It's one of the cases where the movie is carried hard by one single performance. Although I do like Covenant more than most, Michael Fassbender is the biggest reason. He plays 2 androids who are very different from each other and there isn't a single weak moment from hum. It's like Fassbender was a huge fan of the Alien series and was just so glad to be in Alien movies.
Walter is your regular good robot but Michael uses great voice control and minimal eye movements to sell his performance as a robot. David is deliciously evil and quoting poems left & right with gravitas. Michael is having a hell of a time as David. In Prometheus he was still kept in rein but in Covenant David is let lose and what a menace he becomes.
My favortie 2 scenes from him are:
When he releases the black goo over the alien race world and quotes Ozymandias, that is a pure chill inducing moment.
It's a very short scene but shows what a talent Fassbender is. He utters the line at the very end: "don't let the bedbugs bite" as he puts to cryosleep one of the crew members. That delivery & expressions along with the realization of what actually happened at the end is magnificently pulled off.
I would like to see a sequel to Covenant just for more Fassbender as David.

I finally saw Alien: Covenant last week, and when trying to find out more, I heard a lot of people dislike the movie, just like a lot of people like the other 2 movies named above (and also Alien 3, but I also didn't like that that much myself).
Just wanted to say I do really like these 3 movies, and am curious if there are many people like me😅

From what I've gathered, it seems a lot of people got very upset with the direction of the latest Alien movies. I find this interesting, since most people also praise the cinematography, acting, sets, aesthetics and atmosphere. The problem seems to primarily lie with the plot and direction of the franchise, as these movies explored new topics and subjects as well as telling a new story within the universe. I suppose a lot of people just wanted the original alien again.
What I think people sort of forget, is just how stale the Alien formula got by Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection. Alien (1979) was a very fresh and unique movie at the time and was extremely influential. Aliens (1986) stayed fairly fresh by pivoting the genre more towards action, with a different group of characters. Because of this change Aliens to me felt like a pretty natural continuation from Alien and didn't get stale. Alien 3 and eventually Alien Resurrection felt very uninspired and stale, and mainly relied on the Alien IP more than anything. It simply took the original Alien and changed a few minor details while essentially keeping the exact same formula.
So keeping that in mind, I think it was a smart move to evolve the franchise and explore more aspects than the constant reappearance of the already known Xenomorph for the 5th and 6th time. I also then want to raise a point, that Proemtheus and Alien: Covenant in fact felt very faithful to the franchise. For, as many people forget, in the very first movie they stumble upon a large creature later known as an engineer and that whole aspect was left out by all the sequels. Ridley Scott created Alien, so it isn't crazy to assume this guy had a view this world where it was suppose to go.
I am a major fan of this series and can find at least some enjoyment in nearly all the movies. However, I think I enjoy Ridley Scott's direction of the series the most.

I recently did a post about Alien Resurrection and wanted to follow it up with this because it seems like Prometheus and Covenant were getting a lot of negative comments. Are they flawed? YES. But if you are a fan of the Alien movies how can you not love these films? Is there any other scifi horror movies that can even compete with the special effects, body horror, crazy creatures, gore, cool space suits? If they are bad then compared to what? I would love to hear thoughts/recommendations here! :)

This movie's events completely circle around the stupid decisions of people who have supposedly "trained" for this. Not one of them wear environmental isolation suits when going into a planet with unknown flora and fauna. If they'd simply said "hmm we don't know anything about this ecosystem we are going into, we should probably be careful" instead of walking in wearing nothing but hiking gear and their hopes and dreams no one would have gotten infected. They are supposed to be experts yet they traipsed around like they're on a trail in Yellowstone national park instead of treating it as it was, an unknown hostile alien environment. It is impossible to connect with characters or feel even remotely sorry for them when they make the stupidest of decisions that any Cub Scout who's seen Star Trek could tell was a bad idea. This is just another movie whose entire storyline would be invalidated and circumvented if the characters weren't morons.

She doesn't even get top billing, Tom Skerrit does. In the first hour of the movie, the focus appears to be on Skerrit, Veronica Cartwright and John Hurt. Sigourney Weaver is a mostly background character, someone you wouldn't expect to be the last survivor and protagonist.
They also pulled a Psycho with Skerrit's character, even bolder than Janet Leigh's, since Leigh didn't even get top billing in PSYCHO. Skerrit did in ALIEN.
By the 2nd half, the mood changes when Weaver takes over and we get to see more of her. Weaver's performance is superb, it's a far cry from her action type part in ALIENS. In ALIEN, she's just struggling to survive.

I was shocked at the level of hostility these movies have recieved. I found both to be very enjoyable, absolutely gorgeous and interesting. I was never bored and really could feel the tension these movies tried to make the audience feel. Sometimes it seems that people just can't get over previous installments, but I feel like you can't ever have a first experience again. But I really like the themes both of these movies work on. Are they perfect no, yes characters make some stupid decisions. And most of the characters are just there to be killed. Or to Be another version of Ripley. But damn I was entertained were you not?
