The Flock deserve more than a footnote, but not the full-fleged treatment that an entry in The Anal Annals of American Progressive Rock would surely give them. They released three separate albums all of which had separate ideas behind them, and with steadily decreasing results.

Their first album focuses on classical violinist Jerry Goodman, with counter-point done by a horn section (this was a Chicago band, after all) and guitarist Fred Glickstein. Shifting between styles within songs was the key to their success, as was letting Goodman stretch out as much as possible.
The second album, Dinosaur Swamps reigned Goodman in, hampered itself by changing styles too much, and was way over-produced. But both of these albums are certainly a different form of progressive rock - sort of Chicago with Seatrain's violin.
But Goodman then left for John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra and the band fell apart in 1971. It was revived by Glickstein and the rhythm section in the mid-70s without horns, but with a token violinist and a synth-loving keyboardist.
The final Flock album was self-consciously "progressive" and laid claim to being one of the first "progressive" bands while stumbling all over themselves to imitate crappy popular "progressive" music like Styx (another Chicago band). In short, a deserved, obnoxious flop.
So really their debut (The Flock) is the only Flock album you need to own or hear.

A Flock of Seagulls
A Flock of Seagulls (also known as Flock of Seagulls) are an English new wave and synthpop band originally formed in Liverpool by brothers Michael "Mike" Score (keyboards, vocals) and Alister "Ali" James Score (drums), along with Francis Lee "Frank" Maudsley (bass) and Paul Reynolds (guitar).
The group had a string of international hit singles including "I Ran (So Far Away)" (1982), "Space Age Love Song" (1982), "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)" (1982), and "The More You Live, the More You Love" (1984). They became notable in the 1980s for their video for "I Ran (So Far Away)". The band has also won a Grammy Award.
History
Formation and success
A Flock of Seagulls was started by Mike Score and his brother Ali in 1979 in Liverpool (The name was taken from The Stranglers song "Toiler on the Sea", according to Mike Score). Mike, who was previously a hairdresser, played keyboards, guitar, and vocals and Ali played drums. Also, their friend Francis Maudsley played bass. The band's original guitarist, Willie Woo, left and was replaced with Paul Reynolds from the band Cindysbeentrippin. After practising above Score's hair salon, the band started playing clubs and eventually got a recording contract.

I Ran (So Far Away)
"I Ran (So Far Away)", also released as "I Ran", is a song by English new wave band A Flock of Seagulls. It was released in 1982 as the second single from their self-titled debut album. Since then, it has been their most successful single, reaching number nine in the United States and number one in Australia.

The Flock deserve more than a footnote, but not the full-fleged treatment that an entry in The Anal Annals of American Progressive Rock would surely give them. They released three separate albums all of which had separate ideas behind them, and with steadily decreasing results.

The final Flock album was self-consciously "progressive" and laid claim to being one of the first "progressive" bands while stumbling all over themselves to imitate crappy popular "progressive" music like Styx (another Chicago band). In short, a deserved, obnoxious flop.
So really their debut (The Flock) is the only Flock album you need to own or hear.
