Microsoft
Microsoft starts off the countdown in the #10 position but with sales of its tablets and phones expected to rise, it will likely start climbing up the ranks. The majority of its $23 billion dollar net income comes in from the commercial business sector.
Microsoft Office and the
Windows operating system are 2 of the main bread-winners of Microsoft.
Number 9: BP
BP,
British Petroleum, enters the countdown at #9 with $24 billion dollars net income from continued operations. BP is one of the top 3 most profitable providers of energy worldwide. BP is based in
London, England, but they operate in over 80 countries.
Number 8:
Bank of China
The Bank of China is one of the biggest government owned banks in
China. Founded in 1912 it is also the oldest bank in China. It has also been the subject of speculation for money laundering.
$26 billion dollars is its net income from continued operations.
Number 7:
Agricultural Bank of China
The Agricultural Bank of China, founded in 1951, is a provider of banking services worldwide. There are 24,
000 branches in China and several overseas branches. The headquarters is located in
Beijing, China. Its net income from continued operations is almost $28 billion dollars.
Number 6:
Samsung Electronics
Samsung Electronics is the most profitable company in
South Korea by over a billion dollars.
Samsung makes smartphones, washing machines/dryers, health monitors, televisions, and more. Samsung’s net income from continued operations is $29 billion dollars.
Number 5: ExxonMobil
The U.S. enters into the top 10 Most Successful
Business countdown with the oil and gas company, ExxonMobil. ExxonMobil is the largest oil refiner and marketer of petroleum products in the world. Exxon has a little over $35 billion net profit from continued operations making it the 5th most successful business in the world.

China Construction Bank Corporation
China Construction Bank Corporation is one of several
Chinese banks that are the most successful businesses in the world. They have an astounding equity return of 21% compared to the
U.S. most profitable bank
Wells Fargo’s 13%.
Number 3: Gazprom
OAO
Breaking its way into the top 3 is Gazprom. Gazprom is a
Russian natural gas company which claims to own the largest natural gas reserves in the world. It is controlled by the
Russian government (they own 50% of company stock) and it has almost $39 million dollars in net income from continued operations.
Number 2:
Apple
With net income from continued operations of almost $40 billion dollars, Apple is the 2nd most successful business in the world. It was founded in
1976 and is based in
Cupertino, California. One of its 3 founders,
Steve Jobs, who passed away in
2011, was known as the visionary and is credited for making the company what it is today.
Number 1:
Industrial and Commercial Bank of China
The #1 Most Successful Business in the world is the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. It is a massive chain of diversified banks. Its net income from continued operations is nearing $50 billion dollars. The bank has long been subject to suspicion of having corrupt business practices and possible criminal activity but there has been no definitive proof.
Time for the question of the day:
As you can see, a lot of the most successful business are banks in China, many of which may be implementing and condoning corrupt practices. So, if a company hits a certain size, do you think it should be subject heavy restrictions and investigation by world groups like the world ban or even the UN to ensure fair practice? Or should the country itself be the sole regulation setter and monitoring entity for that company?
