Convicted hate-criminal amused by home detention order

While the National Front have long claimed that they stand for law and order, FDB finds it somewhat poignant that a long term member (and former NF Youth Representative) Brendon Rimmer has just been convicted for assaulting an Asian youth; yet another conviction to go alongside his conviction last year for drunk driving.

Man makes light of his home detention on net

A Taupo man on home detention for attacking an Asian teenager allegedly spent his time at home posting white supremacist statements online and making light of his sentence.

Brendon Rimmer was sentenced to six months’ home detention in Taupo District Court this month and ordered to pay $350 reparation after pleading guilty to three charges of common assault.

The charges relate to an incident in Napier in July when Rimmer approached a group of four teenagers - aged between 15 and 17 - and verbally abused them before assaulting some of them.

Police told the court that Rimmer asked “why are you hanging around with this chink”? He then asked an Asian teenager what he was doing in “my country” before saying “why are you here? Get out of my country”.

A Nazi salute was delivered as gang tensions spilled into a court today when two brothers accused of a drive-by shooting appeared in the dock.

The police had a strong presence inside and outside the courtroom and bundled about 12 rival gang associates out of the Court House.

“I’m advised tensions are running high and we have seen a demonstration of that this morning,” said Christchurch District Court Judge Raoul Neave.

The group’s Australian leader, Patrick O’Sullivan who refers to himself as a Reverend argues it is their right to do so.
“We have a right to congregate our religion; if people don’t like it, tough luck,'’ he said. “There is nothing wrong with promoting the white race. Nobody is forcing no one to join it, so I am not apologetic.'’

Mr O’Sullivan refused to provide details on the group’s headquarters, saying only that it met at different venues in the inner-city and had a Collingwood PO box.

He would not disclose how many members the group has.

“We do not give out numbers. It’s open to a degree, but we just don’t give out numbers,'’ he said.
Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission chief executive Dr Helen Szoke said the commission could act against the group only if it received a complaint. Nobody has made a complaint to the commission to date.

“The Racial and Religious Tolerance Act has been passed to actually deal with inciting hatred. I can’t comment specifically about the Creativity Movement, but as a general rule displaying racist or anti-religious comments or behaviour that can be considered of inciting hatred is the sort of behaviour actually captured by the legislation,'’ she said.

The legislation allows the commission to pursue the removal of prejudice material and seek compensation on behalf of complaintants.

Yarra Council pursued the group under the state’s bill-posting laws after receiving a complaint about the group’s racist stickers in a Clifton Hill park (Leader, October 31, 2007).

Mayor Judy Morton said the group received a warning this time, but the council would take the group to the commission if it received more complaints.

“We do not support groups or individuals that are intolerant of other cultures and religions,'’ Ms Morton said. “If there are any reoccurrences of this group’s material appearing in public places, council would be interested in lodging a formal complaint with the commission.

“I encourage residents to do the same if they are offended by the action of any group.'’
The Racial and Religious Tolerance Act states a person must not, on the ground of the race, class or religion of another person “engage in conduct that incites hatred against, serious contempt for, or revulsion or severe ridicule of, that other person or class of persons.

The gathering in the backyard-cum-carport in Sydney’s south resembles a clandestine party organised by blokes who find it hard to get a girlfriend.

Despite the baking hot afternoon sun, many wear black T-shirts, boots and leather vests. A rack in the corner of the yard is selling other T-shirts. Their messages: Speak English or Die and Skippy’s Rule OK.

A thrash metal band has set up in the carport and party-goers slam their heads in time with the drums. “Prepare for war,” the singer yells, “leave our shores.” This is Australia Day, Australia First style.

There are only about 25 people here and that includes the members of two metal bands that have come to perform. And not everyone admits to being a member of Australia First. Still, the party claims its way of thinking is spreading in Sydney.

That night, according to spokesman Jim Saleam, the bands would play at a private Australia Day function in the Sutherland Shire - site of the 2005 Cronulla riots - at which the party would try to recruit young supporters ahead of its planned bid for seats on several NSW councils and registration as a federal political party.

The press archives are littered with similar claims of rising influence from Australia First and its predecessor, National Action - notorious for its involvement in a series of violent incidents. And there have been previous and unsuccessful election bids.

But the Cronulla riots, racist activity surrounding plans to build an Islamic school in the Sydney suburb of Camden, and the fake leaflet affair - involving the husband of former Liberal MP Jackie Kelly - apparently designed to capitalise on anti-Islamic fears in the electorate of Lindsay, have some worried that this time Australia First could be right.

Mr Saleam describes Australia First as nationalist, anti-immigration, anti-trade and anti-multiculturalism.

After a few Australia Day drinks, the membership begins to expand on these themes.

Terry [Cooksley], a 69-year-old from the Sydney suburb of Mount Druitt, admits he likes to see people like himself when he walks down the street, which he says is “only natural” given our bodily germs form “a defence system against foreigners”.

Terry’s theory on cross-cultural marriage is similarly original: we only marry outside our racial group in a sub-conscious attempt to punish our mothers or fathers.

Mike, “about 54″, from Bexley, says he backs an end to migration because “people from the Third World don’t know how to live in a civilised world”. They mug people on their way to the corner shop, Mike says, confiding that he has “been confronted about three or four times by people of Middle Eastern appearance” because “I like to wear military dress”. He is, incidentally, also wearing a T-shirt declaring No Camel Jockey races on the Beach. It has a picture of a man on a camel and a line through it.

Mike admits he was not actually assaulted, but says that’s what his assailants “wanted to do” after he informed them of his previous service in the military. Actually, he was in the reserves for a time back in the 1970s and “I come from a military family that I’m very proud of”.

“Fantasy” is how Bruce Baird, the former federal MP for the electorate which covers the Sutherland Shire, describes Australia First’s belief in its growing influence. “I think (the idea) that they’re making any progress at all is illusory.”

Mr Baird says the racism that came to a head at Cronulla “has been defused and addressed” and that Australia First’s chances of winning a seat on the Sutherland Shire council are zilch.

Michael Kennedy, a former detective and now lecturer in police studies at the University of Western Sydney, is not so sure.

Parties like Australia First will always “appeal to a certain percentage of the community”, he says, but now there was a “growing base of people” in NSW who were susceptible to nationalist ideas because of disillusionment with the state’s mainstream political parties and the crumbling health and transport systems.

Australia First could well win a seat on a council, Mr Kennedy says, but the party’s real danger lies in its ability to “fuel the racist fire”.

In any case, Mr Saleam says his party views elections as “only part . . . of what we do”. It is also interested in “inculcating attitudes and extending . . . the idea of cultural defence” and in more confrontationist politics of the type employed by National Action before its demise.

But, he says, “you need to be much more careful of confrontation now because of the nature of the laws”. Mr Saleam was in jail in the early ’90s for being an accessory to a gun attack on the residence of an African National Congress representative.

“If you use confrontation, you have to use it in a much more precise and scientific way otherwise you’ll simply be arrested,” he says - and then tries to usher The Age out of the party, so that he can brief the band members and others heading down to Cronulla on how to avoid arrest that night.

Which might not be necessary. Lead singer of the band Machete, known as Ryan, doesn’t appear to be planning much in the way of “cultural defence”: “We heard there was a gig going on, we had nothing better to do so we come up here and just figured, what the hell, let’s . . . play some metal.”

RACIST hate mail has left two single mothers in Paradise fearing for their safety and terrified to let their children outside.
The Ugandan families received hand-written threats on Tuesday, January 15 - two days after moving to their new Harris St homes.

“Africans. We’re all watching you …'’ the identical letters began. “You f*** our neighbourhood up, we will f*** you up. Is that clear.

“We don’t want you here. You are not welcome.'’

Mother of six Abuk Deng Dor, who cannot speak English, told the East Torrens Messenger through translator and sister-in-law Athieng Ngot Riiny she was “very afraid'’.

She would not let her children play outside for fear of attack and asked if she had moved into a “particular area for white people'’ only.

The two incidents follow the recent relocation of an Elizabeth family by the Australian Refugee Association and Anglicare, in the wake of similar threats.

Ms Dor said she was shocked to be confronted by racism in Australia.

“Australians are educated people she thought there would be no discrimination against her,'’ Ms Riiny translated.

“Because she received the letter she is afraid to leave the children alone here.

“(She says) these white people, they don’t fake it when they say they’ll kill you.

“In Australia they say things like that they mean it. That is her fear.'’

Ms Dor fled Uganda with her six children in 2005 and initially lived in Fulham.

The family moved to Paradise this month because a larger home was available.

Hectorville Catholic Church new arrivals support group member Gerald Hinton was helping the Dor family move in when
Ms Dor’s 19-year-old son Riiny Ngot found the letter.

“It’s completely un-Australian as far as I’m concerned,'’ Mr Hinton said.

“We need to shame people that this shouldn’t go on.'’

Mr Hinton reported the incident to Holden Hill Police.

The second refugee to receive the letter single mother of seven Abuk Bol Nyang was unavailable for comment this week because of translation difficulties.

However Mr Hinton, who also helped the Nyang family with their move, said she was equally shaken and shared the same fears as Ms Dor.

The Frederic Ozanam Housing Association, in conjunction with St Vincent de Paul, provided the houses for the two families.

Association executive officer Tony Roach was shocked to hear they had received threatening letters in their new homes.

“I’m extremely disappointed we have housed seven refugee families in Adelaide in different suburbs,'’ he said.

“They have been exemplary tenants and this is the first time anything like this has happened.'’

Campbelltown Mayor Simon Brewer was appalled by the letters and said the council welcomed people from all backgrounds.

“We don’t care who, where, what religion, what colour and hope that as people get to know them and they settle into the community this sort of fear factor or knee-jerk reaction stops,'’ he said.

“It must be terrible for them to come here expecting a wonderful, free, tolerant country and then get this.'’

Neighbors of the two families on Harris St said they could not believe such racist behaviour was taking place on their street.

“I’m really shocked. I thought this was a really nice street,'’ Lorraine Parker said.

“People always brag about Australia being multicultural, and you have some small faction that react that way.'’

Across the street Neil Kavalick labelled it “absolutely shocking'’.

“Everybody’s got the right to live,'’ he said.

Australian Refugees Association assistant director Christine Loveday said threatening letters were received by new migrants “only very rarely'’ but said the association received some threats.

“We do get some nasty messages here too sometimes,'’ she said.

“But generally the community is very nice to them and very welcoming.'’

Ms Loveday said the number of new arrivals had doubled in the past 10 years, with 1600 migrants, refugees and asylum seekers moving to SA annually.

Police did not respond before presstime.

But I’m beginning to believe that Saleam is The Dice Man of the Australian far right and, like Luke Rhinehart, often — entertaining. In the latest installment of the continuing saga of a quack who’s gone to the dogs, it’s been revealed that the newest Fuehrer to be installed in Queensland, John Drew, is (gasp!) possibly gay. Naturally, this unnatural proposition has sparked a pained reaction on the part of the local battalion of the God Hates Fags Brigade.

Thus Fellow Queenslander ‘Wodensvolk’ / Carl D. Thompson — a deadset neo-Nazi and, not coincidentally, an exceptionally popular choice among fellow Stormfront Down Under (SFDU) members for the position of Moderator — remarks:

All sorts of allegations have been made against this man, most of which involve tennis and an unhealthy interest in teenage boys.
How much is true, I do not know.
Australia First needs to conduct a formal investigation to determine Drew’s fitness to remain both in the party and in his position.
If a formal investigation finds that there is no basis for these allegations (some of which are vile) the man’s innocence should be proclaimed from the rooftops.
If there is found to be substance to these allegations, well . . . [intimation of extreme violence]

‘303SMLE’ / Jim Perren chimes in with a veiled threat towards Darrin Hodges, the apparent source of these thoroughly scurrilous rumours. According to Jim, Darrin forgot to tell him of his concerns over John’s supposed homosexuality before publishing them on his blog. Or, to be precise, resurrecting some old posts on SF and wedding these to John’s role as Secretary of the Brisbane branch of Australia First.

So, what’s the evidence?

First, the announcement (SFDU, June 13, 2007) of plans to open a gay sauna at The Greyhound Hotel in St Kilda last July produced the usual splutterings by the Moral Majority on SF. The fanatical ferret-loving female fascist (and member of the Newcastle branch of the Australia First Party) ‘ladyfuro’ exclaimed:

What the hell is wrong with our society[?] This used to be illegal & now these dirty little handbags are catered to as much as immigrants are!
Just think…now the filthy paedophiles have some where out in the open to meet…if a terrorist truly wanted to act…

Why, they’d do just what David Copeland did in Brixton, UK in April 1999, and explode a bomb at The Greyhound, wouldn’t they? I wouldn’t be surprised if Jim Perren’s comrade Peter Campbell entertained similar phantasies when he allegedly distributed a tract called ‘How to build a David Copeland special’ among local white supremacists.

Another fascist twat named ‘SEIRYU’, on the other hand (who rather indelicately expresses his political perspective through the use of a Nazi flag as his avatar), expresses a real depth of knowledge regarding The Greyhound’s local environs:

Which brings us to ‘Wagnerite’, aka John Drew, who recalls (June 15, 2007):

The second and third equally bizarre references to male homosexuality by our Jew-hating, Wagner-loving, tennis-playing AF Secretary also appear on SF, and were made in response to the posting of a link to a vewy scawy and quasi-official sounding document called MEDICAL CONSEQUENCES OF WHAT HOMOSEXUALS DO, by Paul Cameron (of/) The Family Research Institute, a Christian anti-pink think tank based in Colorado. May 29, 2007:

As long as men do [not?!?] have anal sex I cannot see any problem with homosexuality. They have to pull their partners off in much the same way that women pull their male partners off. Women are often reluctant to have sex frequently whereas homosexuals are always ready for sex as they often produce lots of semen if they have a good diet and keep very fit.

Females are often quite aerobically unfit and so are unable to match the libido of sexually active men who can sustain an erection for a lengthy time.

Quite. Further (May 4, 2007):

Fancy having sex with a fat, unfit lady? Contrast this with being pulled off by a very fit and athletic male who keeps himself in absolutely wonderful physical condition…

But who is John Drew? To begin with, Drew THE ANTI-IMMIGRANT ACTIVIST! was profiled by Zoo magazine in August last year, along with Dävid Palmer (Imperial Wizard of the Australian Ku Klux Klan) THE NEO-NAZI! and David Innes (anti-immigration writer and radio DJ) THE WHITE SEPARATIST!. According to Drew himself:

I put my nationalist beliefs into practice by joining Australia First. I used to be in One Nation but my radical [political] beliefs and policy ideas saw me dumped as Queensland State Policy Co-ordinator and as the [candidate] for Ryan in the 2004 federal election [Drew stood in 2001]. I was so irritated I resigned and then joined the more radical Australia First.

According to a Doctor:

John Drew is off his nut. He’s involved in the Patriotic Youth League, the Australia First youth division, yet he’s in his 50s; he’s a bit old to be involved in a youth group.

Well… was involved in the Patriotic Youth League. After Stuart McBeth bailed, a local meathead called Luke Connors stepped forward. After developing an even rarer form of brain cancer through excessive phone use however (or rumour has it), John was left holding the bag, which he now keeps in the closet (along with the rest of his baggage). Two further facts about Our Man in Brisbane are that he used to drive a cab in Sydney and that he thinks Doctor Saleam is Great. Really Great. In fact, in a thread on SFDU titled ‘Jim Saleam… a great Australian’ (April 26, 2006) Drew writes:

In my 38 years as a political activist I have never seen any person so successful as Dr Jim Saleam. He is truly a great [A]ustralian.

Spate of anti-Semitic vandalism in Melbourne

MELBOURNE’S Jewish community was preyed on last weekend with a synagogue, two eateries and a local phone box all targeted by vandals.

Caulfield Hebrew Congregation (CHC), one of Melbourne’s largest and most prominent synagogues, and Caulfield North’s kosher Park Grill Restaurant were daubed with swastikas.

In addition, Glick’s Bakery in Balaclava’s Carlisle Street suffered thousands of dollars of damage when its two shopfronts were partially smashed in a rock attack.

A phone box on Bambra Road in Caulfield was also spray-painted with a swastika.

A spokesperson from Victoria Police said it was too early to link the attacks and said there was no evidence at the moment to suggest the Glicks vandalism was racially motivated. The spokesperson said local police were investigating.

Victorian parliamentarian Helen Shardey, member for Caulfield, called on the police “to use the full extent of the law to prosecute the perpetrators” once they are found.

At CHC, a concrete fencepost outside the shul’s main entrance was sprayed with a large black swastika late on Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

The congregation’s honorary secretary, Allen Milner, told The AJN the vandalism had been reported to the Community Security Group (CSG) and Victoria Police.

He said no witnesses had come forward and he had no clues as to who had perpetrated the incident.

Milner said he thought last weekend’s incident was an isolated instance of vandalism however, he said the shul, which was founded by Holocaust survivors, would consider installing extra security, including closed-circuit security cameras. These cameras would be in addition to the existing precautions, including a full-time caretaker and security guards when prayer services are underway.

On Sunday night Glick’s Bakery, one of Melbourne’s most recognisable Jewish icons, was vandalised. Glick’s was the only store in the long shopping strip that was damaged in the attack.

Penina Glasman, shop attendant and the daughter of bakery founder Mendel Glick, said that between 10pm and 4am, somebody had thrown large rocks at the bakery and Mister Glick’s pizza restaurant next door.

Glasman said they were lucky the store windows were shatterproof glass because it prevented more damage inside the shop. She added that after two attacks in six months they are considering upgrading security to possibly incorporate metal security shutters or cameras.

In August last year, two Orthodox teenagers were assaulted outside the store and a chair was thrown through the store window. No person has been charged over the incident.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said the motive for the Glick’s attack was unknown and local police were investigating a possible case of breaking and entering or a racial motive.

Local parliamentarian Shardey said the rise in anti-Semitic incidents in the area was “of great concern”.

She called on the police to work quickly to find the perpetrators and said once they are caught she hoped they would be charged under the Racial and Religious Tolerance Act.

“That legislation has been passed for these kind of acts and it is time that the Government took these crimes seriously,” Shardey said.

She said she would speak up in state Parliament about the incidents and would attempt to encourage a greater police presence in the area, particularly on Carlisle Street.

CSG would not comment on the specific incidents, but both the CSG and the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission reminded the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the CSG on (03) 9523 0434.

The police are also calling on any witnesses to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

THE riot squad will be on stand-by on Australia Day to prevent Cronulla-style violence erupting at hot spots around Sydney, including Camden.

Racial tensions are running high in the semi-rural town, which has fuelled anti-Muslim sentiment after far-right-wing groups and politicians joined locals to fight plans for an Islamic school.

Soon after plans for the school were announced, pigs’ heads on stakes and an Australian flag were left on the planned school site. A crucifix with Bible passages written on it also appeared.

Locals, especially teenagers, wear T-shirts with Australian flags printed on them, while bumper stickers featuring the Southern Cross and “No Muslim school for Camden” adorn cars.

NSW Police said the public order riot squad would be ready to deal with any trouble on Saturday.

Australia Day operation commander Assistant Commissioner Frank Mennilli said people deserved to celebrate the day without the threat of bullying or harassment.

“I would be disappointed if anyone tried to exploit community celebrations on Australia Day for their own purpose,” he said. “Anyone who acts inappropriately or breaks the laws will be dealt with by police.”

The warning comes after reports that white supremacist groups, including Australia First, have planned a rally at the proposed Camden school site on the national holiday.

It has also been reported that similar rallies have been planned for the north-western suburb of Annangrove, which was the site of anti-Muslim protests when a prayer hall was built, and Cronulla, the scene of race riots in 2005.

Hundreds of people “demonstrated” at the beachside suburb on December 11, 2005, yelling racist chants, and chasing and bashing people of Middle Eastern appearance. An ambulance crew and police were also targeted. Twenty-five people were injured; two were stabbed in apparent revenge attacks.

It is understood the Anzac cenotaph in Hyde Park has also been considered a protest site.

Assistant Commissioner Mennilli confirmed police had been in talks with community leaders in Camden to “identify local issues”.

“Local police have met regularly with local council and residents’ groups to facilitate planning to ensure that Australia Day celebrations run smoothly,” he said.

“We recognise everyone has a right to an opinion and to voice that opinion, but police will respond immediately to anyone who thinks they can step outside the law to express those opinions with anti-social actions.

“As with any day when large groups of people gather, police will have a presence and we will ensure police will do their job so people can take this chance to celebrate.”

Last December a large protest, organised by the Reverend Fred Nile’s Christian Democratic Party, was held in Camden.
