Aaron Burr

Aaron Burr was an anti slavery feminist who treated Native Americans with respect. Also when he shot Hamilton lets not forget that Hamilton had been horrible to him before the 1804 governor election. Hamilton had been purposely spreading lies about Burr for years at that point. Burr would have had good reason to challenge Hamilton to a dual but he always wanted to be friends with him. After Dave and Gar covered the man, I feel like people have turned into Burr- Bros and sing his praises repeatedly.

However, I can't help but feel like this still comes off as founder worship that we as a society need to move away from.

It feels like every decade, Americans handpick one of the founders to lionize as being the least problematic and unsung out of the bunch.

In the in the 70s it was John Adams & Company, in the 90s and early 2000s it was Jefferson, during the Obama years it was Alexander Hamilton, and now it's Aaron Burr.

All of these guys were privileged white guys who profited off of black and Indigenous bodies ( even Burr did some unsavory things with his wife's slave among other things) and that gets lost whenever one of these figures are repurposed into popular culture.

We should be telling the stories of the many black and brown figures who were overlooked by history, not reshaping founder XYZ to fit into today's values and progressivism.

I thought that a cool little foreshadowing thing was when Burr says "fools who run their mouths off wind up dead" John Laurens spoke directly after him. And then after "Showtime" he says like I said.

Former Vice-President and duelist Aaron Burr died in Port Richmond in 1836 at the St. James Hotel. I wrote a little about the Staten Island neighborhood here:

Aaron Burr did immediately regret shooting Hamilton and he asked to be there on his deathbed, but he was told it was impossible because it would make it more obvious he shot him. He was told to go in hiding because he knew dueling was illegal.

Okay, so sources say that Aaron Burr loved his daughter. He made sure she was educated, taught her feminist values (even though he, himself, wasn't such a real feminist), etc. Her (his daughter, Theodosia) mother had already passed away. So why, in the name of G-d, did he go to the duel to kill Hamilton? Sources also say that he was prepping to actually fire at Hamilton. Either way (if he threw away his shot or let Hamilton shoot him), it'd impact her negatively—one, her father would die, leaving her an orphan. Or, two, he'd be a murderer, making her live in the shadow of a killer. If he loved his daughter, why did he go to the duel?

Even if it was an honor thing, people saw him preparing to kill Hamilton. He could've thrown away his shot like Hamilton. In fact, Hamilton had clearly stated to multiple people that he planned to throw it away. It's possible that Burr knew his plans.

I may not understand because I didn't live during his time. I may not understand because I don't have children. I may not understand for a multitude of reasons. But, I feel that if I was Theodosia, I'd be fuming.

I have noticed that in the original Broadway recording, Hamilton gives a nervous chuckle in response to Aaron Burr's statement, "that depends who's asking." This is conspicuously absent in the version on Disney – almost as though in the recording, he is playing along with Aaron Burr's joke, but in the Disney film, he is already a bit sceptical of what he is saying.

Similarly, I find the quote from Washington " Close the door on your way out" in the Disney version to be much more forceful and dismissive than in the recording. What is the reason for this dash? Is it because emotions and reality come out in the life performances in a way that they don't on the recording, or was there a deliberate change over time to have more animosity from the characters towards Aaron Burr in these moments?
