Saturday, September 16 2017 Settler violence. Israeli army and police stand idly by! Today, Saturday, September 16, 2017, Ta’ayush activists entered the Carmel settlement in the south Hebron hills to protest the ongoing stone-throwing from the settlement towards the adjacent Palestinian village of Umm al-Kheir. Every night for the past two and a half weeks, settlers from Carmel have been throwing stones at the Palestinian village, disturbing the sleep and disrupting the lives of the men, women, and children there. Neither the Israeli police, the army, nor the security coordinators of the settlement have done anything to prevent the stone-throwing, despite a complaint […]

Friday, September 1 2017 Demand that the Carmel settlement take responsibility and stop the stone-throwing on Umm al-Kheir! September 1, 2017 The village of Umm al-Kheir in the south Hebron hills has been under attack by stone-throwers from the adjacent settlement of Carmel for the past four nights. With the sole aim of depriving the villagers of their sleep – every hour throughout the night, a stone is lobbed over the fence. A single stone, jerking an entire village out of sleep. Cowardly, under cover of darkness, the perpetrator runs away. In these summer nights when people sleep outside, the danger of one of the stones physically harming […]

Sunday, July 30 2017 Saturday, 29.7, in the South Hebron Hills Today at the South Hebron Hills – accompanying shepherds and construction work. We joined the shepherds of Um el Amad to their grazing lands near the settlement of Otniel, could have been really pastoral if not for the soldiers and settlers watching us all morning. In Um el Kheir we cleaned the ruins of the community center that was destroyed (again), while the houses of the colonialists of Carmel are still standing without interruption. Sunday, January 8 2017 January 7, 2017 Asael, Susya, Twaneh, Umm al-Khair text by David Shulman photo by Dood Evan 1. Asael, possibly the ugliest of all the illegal outposts in the southern West Bank—and the competition is fierce—is rapidly expanding. Yellow bulldozers, parked at the perimeter fence of the settlement, have carved out a huge swathe of intermeshed, criss-crossing gashes in the hill and valley just below. This wide, deep wound in the soil has been sliced, needless to say, through privately owned Palestinian land. We know the families. We’ve plowed here, on the edge of the outpost. There have been […]

Sunday, November 20 2016 19 November, 2016 Umm al-Khair by David Shulman: 1. It’s a rainless winter, so far, in the South Hebron hills: cold, grey, stony, dry. We spend an hour with Ahmad and his herd just after dawn, whipped by the wind. They’re from Gawawis, just over the hill. Ahmad has a seven-month-old baby at home. Like many of the shepherds we know, he also has a modern cell phone, which he delights in showing us. He wants a radio—a modest wish, I think, for someone living the excruciating life of the shepherd on these rough slopes. […]

Israeli forces demolished six homes in this small South Hebron Hills village last week. Meanwhile, new two-storied houses stand vacant in the Jewish settlement of Karmel 50 meters away, on the other side of a fence. A wave of demolitions has been washing the West Bank in 2016, hitting particularly hard in the South Hebron Hills and […]
