Alien Resurrection underrated?

Im rewatching it now on hulu and I think its great. A lot of iconic scenes, the underwater chase, the basketball court, the "whats inside me??" . The score is very well done too. Its cool to see what happend when the military finally got their hands on the Alien. Thoughts?

false

About an hour and 6 minutes in they’re underwater and one guy is bear crawling underwater while carrying the dude who has problems with his legs. That detail alone is so good to me.

The dramatic scene where she realizes what’s in the pods, on the table, and burns them.

The aliens arguing before they kill the other and use its acid blood to escape earlier in the movie. Them talking was kind of sick. Maybe I thought they’d communicate different but the representation of communication was dope.

Weavers response to “who are you?”; “I’m its mother”

Winona’s “please wait”

I totally get like scenes where Weaver shoots the alien from below as the others are running in that one chamber earlier on. Why didn’t its blood do anything as she fucking blasted that thing? But dudes there’s so many good scenes in this movie.

This movies actually pretty great so what gives?!

Alien Resurrection is ludicrous

I’m not going to go over everything wrong with this movie, but it’s absurd. I’m supposed to believe everyone held their breath for that entire underwater scene? The alien uses its inner jaw, not its hand, to press buttons? They spit acid now? Ripley is somehow great at basketball? They still have toaster ovens 300 years from now? Earth isn’t a climate disaster? Come on!

Edit: all of this isn’t to say I didn’t enjoy it for what it was. But it seemed like a spoof more than a continuation of the story. All I could think the whole time was “Sigourney must have gotten paid a shitload for this”. And it turns out that was correct.

Edit: that scene was a minimum of 3 minutes long, they were all swimming as fast as they could, one guy had another dude tied to his back, and they were all screaming half the time. Come on. I’ll even concede the toaster oven but this scene is beyond belief by any stretch of the imagination.

Edit: I fucking get it, she made the shot

Edit: ok, who reported me to Reddit cares 😂

ALIEN RESURRECTION should have worked. Promising director, strong cast, proper budget, and it's, by far, the dullest and least memorable ALIEN movie. What happened?

I watched DELICATESSEN and I loved it. Jean Pierre Jeunet was a distintive filmmaker who knew how to direct so how could he end up making such a bland and surprisingly generic ALIEN movie?

I hated the Ripley Clone turned into Wonder Woman. It's just lame and defeats a major element about Ripley that it's crucial, she's a survivor and we're invested in seeing her escape through human means. Having her turn into She-Ra, it makes it into a lame episode of The Bionic Woman. I never felt Ripley was in danger so I didn't care.

And what a waste of Ron Perlman. I like that he starts out as this smug jerk who actually does some cool stuff but then they make him Ripley's punching bag.

I was so bored by Winona Ryder's cyborg character. The whole maternal thing doesn't work with a grown woman, sorry.

I will say the look, I liked, this is something that Jeunet brought from his work, his style. But the rest was just boring and unexciting.

I would much rather see Kristen Stewart drowning in UNDERWATER. At least, that movie kept me entertained.

Bravo to the people that bought out every single copy listen on eBay for cheap. Didn’t think people would be this dumb to pay more than double its value after the announcement but here we are. Might as well list my copy. At this point I have no problem taking money from a fool.

I hope nobody here was planning to buy Alien: Resurrection for PS1 in the near future.

Alien Resurrection is good. Fight me.

I mean, it expands on the lore, it's sometimes clever, it's campy and cool. It doesn't try much else.

Characters are good, the dialogues are good and the plot is...ok.

Also, visuals effects hold up pretty well.

Am I saying it is great? Am I saying that all characters are memorable? Well, no. But at least it's good. For me, it's even better than Alien3 and more fun than Covenant. It's that, fun and pretty well directed too.

So, what do you think? Wanna settle this on a PVP match in AVP? Let's go.

This seems like the appropriate time of year to revisit Alien Resurrection

This was the first Alien movie I really watched. I saw it in the theater as a 16-year-old (a perk of being friends with a senior). I can appreciate that it might not meet the standards of longtime fans. I’ve felt that way about other franchise newbies — wrong entry point, they don’t get it the way they should get it. I still think it’s better than most action or slasher movies. If this movie came out five years later, the soundtrack would be full of awful Nu Metal music. That alone puts it in a sweet spot.

Each Alien movie is its own genre. Resurrection is a comic book movie. Nearly every shot is beautiful. The characters are more caricatures and I enjoy how they are drawn. From the gruff-voiced Elgyn to the apeish Ron Perlman to the cartoonish Dan Hedaya. I like Vriess’s relationship to Call. And it’s always fun to have Leland Orser losing his shit.

I like that this isn’t a slasher movie where we are waiting for everyone to die. I like that the majority of the crew survives. I like that the protagonist are not good people.

I like the characterization of Ripley here. She’s half-woman/half-panther. I enjoy her joyful fatalism. I know when I was 16, I liked that they were apprehensive to visit Earth.

The newborn design definitely needs a second draft - the nose tip, gynecomastia, and the tummy vagina should have been 86’d. I like the other evolutions of the xenomorphs and the scene where Ridley gets sucked into the nest is cool. I like the idea that different environments and species would influence its evolution. All the tubes and spines and Giger-weirdness is why I watch these movies.

The terribleness of the basketball scene has been overstated. It goes by quickly — the movie as a whole cooks. There’s no slow point in the theatrical cut (which I prefer).

I can’t believe the underwater scene has any detractors. So many movies keep their characters underwater for unreasonable lengths of time. All the beats of that scene are solid. And the swimming Aliens still look great — as do all of the effects. How many films from that era can say that?

For better or worse, Tom Woodruff and Alec Gillis deserve more credit for the film’s direction. They are the special effects coordinators.

The whiskey cube is still one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a movie. Something I’d hope we’d have by now. If not flying cars, then surely the Alien Resurrection whiskey cube!

Also the shot of Winona’s eyes in the chapel scene still sticks with me. First time I’d seen a ring light — and the last until the pandemic.

NEEDLESS EDIT: To say that the boots in the movie (mostly New Rock) are awesome. I still want a pair, but they are a few hundred dollars and their quality has apparently slipped.
