisma on stage, Hsiao is soft-spoken, quiet and shy off stage. Many journalists stumbled or faced hurdle while interviewing him; therefore, the media named him the “Number-One Guy With Least Words (省話一哥)". Hsiao admitted he is slow to warm up to people; however, he explained, once he is better acquainted to people and the environment, he can be very fun-loving and become more open to conversation, just like any boy at his same age.

Hsiao plays drums, keyboard, piano, guitar, flute, and saxophone. His other hobbies include sports (e.g. table tennis, billiards, badminton, basketball, golf, ice skating, biking, and skateboarding), magic, sketching, photography, and Rubik's Cube. He also enjoys entertaining his friends and fans with anti-humor jokes.

2008 - "Loving Each Other" (相親相愛) – A charity single that is a collaborative work of a group of pop singers contracted with Warner Music Taiwan, released in June 2008, as an effort to raise funds to help the victims of the 2008 earthquake in Sichuan, China.

2008 - "Lonesome For You" (寂寞還是你) – A single released in September 2008 through digital music download and a promotional CD for HTC Touch ''Viva'' mobile phone; this is the first song that was published with both music and lyrics written by Hsiao.

2008 - "To My Beloved" (給．愛人) – A charity single released on 19 December 2008 as AVCD EP including a music video shot in Italy. The music was written by Hsiao and dedicated to Genesis Social Welfare Foundation (創世基金會) to help them raise funds.

Karen Joy Morris, known more commonly in the Sinosphere as Karen Mok or Mok Man-Wai, (born 2 June 1970) is a three-time Golden Melody Award-winning Hong Kong-based actress and singer-songwriter.

Biography

Mok attended Diocesan Girls' School from primary to secondary grade in Hong Kong. When she was a F.5 student, she received the 1st Hong Kong Outstanding Students Awards. She later left Hong Kong in 1987 and studied abroad. She attended United World College of the Adriatic near Trieste, Italy from 1987 to 1989, and majored in Italian literature when studying at the University College London, University of London. Mok is the sister of the writer and producer Trevor Morris, and a descendant of Alfred Morris, the first principal of King's College, Hong Kong. She speaks English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Italian, and French. She is Eurasian: her father is half-Chinese and half-Welsh, while her mother is half-Chinese, quarter-Iranian, and quarter-German.

Mok is often credited as Karen Mok in Chinese movies, but as Karen Joy Morris (her birth name) in Hollywood movies. She supplied the voice of Princess Kida for the Cantonese dub of Disney's "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" (2001). Mok performed in the international tour of the hit Broadway musical ''Rent'' as Mimi during the Asian stops of the musical in 2005 and 2006.

In Oct 2008, Karen Mok launched her own brand of perfume in Hong Kong.

Activism

Mok is an advocate for animals and one of only five Asian celebrities to make People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Asia-Pacific's (PETA) first-ever Best-Dressed 2008 list. Mok has joined efforts to help bears in China whose bile is used for medicinal purposes/

In 2007, Mok was involved with MTV EXIT, a campaign against human trafficking in Asia. She presented ''Traffic: An MTV EXIT Special'', a documentary on trafficking.

Yang Mi (born September 12, 1986) is a Chinese actress. She is best known for her role as Guo Xiang in the 2006 television series ''The Return of the Condor Heroes'' and as Tang Xuejian in ''Chinese Paladin 3''. However, she has been gaining even greater popularity through her role as Luo Qingchuan in ''Palace''.

Yang is a student at the Performance Institute of Beijing Film Academy.

Career

Yang began acting at the age of four. She played a minor role as Beggar So's daughter in ''King of Beggars'' (1992), which starred Stephen Chow as the titular character. In the late 2000s, Yang rose to fame for her roles in television series such as ''The Return of the Condor Heroes'' (2006) and ''Chinese Paladin 3'' (2009). Her popularity increased after she starred as Luo Qingchuan in ''Palace'' (2011). Her increase in popularity from her performance in ''Palace'' helped land her a role in Gordon Chan's ''Painted Skin 2''. In 2010 she participated in ''Empires of the Deep'', a Chinese-American co-produced film with a budget of US$100 million. In 2011, Mei Ah Entertainment announced that it will be producing four tailored-made films for Yang due to the box office success of the horror film ''Mysterious Island'' (2011), which starred Yang.
