Lead Belly (1888-1949) - "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" trad. (1941)
Huddie William Ledbetter, better known as “Lead Belly,” was born on the Louisiana-Texas border in 1888 but his parents moved the family to Bowie County, Texas when young Huddie was only five years old. His first instrument was a button accordion given to him by his Uncle Terrell. He also learned to play the piano, violin, harmonica, and mandolin, but it was his playing of the 12 string guitar for which he became famous.
Lead Belly gained early experience playing for ‘sukey jumps,’ informal gatherings of African- Americans held away from white areas, which originated during slavery but continued after emancipation and into the Jim Crow era. After leaving home in 1903 he worked in the cotton fields between Dallas and Shreveport during the week and on the weekend played for dances and house parties.
In 1913 Lead Belly spent eight months playing with the Father of Texas Blues Blind Lemon Jefferson. During this time he came into contact with Mexican-American norteño border musicians, some of whom played the 12 string guitar. Lead Belly was impressed with the brash, clangy sound of this instrument and he got one and quickly created one of the most distinctive and emulated styles of blues guitar playing.
Lead Belly’s troubles with the law began in 1915 when he was jailed for assault and sentenced to work on a chain gang in Harrison County, Texas. He escaped and lived under a pseudonym in DeKalb County. Off and on for most of the next 19 years he was in jail. In 1925 after serving the minimum of 7 years on a 35 year sentence for murder, he was pardoned by Texas governor Pat Neff who heard him performing at Sugarland Prison near Houston. Lead Belly addressed a song to the governor appealing to be released and Neff agreed, which is a testament to Lead Belly’s abilities as a performer.
In 1930 Lead Belly was serving a sentence for attempted murder in Louisiana’s Angola Prison stemming from a racially-charged incident in which he stabbed a white man. Three years into that prison term he was discovered by folklorist and song collector John Lomax and his son Alan, who recorded him for the Library of Congress. The Lomaxes helped Lead Belly get a
recording petitioning for his release to Louisiana’s governor Allen, again after having served the minimum portion of his sentence. On the other side of that record was Lead Belly’s classic song “Goodnight Irene.” Although Gov. Allen denied that Lead Belly’s singing had anything to do with his release, Lead Belly and the Lomaxes continued to believe that it was the deciding factor.
The terms of this release required that he be employed, so Lead Belly wrote to John Lomax and asked to be hired on as his driver. Lomax agreed and Lead Belly spent several months assisting the folklorist on his song collecting trips in the South, after which he accompanied Lomax on many of his speaking engagements at colleges and universities.
Lead Belly relocated to New York, where he made important contacts in the folk music circuit, made personal appearances, and began recording for commercial release. In 1949 while on tour in Europe Lead Belly fell ill with ALS and returned to the United States. His final concert was given at the University of Texas in Austin in honor of his mentor John Lomax, who had died the previous year. Lead Belly passed away in December of 1949.
Lead Belly’s song repertoire was enormous—estimates range as high as 500 songs or more— and he recorded over 200 songs during his career, comprising one of the most important bodies of music collected in the 20th century. His songs spanned the range of American folk idioms: Blues, ballads, cowboy songs, children’s songs, prison and work songs, sea chanteys, and dance music. He also wrote topical songs covering racism, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Adolf Hitler, Howard Hughes, the Scottsboro Boys, and Jean Harlow.
Lead Belly’s songs have been covered by hundreds of artists as diverse Brian Wilson, Lonnie Donegan, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Pete Seeger, Frank Sinatra, Led Zeppelin, Tom Waits, Ernest Tubb, Meatloaf, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash, and Nirvana. Lead Belly was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

"In the Pines", also known as "Black Girl" and "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?", is a traditional American folk song which dates back to at least the 1870s, and is believed to be Southern Appalachian in origin. The identity of the song's author is unknown, but it has been recorded by dozens of artists in numerous genres. A 1993 acoustic version by grunge act Nirvana introduced the song to many people at the end of the twentieth century. Kurt Cobain attributed authorship to Lead Belly, who had recorded the song several times, beginning in 1944, but the version performed by Lead Belly and covered by Nirvana does not differ substantially from other variants of the song. Most versions of this song are performed in 3/4 time.

Texas /ˈtɛksəs/ (Spanish: Texas or Tejas [ˈtexas]) is a state in the United States of America. It is the second most populous and second largest state by area in the US. Texas is nicknamed the Lone Star State to signify Texas as a former independent republic, and as a reminder of the state's struggle for independence from Mexico. The "Lone Star" can be found on the Texan state flag and on the Texan state seal. The origin of the state name, Texas, is from the word, "Tejas", which means 'friends' in the Caddo language.

The identity of the song's author is unknown, but it has been recorded by dozens of artists in numerous genres. A 1993 acoustic version by grunge act Nirvana introduced the song to many people at the end of the twentieth century. He also learned to play the piano, violin, harmonica, and mandolin, but it was his playing of the 12 string guitar for which he became famous.
Lead Belly gained early experience playing for ‘sukey jumps,’ informal gatherings of African- Americans held away from white areas, which originated during slavery but continued after emancipation and into the Jim Crow era. After leaving home in 1903 he worked in the cotton fields between Dallas and Shreveport during the week and on the weekend played for dances and house parties.
In 1913 Lead Belly spent eight months playing with the Father of Texas Blues Blind Lemon Jefferson. During this time he came into contact with Mexican-American norteño border musicians, some of whom played the 12 string guitar. Lead Belly was impressed with the brash, clangy sound of this instrument and he got one and quickly created one of the most distinctive and emulated styles of blues guitar playing.
Lead Belly’s troubles with the law began in 1915 when he was jailed for assault and sentenced to work on a chain gang in Harrison County, Texas. He escaped and lived under a pseudonym in DeKalb County. Off and on for most of the next 19 years he was in jail. In 1925 after serving the minimum of 7 years on a 35 year sentence for murder, he was pardoned by Texas governor Pat Neff who heard him performing at Sugarland Prison near Houston. Lead Belly addressed a song to the governor appealing to be released and Neff agreed, which is a testament to Lead Belly’s abilities as a performer.
In 1930 Lead Belly was serving a sentence for attempted murder in Louisiana’s Angola Prison stemming from a racially-charged incident in which he stabbed a white man. Three years into that prison term he was discovered by folklorist and song collector John Lomax and his son Alan, who recorded him for the Library of Congress. The Lomaxes helped Lead Belly get a
recording petitioning for his release to Louisiana’s governor Allen, again after having served the minimum portion of his sentence. On the other side of that record was Lead Belly’s classic song “Goodnight Irene.” Although Gov. Allen denied that Lead Belly’s singing had anything to do with his release, Lead Belly and the Lomaxes continued to believe that it was the deciding factor.
The terms of this release required that he be employed, so Lead Belly wrote to John Lomax and asked to be hired on as his driver. Lomax agreed and Lead Belly spent several months assisting the folklorist on his song collecting trips in the South, after which he accompanied Lomax on many of his speaking engagements at colleges and universities.
Lead Belly relocated to New York, where he made important contacts in the folk music circuit, made personal appearances, and began recording for commercial release. In 1949 while on tour in Europe Lead Belly fell ill with ALS and returned to the United States. His final concert was given at the University of Texas in Austin in honor of his mentor John Lomax, who had died the previous year. Lead Belly passed away in December of 1949.
Lead Belly’s song repertoire was enormous—estimates range as high as 500 songs or more— and he recorded over 200 songs during his career, comprising one of the most important bodies of music collected in the 20th century. His songs spanned the range of American folk idioms: Blues, ballads, cowboy songs, children’s songs, prison and work songs, sea chanteys, and dance music. He also wrote topical songs covering racism, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Adolf Hitler, Howard Hughes, the Scottsboro Boys, and Jean Harlow.
Lead Belly’s songs have been covered by hundreds of artists as diverse Brian Wilson, Lonnie Donegan, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Pete Seeger, Frank Sinatra, Led Zeppelin, Tom Waits, Ernest Tubb, Meatloaf, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash, and Nirvana. Lead Belly was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

◢ Using a complex pattern of binaural beat and isochronic tone frequencies dedicated to help you achieve good sleep and have lucid dreams, this 8-hour music track is divided into four unique sections. In the first 2 hours we've used frequencies that range from 3-13Hz (Alpha-Theta range) to help calm your mind and feel deeply relaxed. There is a pleasurable feeling of floating and it will give effects such as stress reduction, relaxed awareness, release of serotonin, and an induction to sleep spindles as your mind and body allows itself into sleep. It also contains triggers for creativity and imagery and access to subconscious images as you doze off.
The second and third sections contain more of the Theta waves, which are also present in dreaming, sleep, deep meditation and creative inspiration. As you have already fallen asleep, the binaural beats tap into your subconsciousness as your mind prepares itself into a lucid dream state. The music is more steady so as not to interrupt your sleep.
The fourth and last section returns itself to the Alpha range with a mix of Theta and Delta. This is where deep sleep occurs and more often than not, the dream state. There is a decreased awareness of the physical world. This section also contains the Earth Resonance or Schumann Resonance, which will leave you feeling revitalized upon waking up.
In order to achieve Lucid Dreaming, please research on different tips found on the web. Lucid Dreaming doesn't happen all at once, so patience is an important factor.

wn.com/Lucid Dreaming Sleep Track (8 Hour Sleep Cycle Track) With Binaural Beats And Isochronic Tones
◢ Using a complex pattern of binaural beat and isochronic tone frequencies dedicated to help you achieve good sleep and have lucid dreams, this 8-hour music track is divided into four unique sections. In the first 2 hours we've used frequencies that range from 3-13Hz (Alpha-Theta range) to help calm your mind and feel deeply relaxed. There is a pleasurable feeling of floating and it will give effects such as stress reduction, relaxed awareness, release of serotonin, and an induction to sleep spindles as your mind and body allows itself into sleep. It also contains triggers for creativity and imagery and access to subconscious images as you doze off.
The second and third sections contain more of the Theta waves, which are also present in dreaming, sleep, deep meditation and creative inspiration. As you have already fallen asleep, the binaural beats tap into your subconsciousness as your mind prepares itself into a lucid dream state. The music is more steady so as not to interrupt your sleep.
The fourth and last section returns itself to the Alpha range with a mix of Theta and Delta. This is where deep sleep occurs and more often than not, the dream state. There is a decreased awareness of the physical world. This section also contains the Earth Resonance or Schumann Resonance, which will leave you feeling revitalized upon waking up.
In order to achieve Lucid Dreaming, please research on different tips found on the web. Lucid Dreaming doesn't happen all at once, so patience is an important factor.
