Mili Plain

part of the Kura-Araks Lowland on the right bank of the Kura River, lying west of the lower reaches of the Araks River in eastern Transcaucasia, Azerbaijan SSR. The plain is a semidesert, elevated and dissected by dry gorges in the west and lying below sea level in the northeast. The climate is arid with hot summers. Annual precipitation totals 300 mm or less (in the northeast and east). The soils are gray-cinnamon, sierozem, and sierozem-meadow; in places they are saline. The region supports a semidesert vegetation (wormwood, saltwort, capers) and, in some areas, saltwort desert flora. The principal economic activities are irrigation farming (cotton and grain) and livestock raising.
