On bivouac in Kisatchie National Forest,
a wild combat veteran Drill Sergeant
promised the grunts, “No rain coming tonight,
so no need for you m-fuckers to pitch tents!
Just get ya’ girly asses beneath sleeping bags,
and maybe a Pygmy Rattler will come tuck y’all in.”

Last stand: Destroying the last tropical rain forest Brazilian Amazon

From the air, the earth is shorn and desiccated. Waves of heat billow upward, mixed with plumes of smoke. A few lonely trees stand in relief against the flattened landscape, while knots of cattle clump together in dusty paddocks ringed by barbed wire. This is the Brazilian state of Rondônia, the heart of the Amazon, wedged between the vast state of Amazonas to the north and, due south, Bolivia.

The Illusion of Rights

At 80, Failed Abbas is Probed, Derided and Scapegoated

“We won’t act like them, we will not use violence or force, we are peaceful, we believe in peace, in peaceful popular resistance.” This was part of a message issued by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in October, only days after a few incidents took place in which Palestinian youth were accused of attacking Israeli soldiers and settlers with knives.
