Hatha yoga

Hatha yoga covers a broad range of yoga disciplines.

Each of the physical yoga styles we practise commonly today (ashtanga, vinyasa flow, Bikram yoga) have derived from hatha yoga.

The practice of hatha yoga dates back to 15th century in India. Derived from Sanskrit, "ha" means sun and "tha" means moon, and combined the word translates to “intense” or “vigorous” – however the hatha style practised today is more relaxed.

The focus of hatha yoga is on balancing energy through poses (asanas), gestures (mudras), body locks (bhandas) and breath (pranayama). It creates awareness of subtle energies and the play of dynamic opposites. Each pose is linked to the breath and, these days, classes often involve gentle, slow-paced sequences.

Benefits range from developing inner strength to improved flexibility and a calm mind. Attend a hatha yoga class for a good introduction to yoga – most classes offer a gentle, restorative practice that will help combat anxiety or depression.

Is hatha yoga for you?

If you’re looking for a class that is gentle, calming and meditative, attend a hatha, yin or restorative yoga class. A good hatha yoga teacher will encourage you to listen to your body, ease your way into poses and rest when needs be.

Where to do yoga?

Yoga classes are offered at gyms, health clubs, yoga studios, ashrams and wellbeing retreats across the country. Once you attend regularly, purchase a yoga mat and continue your practice at home.
