On this day in labor history, the 1991 to 1998 Frontier Hotel and Casino strike began in Las Vegas, Nevada. Approximately 550 workers represented by the Culinary Union, went on strike after the hotel rejected a contract offered by many other hotels in the city. Expecting a short labor action, the strike ended up lasting six and a half years. During the strike period, there were numerous episodes of violence. One in 1993 saw a fight break out between picketers and a tourist couple. The strike ended in 1998 with the sale of the casino to a businessman from Kansas who promised a union contract with increased wages and backpay.
