If there’s one place on Earth you can already get a glimpse of our robot-assisted future, it’s Japan. Routinely at the forefront of robotics research, the country has brought us some of the weirdest automatons, most lifelike androids, and cutest helper-bots.
Nowhere is this more evident than at Nagasaki’s Henn-na Hotel, a hotel run by robots that opened this year. Walk into reception and a mechanised dinosaur will guide you through check-in; go to your room and a luggage bot will wheel your suitcase along beside you; get ready for bed and your own robot companion will turn out the lights.
Henn-na Hotel CEO Hideo Sawada sells his offering as part of a utopian vision where robots take over manual labour so humans can turn their attention to more creative pursuits. Replacing staff with robots might reduce labour costs, but their appeal to visitors needs to last beyond novelty value.
Motherboard host Ben Ferguson checks into the robot hotel in the first episode of our new travel series Voyager, made possible by travel tool KAYAK (http://www.kayak.co.uk/). The robot workers he meets are courteous and communicative, but can they emulate the human warmth of their flesh-and-blood counterparts? Could robots really be our future holiday companions, or do man and machine ultimately get lost in translation?

エネルギッシュに「夢」を開く
1980年に旅行業界のベンチャーとして格安航空券販売をスタート。航空会社やホテルの経営などチャレンジを繰り返してきた。今年66歳の今でも事業に賭ける意欲は衰えることを知らない。会見でも新たな事業構想をエネルギッシュに披露した。
2010年には 長年赤字続きだった長崎の「ハウステンボス」を子会社化し、蘇生した。その秘訣を問われ、「まず黒字になるイメージを描いた。売り上げ2割増の目標を立て、無駄な経費を削る将来像を描いて計画に落としていった」と明かした。ハウステンボス歌劇団の結成や「100万本のバラ」プロジェクトなどが客の感動を呼び、来場者が増えたという。一方、成功の陰で「失敗したことも数限りある」とふり返った。
15年7月には ロボットホテル「変なホテル」を開業。ロボットがスタッフに代わって、チェックイン・アウトから清掃まで行い、当初30人いた従業員が、今ではわずか7人。近く6人体制になる。「ロボットホテルは格安観光需要に適合し、人出不足対策にもなる」と強調した。名古屋、大阪、東京のほか、台北、上海でも開設する計画という。
ロボットが人の仕事を奪うのではないかとの質問にも、「人がやりたくない仕事や単純作業はロボットがやり、人間の一日の労働時間8時間が5時間に短縮される。余暇を楽しむ時代が到来し、海外旅行にもっと行けるようになる」とよどみない。
本業の観光産業については、「自動車関連業界を抜き、日本最大の産業となる」と指摘。特にインバウンド（訪日観光）部門が大きく伸び、やがて年間6000万人規模に拡大すると予測した。「日本には観光資源が多いので情報をネットで広く伝えれば、もっと来てもらえる」と提案した。旅行ビジネスは「高所得者向けの超高級分野と格安分野に2極分化する」という。
H.I.S.の業務分野はロボット、エネルギー、農業、証券会社経営にまで広がる。「未来を見据え新しい産業、夢のある分野を開拓したい。儲けは世の中のために投資し、5年後、10年後に社会に貢献できるようにしたい」と終始前向きだった。

In Part 2, watch how Hideo Takamura fixes the chipped knife, while Terukazu Takamura commentates. There are three basic steps involved in sharpening a chipped knife: remove the steel along the largest chip by sharpening at a steep angle, sharpen deep (about half an inch) into the blade and obtain the original hamaguriba/clam shell shape, then sharpen to obtain a cutting edge. You will end up with a scratch on the side of your knife but to maintain the sharp edge of a Takamura, it has to be done! And remember to sharpen both sides equally as this is a sandwiched steel knife. If you sharpen one side more than the other to change the bevel angle, the knife will not be as sharp.

STORY: Dinosaur receptionists were on standby on Wednesday (March 15) as a second hotel staffed mostly by robots and automatons opened in Tokyo.
Media were invited ahead of of customers to check out the nine types of robots that help check guests in, clean the lobby, and entertain guests. Humans staff are available and help maintain the 140 automatons on site.
The first 'Henn-na hotel', which literally means "strange hotel", opened in Nagasaki, southern Japan in 2015 and was recognized as "the first robot-staffed hotel" in the world by Guinness World Records.
This second hotel, operated by low-cost travel agent H.I.S., has opened very close to Tokyo Disney Resort, a top Japanese tourist destination.
Manager Yukio Nagai says the 'hen' in the hotel's name which means strange in Japanese also can mean change and illustrates the hotel's potential to evolve.
The hotel main evolving attraction, he added, is the AI robots in every room.
When the hotel first opened in 2015, thirty humans were still needed to check the grounds and maintain the robots. That has been now cut down to only seven in each hotels now.
Hideo Sawada, CEO of low-cost travel agent H.I.S. insists he will take this business model global.
Room rates begin at 14,000 Yen ($122) for two people per night.
The third Henn-na hotel is scheduled to open this summer in central Japan.

Huis ten Bosch palace
Huis ten Bosch (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɦœy̯s tɛm bɔs]; English: "House in the Woods") is a royal palace in The Hague in the Netherlands. It is one of three official residences of the Dutch Royal Family, the other two being Noordeinde Palace in The Hague and the Royal Palace in Amsterdam.
Huis ten Bosch was the home of former Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands from 1981 to 2014; the current King Willem-Alexander and his family have announced plans to move into the palace in the near future. A replica of the palace was built in Sasebo, Japan, in a theme park bearing the same name.
History
17th and 18th century
Construction of Huis ten Bosch began on 2 September 1645, under the direction of Bartholomeus Drijffhout, and to a design by Pieter Post and Jacob van Campen. It was commissioned by Amalia von Solms, the wife of stadtholder Frederick Henry, on a parcel of land granted to her by the States General (Loonstra 1983, Slothouwer 1945). The first stone was laid by Elizabeth of Bohemia.

The first 'Henn-na hotel', which literally means "strange hotel", opened in Nagasaki, southern Japan in 2015 and was recognized as "the first robot-staffed hotel" in the world by Guinness World Records. This second hotel, operated by low-cost travel agent H.I.S., has opened very close to Tokyo Disney Resort, a top Japanese tourist destination. Manager Yukio Nagai says the 'hen' in the hotel's name which means strange in Japanese also can mean change and illustrates the hotel's potential to evolve. The hotel main evolving attraction, he added, is the AI robots in every room. When the hotel first opened in 2015, thirty humans were still needed to check the grounds and maintain the robots. That has been now cut down to only seven in each hotels now. Hideo Sawada, CEO of low-cost travel agent H.I.S. insists he will take this business model global. Room rates begin at 14,000 Yen ($122) for two people per night. The third Henn-na hotel is scheduled to open this summer in central Japan. -

He started wrestling when he was 4 years old, and currently lives a life consisting of only his part-time job and training at the gym. He has had 2 amateur fights so far and one professional fight, becoming MVP of each event. Many expect him to become a leading figure in the next generation of MMA fighters. Vale Tudo Japan is the biggest MMA event in Japan at the moment and Ryuto is seen competing alongside legends such as Hideo Tokoro and Caol Uno in their 3rd tournament on Oct. 5. Five-star hotels pride themselves on offering cordon bleu food and personal service, but a hotel in Japan may offer a glimpse of the future, because it will be staffed almost entirely by helpful humanoids. When the first guests check into at Henn-na Hotel in Nagasaki this July, they will be greeted by 10 eerily lifelike robots - and the mechanical service will not stop there. The robots will check in new guests before carrying their luggage and cleaning their rooms – and all with a smile. The robots are designed to look like and share the mannerisms as polite young Japanese women. They will look like they are really breathing, blink and make eye contact as well as altering their body language and tone to respond to guests’ requests. Their cloth uniform also makes them look more human. The robots will be multilingual and able to speak fluent Japanese, Chinese, Korean and English. Three of the uniformed robots will man the reception desk, another four will act as porters, while others will clean. An industrial robot will serve as a cloak room attendant. While human staff will be on hand to make sure everything runs smoothly in the hotel, company president Hideo Sawada said that he hopes the robots will carry out 90 per cent of tasks in the hotel. -

Walking through the doors of Henna Na hotel, or 'Weird Hotel', a robotic receptionist checks you in. The female humanoid on the left speaks in Japanese while the dinosaur on the right is for its English-speaking guests. Right after this peculiar encounter, an automatic trolley takes your luggage to your room. The hotel, located in Southwestern Japan, is ‘manned’ almost completely by robots in an effort to cut labor costs. Hideo Sawada, who runs the hotel, said the usage of robots is to utilize technology and achieve efficiency. One of the high-tech features of the hotel was the use of facial recognition technology. It allows the guests' face to be registered digitally when checking in. In case guests want their luggage carried to their room, an automated trolley helps them with their belongings. For storage purposes, a giant robotic arm places guests' items in boxes into the wall. The system is called a 'robot cloak room.' With all of the robots assigned to their specific duties around the hotel, the only real need for humans is for security. Security cameras, which are monitored by humans, make sure the guests are safe and that no one steals the expensive robots. There are three basic steps involved in sharpening a chipped knife: remove the steel along the largest chip by sharpening at a steep angle, sharpen deep (about half an inch) into the blade and obtain the original hamaguriba/clam shell shape, then sharpen to obtain a cutting edge. You will end up with a scratch on the side of your knife but to maintain the sharp edge of a Takamura, it has to be done! And remember to sharpen both sides equally as this is a sandwiched steel knife. If you sharpen one side more than the other to change the bevel angle, the knife will not be as sharp.

If there’s one place on Earth you can already get a glimpse of our robot-assisted future, it’s Japan. Routinely at the forefront of robotics research, the country has brought us some of the weirdest automatons, most lifelike androids, and cutest helper-bots.
Nowhere is this more evident than at Nagasaki’s Henn-na Hotel, a hotel run by robots that opened this year. Walk into reception and a mechanised dinosaur will guide you through check-in; go to your room and a luggage bot will wheel your suitcase along beside you; get ready for bed and your own robot companion will turn out the lights.
Henn-na Hotel CEO Hideo Sawada sells his offering as part of a utopian vision where robots take over manual labour so humans can turn their attention to more creative pursuits. Replacing staff with robots might reduce labour costs, but their appeal to visitors needs to last beyond novelty value.
Motherboard host Ben Ferguson checks into the robot hotel in the first episode of our new travel series Voyager, made possible by travel tool KAYAK (http://www.kayak.co.uk/). The robot workers he meets are courteous and communicative, but can they emulate the human warmth of their flesh-and-blood counterparts? 1980年に旅行業界のベンチャーとして格安航空券販売をスタート。航空会社やホテルの経営などチャレンジを繰り返してきた。今年66歳の今でも事業に賭ける意欲は衰えることを知らない。会見でも新たな事業構想をエネルギッシュに披露した。
2010年には 長年赤字続きだった長崎の「ハウステンボス」を子会社化し、蘇生した。その秘訣を問われ、「まず黒字になるイメージを描いた。売り上げ2割増の目標を立て、無駄な経費を削る将来像を描いて計画に落としていった」と明かした。ハウステンボス歌劇団の結成や「100万本のバラ」プロジェクトなどが客の感動を呼び、来場者が増えたという。一方、成功の陰で「失敗したことも数限りある」とふり返った。
15年7月には ロボットホテル「変なホテル」を開業。ロボットがスタッフに代わって、チェックイン・アウトから清掃まで行い、当初30人いた従業員が、今ではわずか7人。近く6人体制になる。「ロボットホテルは格安観光需要に適合し、人出不足対策にもなる」と強調した。名古屋、大阪、東京のほか、台北、上海でも開設する計画という。
ロボットが人の仕事を奪うのではないかとの質問にも、「人がやりたくない仕事や単純作業はロボットがやり、人間の一日の労働時間8時間が5時間に短縮される。余暇を楽しむ時代が到来し、海外旅行にもっと行けるようになる」とよどみない。
本業の観光産業については、「自動車関連業界を抜き、日本最大の産業となる」と指摘。特にインバウンド（訪日観光）部門が大きく伸び、やがて年間6000万人規模に拡大すると予測した。「日本には観光資源が多いので情報をネットで広く伝えれば、もっと来てもらえる」と提案した。旅行ビジネスは「高所得者向けの超高級分野と格安分野に2極分化する」という。
H.I.S.の業務分野はロボット、エネルギー、農業、証券会社経営にまで広がる。「未来を見据え新しい産業、夢のある分野を開拓したい。儲けは世の中のために投資し、5年後、10年後に社会に貢献できるようにしたい」と終始前向きだった。

There are three basic steps involved in sharpening a chipped knife: remove the steel along the largest chip by sharpening at a steep angle, sharpen deep (about half an inch) into the blade and obtain the original hamaguriba/clam shell shape, then sharpen to obtain a cutting edge. You will end up with a scratch on the side of your knife but to maintain the sharp edge of a Takamura, it has to be done! And remember to sharpen both sides equally as this is a sandwiched steel knife. If you sharpen one side more than the other to change the bevel angle, the knife will not be as sharp.

STORY: Dinosaur receptionists were on standby on Wednesday (March 15) as a second hotel staffed mostly by robots and automatons opened in Tokyo.
Media were invited ahead of of customers to check out the nine types of robots that help check guests in, clean the lobby, and entertain guests. Humans staff are available and help maintain the 140 automatons on site.
The first 'Henn-na hotel', which literally means "strange hotel", opened in Nagasaki, southern Japan in 2015 and was recognized as "the first robot-staffed hotel" in the world by Guinness World Records.
This second hotel, operated by low-cost travel agent H.I.S., has opened very close to Tokyo Disney Resort, a top Japanese tourist destination.
Manager Yukio Nagai says the 'hen' in the hotel's name which means strange in Japanese also can mean change and illustrates the hotel's potential to evolve.
The hotel main evolving attraction, he added, is the AI robots in every room.
When the hotel first opened in 2015, thirty humans were still needed to check the grounds and maintain the robots. That has been now cut down to only seven in each hotels now.
Hideo Sawada, CEO of low-cost travel agent H.I.S. insists he will take this business model global.
Room rates begin at 14,000 Yen ($122) for two people per night.
The third Henn-na hotel is scheduled to open this summer in central Japan.

STORY: Dinosaur receptionists were on standby on Wednesday (March 15) as a second hotel staffed mostly by robots and automatons opened in Tokyo.
Media were invited ahead of of customers to check out the nine types of robots that help check guests in, clean the lobby, and entertain guests. Humans staff are available and help maintain the 140 automatons on site.
The first 'Henn-na hotel', which literally means "strange hotel", opened in Nagasaki, southern Japan in 2015 and was recognized as "the first robot-staffed hotel" in the world by Guinness World Records.
This second hotel, operated by low-cost travel agent H.I.S., has opened very close to Tokyo Disney Resort, a top Japanese tourist destination.
Manager Yukio Nagai says the 'hen' in the hotel's name which means strange in Japanese also can mean change and illustrates the hotel's potential to evolve.
The hotel main evolving attraction, he added, is the AI robots in every room.
When the hotel first opened in 2015, thirty humans were still needed to check the grounds and maintain the robots. That has been now cut down to only seven in each hotels now.
Hideo Sawada, CEO of low-cost travel agent H.I.S. insists he will take this business model global.
Room rates begin at 14,000 Yen ($122) for two people per night.
The third Henn-na hotel is scheduled to open this summer in central Japan.

He started wrestling when he was 4 years old, and currently lives a life consisting of only his part-time job and training at the gym. He has had 2 amateur fights so far and one professional fight, becoming MVP of each event. Many expect him to become a leading figure in the next generation of MMA fighters.
Vale Tudo Japan is the biggest MMA event in Japan at the moment and Ryuto is seen competing alongside legends such as Hideo Tokoro and Caol Uno in their 3rd tournament on Oct. 5. The world famous Kid Yamamoto was also in attendance, explaining that he "knew of Sawada since he was little, and he has tremendous power in the ring."
Sawada's mentor, as well as pound-for-pound MMA queen Megumi Fuji, will also have her retirement fight / revenge match in the same event against Jessica Aguilar.

Five-star hotels pride themselves on offering cordon bleu food and personal service, but a hotel in Japan may offer a glimpse of the future, because it will be staffed almost entirely by helpful humanoids.
When the first guests check into at Henn-na Hotel in Nagasaki this July, they will be greeted by 10 eerily lifelike robots - and the mechanical service will not stop there.
The robots will check in new guests before carrying their luggage and cleaning their rooms – and all with a smile.
The robots are designed to look like and share the mannerisms as polite young Japanese women.
They will look like they are really breathing, blink and make eye contact as well as altering their body language and tone to respond to guests’ requests. Their cloth uniform also makes them look more human.
The robots will be multilingual and able to speak fluent Japanese, Chinese, Korean and English.
Three of the uniformed robots will man the reception desk, another four will act as porters, while others will clean.
An industrial robot will serve as a cloak room attendant.
While human staff will be on hand to make sure everything runs smoothly in the hotel, company president Hideo Sawada said that he hopes the robots will carry out 90 per cent of tasks in the hotel.

Right after this peculiar encounter, an automatic trolley takes your luggage to your room. The hotel, located in Southwestern Japan, is ‘manned’ almost completely by robots in an effort to cut labor costs. Hideo Sawada, who runs the hotel, said the usage of robots is to utilize technology and achieve efficiency. One of the high-tech features of the hotel was the use of facial recognition technology. It allows the guests' face to be registered digitally when checking in. In case guests want their luggage carried to their room, an automated trolley helps them with their belongings. For storage purposes, a giant robotic arm places guests' items in boxes into the wall. The system is called a 'robot cloak room.' With all of the robots assigned to their specific duties around the hotel, the only real need for humans is for security. Security cameras, which are monitored by humans, make sure the guests are safe and that no one steals the expensive robots.
