Number 10. Honda's Asimo. The humanoid robot stands a bit over 4-feet and weighs in at 119 pounds, but its developers have packed a whole lot of functionality into its modest frame. Asimo can do sign language, play soccer, and even serve drinks.
Number 9. Kuratas. If you've ever dreamed of being the pilot of a great big robot, this is your chance. Located within its 13-foot tall frame is enough room for an onboard commander. Oh by the way, it can be controlled with an iPhone.
Number 8. Atlas. Commissioned by the Pentagon, and engineered by Boston Dynamics, this disaster rescue dynamo is built to perform the heroic task of saving lives without risking its own.
Number 7. Termite Robots. These little guys are designed to do tough, tedious building work and their way of working was inspired by termites. The bots assess their environment, take cues from one another, and get to work even though they haven't a clue of the bigger plan.
Number 6. Cheetah Cub. Wanting to know how to make robots take control of tough terrain with the grace of a feline, scientists at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology made a robotic cat. Using it, they can assess joint force and agility without having to harm an actual animal.
Number 5. WildCat. Not to be confused with the aforementioned Cheetah Cub, the WildCat is the newest generation of Boston Dynamics Cheetah robot line. These machines are made for speed, traveling up to 29 miles per hour. While previous versions were indoor sorts, this one is suited to run free.
Number 4. VGo Virtual Student. Stuck at home with a severe immune disorder, a student in Texas is now able to attend classes thanks to a robot. She can power the virtual version of herself via internet and participate in what's going on thanks to a webcam.
"Miranda suffers from a weak immune system that doesn't allow her to attend class in person but thanks to this robot pilot program she's back in the classroom."
Number 3. Robo-Fly. It's tiny and fast, weighing only 80 milligrams and flapping it's wings up to 120 times per second. Once technology advances and can make it a battery small enough, the robotic insect is predicted to be a helpful tool in search and rescue missions.
Number 2. The Mab. It flies around your house, senses where it's dirty, and then deploys a bunch of tiny little cleaning bots to make the area sparkle. It's just a concept, but was enough of one to win the Electrolux Design Lab competition.
Number 1. Curiosity. NASA's Mars rover has accomplished far more than any other robot can imagine so to speak. It's only been on the Red Planet for about a year and a half, but has already determined that there could have once been life there.

Don’t look now, but the scary, dystopian themes of a futuristic robot takeover might be slowly playing out in front of our very eyes. As we grow increasingly reliant upon technology, automation and even robotics have taken on a more significant and present role in our everyday lives. Our phones recognize our voices and talk back to us, our cars can remember trips that we’ve previously taken and our computers customize information to better suit our needs. Automation has taken over for human employment in so many ways, as we order lunch from a touch screen, buy groceries at a self-checkout machine and do our banking at an ATM or online.
Robotic technology in the workforce isn’t simply here to stay, but boasts a growing presence. Observers at the forefront of technological development have predicted that humans will end up using robots for a wider variety of tasks that will only grow in complexity as their capabilities continue to advance and their skill set expands to even include responsibilities that demand creativity and recognizing human emotions. If you’re thinking about robots in a Hollywood cinematic sense, think of this new reality as less of a Terminator-style doom and gloom scenario and more of a WALL-E type of gentle, opportunistic takeover.
According to a 2015 report by the Bank of England, robotic machines are poised to take over 80 million American jobs and 15 million British jobs over the course of the next 10 to 20 years. That would represent 50% of the workforce in each of the two countries. Through this scenario, the Bank believes that administrative, clerical and production workers will be the first roles to be wiped out by the rise of automation as humans adapt their skills to fulfill duties that can’t yet be handled by robots. While the Industrial Revolution forced manual laborers to improve their skills to take on more sophisticated, complex jobs, this new era of mechanized development would see the robots use their advanced programming to just replace their human counterparts.
While the report may seem dramatic and shocking, particularly given its two decade or less timetable, it becomes less so when you realize that we are already well into the predicted rise of the machine. In various sectors of employment, jobs are already being done effectively and efficiently by mechanisms possessing artificial intelligence. From multi-billion dollar corporations like Amazon to technology companies like iRobot to even the United Stated military, robotic technology is being looked to as an increasingly viable, cost-effective means of skilled labor as opposed to using a human workforce.
It’s an amazing time that we currently live in, even if we don’t quite realize it yet. Over the past decade or two, technology has evolved at such a remarkable rate that we have come to expect regular new innovations and technological developments to hit the market in rapid succession. Now, we hardly bat an eye if confronted by, say, a prescription-filling robot pharmacist or even a Jeopardy-playing IBM computer named Watson. This might well already be a robot’s world, and we’re just living in it.

A new version of Atlas, designed to operate outdoors and inside buildings. It is electrically powered and hydraulically actuated. It uses sensors in its body and legs to balance and LIDAR and stereo sensors in its head to avoid obstacles, assess the terrain and help with navigation. This version of Atlas is about 5' 9" tall (about a head shorter than the DRC Atlas) and weighs 180 lbs.

If there’s one place on Earth you can already get a glimpse of our robot-assisted future, it’s Japan. Routinely at the forefront of robotics research, the country has brought us some of the weirdest automatons, most lifelike androids, and cutest helper-bots.
Nowhere is this more evident than at Nagasaki’s Henn-na Hotel, a hotel run by robots that opened this year. Walk into reception and a mechanised dinosaur will guide you through check-in; go to your room and a luggage bot will wheel your suitcase along beside you; get ready for bed and your own robot companion will turn out the lights.
Henn-na Hotel CEO Hideo Sawada sells his offering as part of a utopian vision where robots take over manual labour so humans can turn their attention to more creative pursuits. Replacing staff with robots might reduce labour costs, but their appeal to visitors needs to last beyond novelty value.
Motherboard host Ben Ferguson checks into the robot hotel in the first episode of our new travel series Voyager, made possible by travel tool KAYAK (http://www.kayak.co.uk/). The robot workers he meets are courteous and communicative, but can they emulate the human warmth of their flesh-and-blood counterparts? Could robots really be our future holiday companions, or do man and machine ultimately get lost in translation?

5 Amazing Robots - The Shape of Things to Come - Atlas, Spot, Cheetah, Pepper, ASIMO
Atlas humanoid robot

Meet Atlas, a humanoid robot developed by the American robotics company Boston Dynamics which now owned by Google.
It was developed with funding and oversight from the United States - Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency or (DARPA)
Altas stands 1.8m or 6 foot tall, weighs 150Kg and is designed for a variety of search and rescue tasks.
Atlas is based on Boston Dynamics' earlier PETMAN humanoid robot.
It has four hydraulically-actuated limbs and is constructed of aluminum and titanium and is illuminated with blue LEDs.
Atlas is equipped with two vision systems, a laser rangefinder and stereo cameras, both controlled by an on board computer.
It can not only walk across rough terrain, it reacts to slipping and retain it balance much like human can.
It has hands with fine motor skill capabilities and its limbs possess a total of 28 degrees of freedom.
It Can do advanced tasks like finding and picking up objects and if they are dropped it will try again and again until it completes the task.
Atlas can also react to external forces like being pushed or kicked and can get up if it falls over.
It can also do things like finding and opening doors, climbing ladders, clearing debris, locating valves, the sort of tasks human rescue works would need to do.

Spot is the latest electrically-powered, hydraulically-actuated, four-legged robot to come from Boston Dynamics
Designed for indoor and out door operation it can a good kicking from it’s makers, though really that just a good test to show its stability and ability to react to external forces.
At 1 meter tall and weighing 72kg, Spot is smaller than it previous versions like Bigdog and is all electric and much quieter without the petrol engine that the bigger robots like the LS3 have.
It uses a form or scanning LIDAR for it navigation and it’s backwards facing legs like that of a goat give to great agility.
It can negotiate rough ground, climb hills and stairs and can hop about like a real animal but it still remotely controlled at the moment
As for what purpose it would have is unclear but it could be a robot scout in military situation or autonomous guard dog but equally could be a mechanical pet. We'll have to wait until Boston Dynamics releases more information.
MIT cheetah robot

The Cheetah robot built by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is the first four legged robot to be able to not only autonomous jump over obstacles in its way but also run at up 28mph which is slightly faster than Usain Bolt.
Using its on board LIDAR visual system which uses Lasers to map the terrain in front of the robot, it can see where it is going and obstacles in its way.
The team at MIT developed a three-part algorithm to plan out the robot’s path, based on LIDAR data.
Both the vision and path-planning system are on board the robot, giving it complete autonomous control.
This works out the height of the objects and the distance from itself and the speed the robot is traveling at, then it works out the best place to jump and clear the object.
In experiments on a treadmill and an indoor track, the cheetah robot successfully cleared obstacles up to 18 inches tall — more than half of the robot’s own height — while maintaining an average running speed of 5 miles per hour.
Testing the robot in an open area actually worked better that on the treadmill because it has more time to react with it clearing 90% of the obstacles compared to 70% on the more limited area of the treadmill.
Honda ASIMO
Probably the most well know Robot is the Japanese Honda ASIMO and while it may now act very realistically its being a long time in the making.
In 1986 Honda undertook a challenge that seemed straight out of science fiction, to build a humanoid robot that might one day help people, move with them and improve their lives.
Making this dream a reality took decades and tested the skill of the world's most capable engineers.
Their first hurdle was to build a machine that could walk on two legs, a process that we humans take for granted and Honda thoroughly researched.........

A robot is a mechanical or virtual intelligent agent that can perform tasks automatically or with guidance, typically by remote control. In practice a robot is usually an electro-mechanical machine that is guided by computer and electronic programming. Robots can be autonomous, semi-autonomous or remotely controlled. Robots range from humanoids such as ASIMO and TOPIO to Nano robots, Swarm robots, Industrial robots, military robots, mobile and servicing robots. By mimicking a lifelike appearance or automating movements, a robot may convey a sense that it has intent or agency of its own. The branch of technology that deals with robots is robotics.
When societies first began developing, nearly all production and effort was the result of human labour, as well as with the aid of semi- and fully domesticated animals. As mechanical means of performing functions were discovered, and mechanics and complex mechanisms were developed, many tasks began to require less for human labour. Machinery was initially used for repetitive functions, such as lifting water and grinding grain. With technological advances more complex machines were slowly developed, such as those invented by Hero of Alexandria (in Egypt) in the 1st century AD, and the first half of the second millennium AD, such as the Automata of Al-Jazari in the 12th century AD (in medieval Iraq). They were not widely adopted as human labour, particularly slave labour, was still inexpensive compared to the capital-intensive machines.

Observers at the forefront of technological development have predicted that humans will end up using robots for a wider variety of tasks that will only grow in complexity as their capabilities continue to advance and their skill set expands to even include responsibilities that demand creativity and recognizing human emotions. If you’re thinking about robots in a Hollywood cinematic sense, think of this new reality as less of a Terminator-style doom and gloom scenario and more of a WALL-E type of gentle, opportunistic takeover. According to a 2015 report by the Bank of England, robotic machines are poised to take over 80 million American jobs and 15 million British jobs over the course of the next 10 to 20 years. That would represent 50% of the workforce in each of the two countries. Through this scenario, the Bank believes that administrative, clerical and production workers will be the first roles to be wiped out by the rise of automation as humans adapt their skills to fulfill duties that can’t yet be handled by robots. While the Industrial Revolution forced manual laborers to improve their skills to take on more sophisticated, complex jobs, this new era of mechanized development would see the robots use their advanced programming to just replace their human counterparts. While the report may seem dramatic and shocking, particularly given its two decade or less timetable, it becomes less so when you realize that we are already well into the predicted rise of the machine. In various sectors of employment, jobs are already being done effectively and efficiently by mechanisms possessing artificial intelligence. From multi-billion dollar corporations like Amazon to technology companies like iRobot to even the United Stated military, robotic technology is being looked to as an increasingly viable, cost-effective means of skilled labor as opposed to using a human workforce. It’s an amazing time that we currently live in, even if we don’t quite realize it yet. Over the past decade or two, technology has evolved at such a remarkable rate that we have come to expect regular new innovations and technological developments to hit the market in rapid succession. Now, we hardly bat an eye if confronted by, say, a prescription-filling robot pharmacist or even a Jeopardy-playing IBM computer named Watson. This might well already be a robot’s world, and we’re just living in it. If there’s one place on Earth you can already get a glimpse of our robot-assisted future, it’s Japan. Routinely at the forefront of robotics research, the country has brought us some of the weirdest automatons, most lifelike androids, and cutest helper-bots. Nowhere is this more evident than at Nagasaki’s Henn-na Hotel, a hotel run by robots that opened this year. Walk into reception and a mechanised dinosaur will guide you through check-in; go to your room and a luggage bot will wheel your suitcase along beside you; get ready for bed and your own robot companion will turn out the lights. Henn-na Hotel CEO Hideo Sawada sells his offering as part of a utopian vision where robots take over manual labour so humans can turn their attention to more creative pursuits. Replacing staff with robots might reduce labour costs, but their appeal to visitors needs to last beyond novelty value. 5 Amazing Robots - The Shape of Things to Come - Atlas, Spot, Cheetah, Pepper, ASIMO Atlas humanoid robot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVlhMGQgDkY Meet Atlas, a humanoid robot developed by the American robotics company Boston Dynamics which now owned by Google. It was developed with funding and oversight from the United States - Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency or (DARPA) Altas stands 1.8m or 6 foot tall, weighs 150Kg and is designed for a variety of search and rescue tasks. Atlas is based on Boston Dynamics' earlier PETMAN humanoid robot. It has four hydraulically-actuated limbs and is constructed of aluminum and titanium and is illuminated with blue LEDs. Atlas is equipped with two vision systems, a laser rangefinder and stereo cameras, both controlled by an on board computer. It can not only walk across rough terrain, it reacts to slipping and retain it balance much like human can. It has hands with fine motor skill capabilities and its limbs possess a total of 28 degrees of freedom. It Can do advanced tasks like finding and picking up objects and if they are dropped it will try again and again until it completes the task. Atlas can also react to external forces like being pushed or kicked and can get up if it falls over. It can also do things like finding and opening doors, climbing ladders, clearing debris, locating valves, the sort of tasks human rescue works would need to do. Pepper Robot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqlyxg1-gE0 Boston Dynamics Spot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8YjvHYbZ9w Spot is the latest electrically-powered, hydraulically-actuated, four-legged robot to come from Boston Dynamics Designed for indoor and out door operation it can a good kicking from it’s makers, though really that just a good test to show its stability and ability to react to external forces. At 1 meter tall and weighing 72kg, Spot is smaller than it previous versions like Bigdog and is all electric and much quieter without the petrol engine that the bigger robots like the LS3 have. It uses a form or scanning LIDAR for it navigation and it’s backwards facing legs like that of a goat give to great agility. It can negotiate rough ground, climb hills and stairs and can hop about like a real animal but it still remotely controlled at the moment As for what purpose it would have is unclear but it could be a robot scout in military situation or autonomous guard dog but equally could be a mechanical pet. We'll have to wait until Boston Dynamics releases more information. MIT cheetah robot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_luhn7TLfWU The Cheetah robot built by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is the first four legged robot to be able to not only autonomous jump over obstacles in its way but also run at up 28mph which is slightly faster than Usain Bolt. Using its on board LIDAR visual system which uses Lasers to map the terrain in front of the robot, it can see where it is going and obstacles in its way. The team at MIT developed a three-part algorithm to plan out the robot’s path, based on LIDAR data. Both the vision and path-planning system are on board the robot, giving it complete autonomous control. This works out the height of the objects and the distance from itself and the speed the robot is traveling at, then it works out the best place to jump and clear the object. In experiments on a treadmill and an indoor track, the cheetah robot successfully cleared obstacles up to 18 inches tall — more than half of the robot’s own height — while maintaining an average running speed of 5 miles per hour. Testing the robot in an open area actually worked better that on the treadmill because it has more time to react with it clearing 90% of the obstacles compared to 70% on the more limited area of the treadmill. Honda ASIMO Probably the most well know Robot is the Japanese Honda ASIMO and while it may now act very realistically its being a long time in the making. In 1986 Honda undertook a challenge that seemed straight out of science fiction, to build a humanoid robot that might one day help people, move with them and improve their lives. Making this dream a reality took decades and tested the skill of the world's most capable engineers. Their first hurdle was to build a machine that could walk on two legs, a process that we humans take for granted and Honda thoroughly researched......... Number 8. Atlas. Commissioned by the Pentagon, and engineered by Boston Dynamics, this disaster rescue dynamo is built to perform the heroic task of saving lives without risking its own.
Number 7. Termite Robots. These little guys are designed to do tough, tedious building work and their way of working was inspired by termites. The bots assess their environment, take cues from one another, and get to work even though they haven't a clue of the bigger plan.
Number 6. Cheetah Cub. Wanting to know how to make robots take control of tough terrain with the grace of a feline, scientists at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology made a robotic cat. Using it, they can assess joint force and agility without having to harm an actual animal.
Number 5. WildCat. Not to be confused with the aforementioned Cheetah Cub, the WildCat is the newest generation of Boston Dynamics Cheetah robot line. These machines are made for speed, traveling up to 29 miles per hour. While previous versions were indoor sorts, this one is suited to run free.
Number 4. VGo Virtual Student. Stuck at home with a severe immune disorder, a student in Texas is now able to attend classes thanks to a robot. She can power the virtual version of herself via internet and participate in what's going on thanks to a webcam.
"Miranda suffers from a weak immune system that doesn't allow her to attend class in person but thanks to this robot pilot program she's back in the classroom."
Number 3. Robo-Fly. It's tiny and fast, weighing only 80 milligrams and flapping it's wings up to 120 times per second. Once technology advances and can make it a battery small enough, the robotic insect is predicted to be a helpful tool in search and rescue missions.
Number 2. The Mab. It flies around your house, senses where it's dirty, and then deploys a bunch of tiny little cleaning bots to make the area sparkle. It's just a concept, but was enough of one to win the Electrolux Design Lab competition.

Automation has taken over for human employment in so many ways, as we order lunch from a touch screen, buy groceries at a self-checkout machine and do our banking at an ATM or online.
Robotic technology in the workforce isn’t simply here to stay, but boasts a growing presence. Observers at the forefront of technological development have predicted that humans will end up using robots for a wider variety of tasks that will only grow in complexity as their capabilities continue to advance and their skill set expands to even include responsibilities that demand creativity and recognizing human emotions. If you’re thinking about robots in a Hollywood cinematic sense, think of this new reality as less of a Terminator-style doom and gloom scenario and more of a WALL-E type of gentle, opportunistic takeover.
According to a 2015 report by the Bank of England, robotic machines are poised to take over 80 million American jobs and 15 million British jobs over the course of the next 10 to 20 years. That would represent 50% of the workforce in each of the two countries. Through this scenario, the Bank believes that administrative, clerical and production workers will be the first roles to be wiped out by the rise of automation as humans adapt their skills to fulfill duties that can’t yet be handled by robots. While the Industrial Revolution forced manual laborers to improve their skills to take on more sophisticated, complex jobs, this new era of mechanized development would see the robots use their advanced programming to just replace their human counterparts.
While the report may seem dramatic and shocking, particularly given its two decade or less timetable, it becomes less so when you realize that we are already well into the predicted rise of the machine. In various sectors of employment, jobs are already being done effectively and efficiently by mechanisms possessing artificial intelligence. From multi-billion dollar corporations like Amazon to technology companies like iRobot to even the United Stated military, robotic technology is being looked to as an increasingly viable, cost-effective means of skilled labor as opposed to using a human workforce.
It’s an amazing time that we currently live in, even if we don’t quite realize it yet. Over the past decade or two, technology has evolved at such a remarkable rate that we have come to expect regular new innovations and technological developments to hit the market in rapid succession. Don’t look now, but the scary, dystopian themes of a futuristic robot takeover might be slowly playing out in front of our very eyes. As we grow increasingly reliant upon technology, automation and even robotics have taken on a more significant and present role in our everyday lives. Our phones recognize our voices and talk back to us, our cars can remember trips that we’ve previously taken and our computers customize information to better suit our needs. Automation has taken over for human employment in so many ways, as we order lunch from a touch screen, buy groceries at a self-checkout machine and do our banking at an ATM or online.
Robotic technology in the workforce isn’t simply here to stay, but boasts a growing presence. Observers at the forefront of technological development have predicted that humans will end up using robots for a wider variety of tasks that will only grow in complexity as their capabilities continue to advance and their skill set expands to even include responsibilities that demand creativity and recognizing human emotions. If you’re thinking about robots in a Hollywood cinematic sense, think of this new reality as less of a Terminator-style doom and gloom scenario and more of a WALL-E type of gentle, opportunistic takeover.
According to a 2015 report by the Bank of England, robotic machines are poised to take over 80 million American jobs and 15 million British jobs over the course of the next 10 to 20 years. That would represent 50% of the workforce in each of the two countries. Through this scenario, the Bank believes that administrative, clerical and production workers will be the first roles to be wiped out by the rise of automation as humans adapt their skills to fulfill duties that can’t yet be handled by robots. While the Industrial Revolution forced manual laborers to improve their skills to take on more sophisticated, complex jobs, this new era of mechanized development would see the robots use their advanced programming to just replace their human counterparts.
While the report may seem dramatic and shocking, particularly given its two decade or less timetable, it becomes less so when you realize that we are already well into the predicted rise of the machine. In various sectors of employment, jobs are already being done effectively and efficiently by mechanisms possessing artificial intelligence. From multi-billion dollar corporations like Amazon to technology companies like iRobot to even the United Stated military, robotic technology is being looked to as an increasingly viable, cost-effective means of skilled labor as opposed to using a human workforce.
It’s an amazing time that we currently live in, even if we don’t quite realize it yet. Over the past decade or two, technology has evolved at such a remarkable rate that we have come to expect regular new innovations and technological developments to hit the market in rapid succession. Now, we hardly bat an eye if confronted by, say, a prescription-filling robot pharmacist or even a Jeopardy-playing IBM computer named Watson. This might well already be a robot’s world, and we’re just living in it.

If there’s one place on Earth you can already get a glimpse of our robot-assisted future, it’s Japan. Routinely at the forefront of robotics research, the country has brought us some of the weirdest automatons, most lifelike androids, and cutest helper-bots.
Nowhere is this more evident than at Nagasaki’s Henn-na Hotel, a hotel run by robots that opened this year. Walk into reception and a mechanised dinosaur will guide you through check-in; go to your room and a luggage bot will wheel your suitcase along beside you; get ready for bed and your own robot companion will turn out the lights.
Henn-na Hotel CEO Hideo Sawada sells his offering as part of a utopian vision where robots take over manual labour so humans can turn their attention to more creative pursuits. Replacing staff with robots might reduce labour costs, but their appeal to visitors needs to last beyond novelty value.
Motherboard host Ben Ferguson checks into the robot hotel in the first episode of our new travel series Voyager, made possible by travel tool KAYAK (http://www.kayak.co.uk/). The robot workers he meets are courteous and communicative, but can they emulate the human warmth of their flesh-and-blood counterparts? Meet Atlas, a humanoid robot developed by the American robotics company Boston Dynamics which now owned by Google.
It was developed with funding and oversight from the United States - Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency or (DARPA)
Altas stands 1.8m or 6 foot tall, weighs 150Kg and is designed for a variety of search and rescue tasks.
Atlas is based on Boston Dynamics' earlier PETMAN humanoid robot.
It has four hydraulically-actuated limbs and is constructed of aluminum and titanium and is illuminated with blue LEDs.
Atlas is equipped with two vision systems, a laser rangefinder and stereo cameras, both controlled by an on board computer.
It can not only walk across rough terrain, it reacts to slipping and retain it balance much like human can.
It has hands with fine motor skill capabilities and its limbs possess a total of 28 degrees of freedom.
It Can do advanced tasks like finding and picking up objects and if they are dropped it will try again and again until it completes the task.
Atlas can also react to external forces like being pushed or kicked and can get up if it falls over.
It can also do things like finding and opening doors, climbing ladders, clearing debris, locating valves, the sort of tasks human rescue works would need to do.

Spot is the latest electrically-powered, hydraulically-actuated, four-legged robot to come from Boston Dynamics
Designed for indoor and out door operation it can a good kicking from it’s makers, though really that just a good test to show its stability and ability to react to external forces.
At 1 meter tall and weighing 72kg, Spot is smaller than it previous versions like Bigdog and is all electric and much quieter without the petrol engine that the bigger robots like the LS3 have.
It uses a form or scanning LIDAR for it navigation and it’s backwards facing legs like that of a goat give to great agility.
It can negotiate rough ground, climb hills and stairs and can hop about like a real animal but it still remotely controlled at the moment
As for what purpose it would have is unclear but it could be a robot scout in military situation or autonomous guard dog but equally could be a mechanical pet. We'll have to wait until Boston Dynamics releases more information.
MIT cheetah robot

The Cheetah robot built by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is the first four legged robot to be able to not only autonomous jump over obstacles in its way but also run at up 28mph which is slightly faster than Usain Bolt.
Using its on board LIDAR visual system which uses Lasers to map the terrain in front of the robot, it can see where it is going and obstacles in its way.
The team at MIT developed a three-part algorithm to plan out the robot’s path, based on LIDAR data.
Both the vision and path-planning system are on board the robot, giving it complete autonomous control.
This works out the height of the objects and the distance from itself and the speed the robot is traveling at, then it works out the best place to jump and clear the object.
In experiments on a treadmill and an indoor track, the cheetah robot successfully cleared obstacles up to 18 inches tall — more than half of the robot’s own height — while maintaining an average running speed of 5 miles per hour.
Testing the robot in an open area actually worked better that on the treadmill because it has more time to react with it clearing 90% of the obstacles compared to 70% on the more limited area of the treadmill.
Honda ASIMO
Probably the most well know Robot is the Japanese Honda ASIMO and while it may now act very realistically its being a long time in the making.
In 1986 Honda undertook a challenge that seemed straight out of science fiction, to build a humanoid robot that might one day help people, move with them and improve their lives.
Making this dream a reality took decades and tested the skill of the world's most capable engineers.
Their first hurdle was to build a machine that could walk on two legs, a process that we humans take for granted and Honda thoroughly researched.........

Transformers toys that are small but play big. My Son unboxes and plays with Transformers Mini-Con and Transformers Deployers. The little Mini-Con's we will look over are Swelter, Decepticon Back, Slipstream, Decepticon Hammer. The Mini-Con Deployers reviewed are Autobot Drift & Jetstorm and Overload & Backtrack. These Transformers toys are aimed at younger Transformer fans. To my surprise the small Mini-Con Transformers do play quite well and there is a ton of little pieces of armour and weapons add to these Transformer toys. Transformers toys that are small but play big. My Son unboxes and plays with Transformers Mini-Con and Transformers Deployers. The little Mini-Con's we will look over are Swelter, Decepticon Back, Slipstream, Decepticon Hammer. The Mini-Con Deployers reviewed are Autobot Drift & Jetstorm and Overload & Backtrack. These Transformers toys are aimed at younger Transformer fans. To my surprise the small Mini-Con Transformers do play quite well and there is a ton of little pieces of armour and weapons add to these Transformer toys. They do simple Transformations for fast Transformers battles. The Mini-Con Deployer Transformers are 7 step and 11 step. They do take a little bit of play to understand the transformation between robot and vehicle. We found these Transformers at K-Mart but we had trouble finding a huge variety. They seem like very popular Transformer toys.
