Texas
Texas /ˈtɛksəs/ (Spanish: Texas or Tejas [ˈtexas]) is a state in the United States of America. It is the second most populous and second largest state by area in the US. Geographically located in the south central part of the country, Texas shares an international border with Mexico to the south and borders the states of New Mexico to the west, Oklahoma to the north, Arkansas to the northeast, and Louisiana to the east. Texas has an area of 268,820 square miles (696,200 km2) and a growing population of over 27.5 million residents (July 2015).
Houston is the largest city in Texas and the fourth-largest in the United States, while San Antonio is the second largest in the state and seventh largest in the United States. Dallas–Fort Worth and Greater Houston are the fourth and fifth largest United States metropolitan statistical areas, respectively. Other major cities include Austin (the state capital) and El Paso. Texas is nicknamed the Lone Star State to signify Texas as a former independent republic, and as a reminder of the state's struggle for independence from Mexico. The "Lone Star" can be found on the Texan state flag and on the Texan state seal. The origin of the state name, Texas, is from the word, "Tejas", which means 'friends' in the Caddo language.

Pickle was an Eagle Scout and recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America. The center on Budget and Policy Priorities ranks California 2nd on its list of states with the most income inequality. Narrator: Texas governor Rick Perry taking a victory lap this week after Toyota announced will move its national headquarters and thousands of jobs to the Lone Star state after thirty years in California. It's a big win for the Governor who has made it his mission to lure companies away from high tax, high regulation states. California governor Jerry Brown, who is up for re-election this November, had this to say about the auto maker's move; "We have a few problems, we have lots of little burdens and regulations and taxes. But smart people figure out how to make it. And, as I always say, you get what you pay for." Wall Street editorial page writer Alicia Finley joins us with more. Well, good to know we get what we pay for. What did Toyota say about its move? Finley: Basically, they were very diplomatic about it and they said Texas has a very business friendly environment, zero income tax, affordable housing. This has nothing to do with California's anti-business environment. Narrator: But he just touted the pro business climate of Texas. So, let's just dig in a little into those costs. What is the cost burden, what are the advantages from a business point of view, of Texas versus California? Finley: First of all, it's right to work. So, it has a lower unionization rate. Narrator: It allows voluntary, you don't have to join a union? Finley: That's right. Narrator: So it reduces union labor? Finley: That's right. Lower energy prices. Narrator: Why? Finley: Why? Because they don't have all the green energy policies. Essentially, renewable mandates. Narrator: Renewable mandates are for solar, wind and other things which are higher cost. And because California imposed that on their energy industries, cost are higher in California that in Texas, is that right? Finley: That's right, about 50% higher in California. Narrator: 50% higher? Finley: And they're going up. That's the scary thing. They could go up even more. Narrator: What else? Finley: Gas prices are about seventy to eighty cents cheaper in Texas and the rest of the South. Narrator: Wow! And then you have the tax burden where the top marginal tax rate in California is what? Finley: 13.3% Narrator: And in Texas? Finley: Zero. Narrator: Zero. Then there is laughter. When the United States entered WWII, Pickle joined the Navy as a gunnery officer and was stationed on the USS St. Louis and the USS Miami, surviving three torpedo attacks. When the war ended, he, Johnson, and Connally helped found a radio station (KVET) in Austin, Texas. After 10 years in the advertising business, he joined the Democratic Election Executive Committee of Texas in 1957. From 1961 to 1963, Pickle was a member of the Texas Employment Commission, since renamed the Texas Workforce Commission. He served under appointment of Governor Price Daniel. Pickle was elected as a Democrat to the 88th Congress, by special election, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of United States Representative Homer Thornberry, who became a U.S. District judge. Pickle was reelected 15 times before retiring at the conclusion of his 1993-94 term. His campaign trademark was a "squeaky pickle" rubber toy he handed out to those he met in area parades. While in the House, Pickle rose through the ranks to become the third ranking Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee. He was one of only six Southern Congressmen to vote for the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and went on to play a key role in passing major Social Security reform legislation in 1983 to save the system from insolvency. The reforms increased the payroll tax rate, slowly increased the full benefit retirement age to 67 and taxed some of the benefits. He considered this legislation his greatest accomplishment. Pickle was able to steer research money to the University of Texas, and today the University's J. J. Pickle Research Campus is named in his honor. He was influential in the city of Austin, as well, most notably for relocating Austin's main airport from Robert Mueller Municipal Airport to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. He was also instrumental in bringing the SEMATECH and the MCC consortia to Austin. Before Pickle left for World War II in 1942, he married Ella Nora "Sugar" Critz. They had one daughter together. Critz died in 1952 and Pickle married Beryl Bolton McCarroll in 1960. Pickle was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1991 and lymphoma in 2001. He died at his home in Austin on June 18, 2005 of complications from his cancer and is interred at the Texas State Cemetery there. Peggy Pickle was Jake Pickle's only daughter. "The emphasis on patient safety and quality; the teamwork that we provide for any type of patient, whether she be high risk, low risk, high risk baby, normal newborn, I feel that myself and my staff come to work every day to do the best that we can do to give high quality care to our patients." When you arrive, you may choose to use valet parking, or self-park. Enter the facility through the main hospital entrance and continue down the corridor toward the Bloxom Tower. Maternal Observation is located on the first floor of the Bloxom Tower. "It's not uncommon for moms to make several trips to the maternal observation unit, especially first time moms, not knowing what to expect, not clearly knowing what changes are going on in the body," says Becky Law, the hospital's Manager of Lactation & Childbirth Education. "Once it's determined that she's in true labor, she will be transferred to the labor and delivery suites and then she will have one-on-one care with the nurse there." The Labor and Delivery suites have been designed to keep you comfortable. The room is equipped with all the clinical tools necessary for your delivery. And you'll find a nursing staff that understands your needs. "We have the high-risk doctors who are specially trained in caring for the high risk moms," says Hailey, "and they bring in the maternal transfers which gives the nurses even more experience in caring for the high risk which increases their skills." "To add to that we have the neonatal specialists," she says, "the neonatologists that do the same for the babies, so they're here 24-7 and the patients have that security to know that if they deliver in the middle of the night or on the weekend, that those high-risk doctors are here to take care of their baby should it need to go to the neonatal ICU." Texas Health Fort Worth offers family-centered maternity care with a commitment to providing a personalized experience for the birth of your child. "Our mid-wife group has introduced water births and they have been sought out from all over Dallas and Fort Worth for moms that are desiring that type of birth so they are coming to the mid-wives to deliver here," Hailey says. "I've had a great experience with my daughter who's 8," says maternity patient Lacey O'Neal. "And we had a good pregnancy and a good delivery here, and now that we're having the twins this is where the doctor that I chose, this is where he delivers, and I also like that they have a great NICU if we need that for having a multiple birth and also that it's connected to Cooks so we have all the resources we need." After your delivery, you will be moved into a private postpartum room. Texas Health Fort Worth encourages "rooming in," a best-practice where both you and baby room together.
