Alien: Covenant. Everything would have been fine if the characters weren't idiots

This movie's events completely circle around the stupid decisions of people who have supposedly "trained" for this. Not one of them wear environmental isolation suits when going into a planet with unknown flora and fauna. If they'd simply said "hmm we don't know anything about this ecosystem we are going into, we should probably be careful" instead of walking in wearing nothing but hiking gear and their hopes and dreams no one would have gotten infected. They are supposed to be experts yet they traipsed around like they're on a trail in Yellowstone national park instead of treating it as it was, an unknown hostile alien environment. It is impossible to connect with characters or feel even remotely sorry for them when they make the stupidest of decisions that any Cub Scout who's seen Star Trek could tell was a bad idea. This is just another movie whose entire storyline would be invalidated and circumvented if the characters weren't morons.

Alien: Covenant - why are all the crew members so stupid?

I wanted to like this movie, it’s beautifully shot as expected and has some solid action, but seriously why was every person in this movie so dumb? Typically tropes of people walking alone in places they shouldn’t, Guy lighting a cig 5 minutes into being on a new planet, etc. But by far the most egregious scene was the couple having sex and being killed. What in the flying fuck was that? People are dying, your ship is under attack, alien life forms are eating people alive, but not let’s fool around a bit in the shower real quick. It’s like something you’d see in some 80s fourth sequel of a horror film. Some of the choices Ridley Scott made in this movie were baffling. I about checked out when Michael Fassbender was kissing Michael Fassbender. This movie had some decent ideas, but it was a mess. I also was not a fan of David’s motives in this film, felt totally forced. Scott just keeps trying to add another good chapter to the series, and he swings and misses

In Alien: Covenant (2017), the Engineer Docking Claw ship is seen crashed in the mountains for a brief second when the Covenant crew leave the planet

In Alien: Covenant (2017), the Engineer Docking Claw ship is seen crashed in the mountains for a brief second when the Covenant crew leave the planet. This might indicate that a battle took place between the two spacecraft and the Engineers actually tried to defend themselves against David. Both ships would crash, but on the opposite sides of the city (we see that David's Juggernaut also crashed into a forest, but no explanation was given in the movie).

Michael Fassbender is awesome in Alien Covenant.

It's one of the cases where the movie is carried hard by one single performance. Although I do like Covenant more than most, Michael Fassbender is the biggest reason. He plays 2 androids who are very different from each other and there isn't a single weak moment from hum. It's like Fassbender was a huge fan of the Alien series and was just so glad to be in Alien movies.

Walter is your regular good robot but Michael uses great voice control and minimal eye movements to sell his performance as a robot. David is deliciously evil and quoting poems left & right with gravitas. Michael is having a hell of a time as David. In Prometheus he was still kept in rein but in Covenant David is let lose and what a menace he becomes.

My favortie 2 scenes from him are:

  1. When he releases the black goo over the alien race world and quotes Ozymandias, that is a pure chill inducing moment.

  2. It's a very short scene but shows what a talent Fassbender is. He utters the line at the very end: "don't let the bedbugs bite" as he puts to cryosleep one of the crew members. That delivery & expressions along with the realization of what actually happened at the end is magnificently pulled off.

I would like to see a sequel to Covenant just for more Fassbender as David.

I do not understand the hate for Alien: Covenant.
false

Maybe it's just because I only saw it once in theaters, but I do not understand the hate for Alien: Covenant.

Of course it's not on the same level as Alien or Aliens. How can we expect it to be? Those two movies were exceptionally great which is why we love them. Most films will never reach that status.

In my opinion, Covenant's biggest flaws are dumb characters and killing Shaw offscreen. I can live with that.

On the other hand, Covenant creates a feeling of exploration and adventure in the first act, horror in the second, and action in the third. That's awesome.

Covenant also had memorable moments through out. Was no one else spooked out by the back burster or head butting alien?

Also, I would watch Michael Fassbender in just about anything. He crushes the role as Walter and David.

I think it's a good movie and deserves more love. Why do people hate it?
