Syria (i/ˈsɪ.rɪə/; Arabic: سوريا or سورية, Sūriyā or Sūrīyah), officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia. De jure Syrian territory borders Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest, but the government's control now extends to approximately 30–40% of the de jure state area and less than 60% of the population.
A country of fertile plains, high mountains, and deserts, Syria is home to diverse ethnic and religious groups, including Syrian Arabs, Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians, Kurds, Circassians,Mandeans and Turks. Religious groups include Sunnis, Christians, Alawites, Druze, Mandeans, Shiites, Salafis, and Yazidis. Sunni Arabs make up the largest population group in Syria.
In English, the name "Syria" was formerly synonymous with the Levant (known in Arabic as al-Sham), while the modern state encompasses the sites of several ancient kingdoms and empires, including the Eblan civilization of the 3rd millennium BC. Its capital Damascus is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. In the Islamic era, Damascus was the seat of the Umayyad Caliphate and a provincial capital of the Mamluk Sultanate in Egypt.

The Russian military intervention in the Syrian Civil War began in September 2015 after an official request by the Syrian government for military help against rebel and jihadist groups.[85][86] The intervention initially consisted of air strikes fired by Russian aircraft stationed in the Khmeimim base at targets primarily in north-western Syria, against militant groups opposed to the Syrian government, including Syrian National Coalition, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), al-Nusra Front (al-Qaeda in the Levant) and the Army of Conquest.[87][88][89] Besides, Russian military advisors and special operations forces were stationed in Syria.[90] Prior to the intervention, Russian involvement in the Syrian Civil War had mainly consisted of supplying the Syrian Army.[91] Shortly a...

Zataari in Jordan, the largest Syrian refugee camp in the world with 80,000 people, was supposed to provide temporary housing for people when the government and United Nations opened it in 2012. But since residents have not been able to leave, they have started 3,000 businesses, including pastry shops, a pizza place, a supermarket and a gardening shop, and cities nearby have loosened employment restrictions.

Collusion between business communities and the state can lead to a measure of security for those in power, but this kind of interaction often limits new development. In Syria, state-business involvement through informal networks has contributed to an erratic economy. With unique access to private businessmen and select state officials during a critical period of transition, this book examines Syria’s political economy from 1970 to 2005 to explain the nation’s pattern of state intervention and prolonged economic stagnation. “Bassam Haddad has produced a path-breaking study of Syria’s political economy. With unequalled access to first hand sources, his work highlights the underlying political logics that have shaped Syria’s economy since the rise of the Baath Party to power half a century ag...
Liberals plan for huge influx of refugees, immigrant spouses at expense of skilled foreign workers The Liberal government has cut the number of skilled foreign workers it will allow into Canada this year to make room for a huge influx of Syrian refugees, immigrant spouses and children. Immigration Minister John McCallum says the reduction in economic immigrants is a “temporary pause” that will have minimal impact on Canada’s well-being and prosperity. But the move has nonetheless raised concerns from business groups about the Liberals’ long-term plans for immigration. At the same time, the government could face a backlash from some ethnic communities for not letting more immigrant parents and grandparents into Canada to be reunited with their families. McCallum announced the changes at...

The 1970s, pronounced "the Nineteen Seventies", was the decade that started on January 1, 1970, and ended on December 31, 1979. This was the eighth decade of the 20th century. In the Western world, social progressive values that began in the 1960s, such as increasing political awareness and political and economic liberty of women, continued to grow. The hippie culture, which started in the latter half of the 1960s, waned by the early 1970s and faded towards the middle part of the decade, which involved opposition to the Vietnam War, opposition to nuclear weapons, the advocacy of world peace, and hostility to the authority of government and big business. The environmentalist movement began to increase dramatically in this period. In the United Kingdom with the 1979 elections resulted in t...

After three years of war, the more than 4 million refugees who are displaced within Syria face a health care disaster. Save the Children estimates 60 percent of that country's hospitals have been damaged or destroyed and nearly half of its doctors have fled, among other dire statistics. Michael Klosson of Save the Children joins Jeffrey Brown to discuss the crisis.

The ongoing conflict in Syria has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people, forced millions from their homes - and now a new report shows a mental health crisis is plaguing children trapped in the country. Breakthrough of Syria's civil war and its effect on their health care system.
Drug manufacturing in Syria has halted and getting medicine from outside is extremely difficult. Available medical care gives priority to those injured in the conflict. Women and children suffering from chronic health problems or domestic injuries - including burns - are not getting care. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has responded to the need for medical care by opening three hospitals in Syria.
Access to an already stressed health-care system in Syria is deteriorating further. Although we were recently able to deliver medical supplies to certain regions, the ICRC is calling on parties to the conflict to respect medical staff and facilities. Avril Patterson, our health coordinator in Syria, describes the harsh reality Syrians are facing. Reference: AV319
Syria was the most dangerous place for health care workers to operate last year, ahead of other conflict zones like the Palestinian territories, and Yemen, the World Health Organization says.

President Barack Obama said he had not yet made his decision regarding a U.S. strike on Syria during an interview with PBS NewsHour senior correspondents Judy Woodruff and Gwen Ifill. The president said that Syrian president Bashar al-Assad's alleged use of chemical weapons would factor into his calculation and he warned that the Assad regime should be held accountable. Mr. Obama spoke to the NewsHour on the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech where he reflected on the challenges Americans still face today in the form of jobs, health care and education. In the interview, the president also vowed to take steps to ensure voting rights for all Americans.

I visited Jordan for the first time two years ago and fell in love instantly. Since then I have kept in touch with people I met there and it became very obvious to me that due to the current crisis in the Middle-East, tourism took a dramatic dip since I was last there. I wanted to do my bit to help those who were so kind to me during my last visit so I decided I wanted to go back and make a short promotional video in the hope that it might (in whatever way possible) make a difference. I only had ten days this time, too short a time to show off the vast beauty of Jordan - so I had to shorten myself to follow the 'tourist route' from Amman to Aqaba via Petra and Wadi Rum in the hope to maximize the variety of footage for the video. Though making a video in such a short time can be stressful,...

Visualising the past, rebranding the present II is set in the Old City of Damascus, a living, breathing tableau of ancient histories, where formerly resplendent merchant courtyard houses have been restored and converted into restaurants and boutique hotels. In a dusty corner of this ancient world, if we turn down an alleyway, just past the Omayyad mosque, we find a antique shop and art gallery run by Zaher, a young Syrian whose family own a string of shops in the Old City. Here, as we sip our tea and listen to a neighbouring musician play the oud, we meet some of Zaher's customers and begin to discover what draws them to this city. Among them are two young travellers from Italy, a Texan doctor searching for an encounter, a Dutch post woman clutching her Lonely Planet guide, a Sky TV camera...
In 2009 I spent 8 months filming in Amman and Damascus. This was a creative collaborative filmmaking project that aimed to collect approximately 100 interviews with different people involved in the production and consumption of cultural heritage in the region. In this short piece sound and image are de-linked causing the viewer to become aware of the connections (or lack of connections) between the two different senses of sight and hearing. The soundtrack, signing at a Syrian wedding, slowly increases in volume. Moving images are still and act as signifiers – they are literally signs - the signs that litter the tourist landscape of Amman and Damascus guiding the visitor and resident through the city streets. Using a split screen they are juxtaposed, thereby creating new meanings. The re...
This short documentary trailer, vividly depicts the long term effects of the uncontrolled tourism industry developed around the ancient City of Petra in Jordan, rising awareness of its imminent ruination, while bringing hope that measures will be taken before it is too late. The vast, lost city of Petra, ’half as old as time’, was carved into the sheer red-rose rock faces by the Nabateans, Aramaic-speaking Semites who settled there more than 3000 years ago. They turned the city into an important junction centre for the caravans carrying silk and spices from China, India and Southern Arabia to Egypt, Syria, Greece and ancient Rome. For centuries, Petra fell into the mists of legend, its existence being a guarded secret known only to the local Bedouins and Arab tradesman. Today this wond...
Syria, a nation whose civil war has raged on for almost half a decade, is in dire need of modern design solutions. Once a progressive country with infrastructure, tourism, and exports, Syria has since fallen into a state of severe civil unrest. In the wake of the recent revolutionary conflict, Aleppo, once Syria’s largest city, now lies in rubble. An estimated 9 million Syrians have fled their homes and are seeking refuge either inside the country or elsewhere in the Middle East. These displaced populations are placing great strain on transport infrastructure in the area, and humanitarian supplies are dwindling. Intense fighting between opposing forces has prevented convoys of critical humanitarian relief from reaching those in need who stayed behind. In situations like these, airdrops a...

By the evening of November 26 the forefront of the Syrian Army in the Hanano district separated only 1.5 kilometers to the government forces in Suleiman al-Halyabi. The collapse of the terrorist defense was provided by distracting attacks - from the south - on the Sheikh Said, in the city center - in Suleiman al-Halyabi, in the north-east - in the industrial zone Aueydzha. This allowed the tie up all the reserves of terrorists. At this time, in the strictest secret it was preparing a powerful blow to the Hanano district. The suddenness and power of artillery preparation before the offensive broke the will of the extremists to resist. According to radio intercepts, the enemy retreated in panic, not having prepared defense lines. http://www.anna-news.info/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC...
This episode of Newsbud's The Geopolitical Report, narrated by Kurt Nimmo investigates the scene of the historical "flashpoint" of Daraa, a town near the Syria-Jordan border. It reveals that the CIA, in conjunction with the Muslim Brotherhood, attacked police and set the stage for a conflict that has so far claimed the lives of more than 400,000 Syrians. The report then goes into the decades of behind-the-scene meddling done to Syria by the US Deep State, which has escalated into the current proxy war between US-backed terrorists against the Syrian Army and their allies, the Russians. The desired outcome for the US' Deep State is to take down Syria's secular government and to replace it with an extremist Wahhabi principality, to be controlled by the Muslim Brotherho...

And, though it started as a civil war, it's become much more than that. It's a proxy war that has divided much of the Middle East, and has drawn in both Russia and the United States. Syrian TV shows archive footage of Syrian Arab Army after US strikes against it, demonstrating the unshakable resolve of the army in fighting against all forms of aggression. A military source announced on Friday May 19th that the so-called international coalition attacked one of the Syrian army’s military points on al-Tanf road in the Syrian Badia. The attack, which took place at 16:30 pm on Thursday May 18th, left a number of people dead, in addition to causing material damage, the source said. The source described the attack as “blatant”, saying it uncovers the fake claims of the international coalition about fighting terrorism and reveals the undoubted reality of the Zionist-U.S. project in the region. “The attempt to justify this act of aggression by saying that the targeted force...

"Al Qaeda and the Global War on Terrorism" with Michel Chossudovsky. In 2003 designer Kristof Buntinx travelled to Rome where he drew the nude statues he saw in the Vatican, in the Villa Medici and in the many churches and basilicas the Italian capital boasts. He remembers that he enjoyed drawing them and he also recalls the heat wave that hit the region during his stay, as a result of which he more or less had the city to himself. He loved the contact with the cool marble tiles on which he sketched sitting in the lotus position. He recently rediscovered these drawings and singled out motifs to print on his cotton boxer shorts. For the time being, this new ‘Rome’ collection is only made-to-order. ‘Make love, not war!’: this new collection, which is the result of a collaboration with RJ Bodywear, is centred around love. Travel video about destination Palmyra in Syria. Set amid the desert savannah of Syria are the proud remains of the unique and mysterious metropolis of Palmyra. The legendary ancient city was built in this vicinity due to the existence of an oasis, Tadmur, and today around thirty thousand people live in the surrounding area. The shortest and fastest route from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia and Persia travels directly past the Tadmur Oasis thus it was only a question of time until an important trading post was founded there and later a flourishing cultural and economic centre developed. Close to the former Agora, the central square in which the city’s inhabitants held their weekly market since the first century A.D., is one of Palmyra’s architectural landmarks, the Tetrapylon. The conflict has claimed the lives of nearly half a million people. Furthermore, about half the Syrian population has been internally displaced and about five million are registered as refugees. Yet, sooner or later, the war will end and the reconstruction of Syria will start. But, even then, the fallout of the war and the geopolitical division of the country will be felt for decades to come. SPECIAL SERIESSYRIA'S CIVIL WAR The Boy Who Started the Syrian War We tell the story of Mouawiya Syasneh, the boy whose anti-Assad graffiti lit the spark that engulfed Syria. 09 Feb 2017 10:22 GMT Syria's Civil War, War & Conflict Mouawiya Syasneh was just 14 when he sprayed anti-government slogans on his school wall in Deraa, Syria. It was February 2011, and he could never have imagined that such a minor act would spark a full-blown civil war. More than half a million people have been killed in Syria since the start of the war. Mouawiya's home city has been ravaged by street fighting, shelling and barrel bombing. The war has left scars that may never heal. Now a young man, fighting on the frontline for the Free Syrian Army, Mouawiya admits that had he known what the consequences of his...

The US military confirmed it hit 'pro-regime' combatants in southern Syria at At Tanf saying they posed a threat to coalition forces there. The Department of Defense (DOD) said pro-Assad militias advanced "well beyond" the de-confliction zone and posed a "direct threat" to Pentagon-backed forces. Norwegian troops have entered Syria via Iraq's western border with Syria. The special forces will be joining US and British forces already supporting the Free Syrian Army fighting against the Syrian forces. Germany eyes a Jordanian military base to move forces to claiming Turkey obstructing access to the Incirlik airbase. No doubt a good excuse while NATO prepares to take down Damascus. links: https://www.rt.com/news/389079-germany-jordan-airbase-incirlik/ https://sputniknews.com/politics/201705201053816839-arab-nato-analysis/ https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/norwegian-army-enters-southern-syria-aid-endangered-rebels-border-crossing/ http://www.mechon-mamre.org/p/pt/pt3411.htm https://sputniknews.com/politics/201705201053816028-trump-democrats-republicans/ http://www.telesurtv.net/engl...

Following the recent events that took place in Syria, people all over the world used to see this country like it presented by media. I have been twice there and can assure you Syria is a wonderful land with its age-old traditions and unique culture. First, I came to Syria together with my friends in August 2010. That's exactly when I shot my first video about the place. Later Blake Whitman showed it on vimeo.com HD channel. The movie was warmly met and watched by a great number of people, what gave me an opportunity to take part in another project in Syria in February this year. It was a documentary about the country made in 20 days. I was DOP in a second unit. The video you see I made together with my friend from my Syrian shot here, at home. I wish people remembered Syria a great and ma...

For two weeks the installation was an initiative to promote Norway’s annual fundraising event “TV-aksjonen”. This year all donations went to the Red Cross, and people living in war and conflict. IKEA partnered with the Red Cross to promote the cause. 25 m2 of Syria is an apartment at IKEA Slependen (flagship store in Norway). But it is not one of the "picture perfect" homes that are usually on display. The apartment is built as a replica of the real home of Rana and her family of 9 in Damascus, Syria. It was important to get the public involved, and to really understand where the help was going. So the decision to build a replica of a Syrian home at IKEA was made. IKEA’s vision is ‘to create a better everyday life for the may people’. So this partnership was both natural, giving and...

After visiting Jordan last year I interviewed a Syrian Refugee who fled across the border from Syria with her two children. I asked her young children to draw pictures of their journey. This animation takes inspiration from the children's drawings and uses the voice-over of their mother Faiza to tell their story. It hopefully also highlights the shocking numbers of displaced children along with the large numbers of Syrian people who simply just ‘disappear’ under the Assad Regime. Directed and Produced by Jack Newman Animation by Alex Chilvers Sound Design and production by Steven Dove

Documentary Syria 2016: The Truth of Syria
Picturesque and in distress in .
SYRIA!
It's scarier.
Strong and broken it's true.
SYRIA!
I'm serious.
I'm looking out for -
Ghostly horizons etched in -
SYRIA!
It's scarier.
The everlasting portion of the pie-stuck-in-the-sky-and out to dry...
And the wheel goes on .
With miles and miles from my gun.
Turn it up-up, turn it!
Turn it up-up, turn it up-up, turn it!
Far fetched and flung .
With miles and miles from my gun.
Turn it up-up, turn it!
Turn it up-up, turn it up-up, turn it!
I got my own morale-a-mill.
From Syria.
Hysteria.
Oh, you ate the seed before the meal!
Stare, Slam, how dare they
YOU ate the words write out of my mouth! (Huh)
SYRIA.
The ever lasting portion of the pie-stuck-in-the-sky-hung out to dry.
And the wheel goes on .
With miles and miles from my gun.
Turn it up-up, turn it!
Turn it up-up, turn it up-up, turn it!
Star-struck and slung .
With miles and miles from my gun.
Turn it up-up, turn it!
Turn it up-up, turn it up-up, turn it!
Bright-with-the-frighten-eyeline,
At Syria!
Hysteria!
Brown-with-a-doubt-in-his-mind .
Syria.
It's scarier
But what is he in for?
Ghostly horizons etched in,
Syria
It's Scarier!
The everlasting fortune that,
Syria .
It's scarier!
Turn it
Up-up-up!
Turn it
Up-up-up!
Turn it
Up-up-up!
