Hermann Hesse won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946 and this work was mentioned in the Prize. The book is the fictional biography of Joseph Knecht, a Magister Ludi in Castalia in a world several centuries in the future than our own where the ultimate synthesis of knowledge is studied in a ritualized game known as the Glass Bead Game.

Abraham Ramonwana, head guide at Tuli Safari Lodge says: “if a mine develops in South Africa, it’s also going to affect Botswana and Zimbabwe”.
The authorisation given to an Australian company called Coal of Africa Limited (CoAL) to construct an open-cast coal mine, called the Vele Colliery, just outside of the boundaries of the Mapungubwe National Park will affect this fragile natural harmony. To Abraham, "mining and industry is a short term plan, tourism is a long-term plan."
Abraham, like many others, believes that the Mapungubwe region should be preserved and protected from the impacts of infrastructural development, and allowed to remain pristine for generations to come.
Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site is managed by South African National Parks (SANParks) and its partners. The Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area is being developed based on the stipulations of a Memorandum of Understanding between Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe that was signed on 22 June 2006. These are officially mandated programmes in which the South African government, the province and private sector have invested. With the official opening of the Mapungubwe National Park on 24 September 2004, the first of three national objectives for the region was reached. The other two objectives were the area’s listing as a World Heritage Site, which happened in 2003, and the establishment of a Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA).
TFCAs promote conservation and the sustainable use of biological and cultural resources, while also furthering goals of regional peace, co-operation and socio-economic development. Both Transfrontier Parks and Transfrontier Conservation Areas aim to provide jobs and opportunities for revenue generation to local people. By so improving the lives of rural communities it is hoped that they will in turn contribute to biodiversity conservation and demonstrate the economic and social advantages that can be achieved through conservation. This vision of cross-border collaboration realises the Southern African Development Community’s objective of promoting synergy for economic, social and conservation benefit over the subcontinent.
TFCAs contribute to the broader aims of trans-boundary ecosystem management, integration of conservation with development, promotion of regional cooperation and socio-economic development on the southern African sub-continent, while also forming an important part of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD).
The Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area has become recognised as the ‘cultural TFCA’. Visitors flock to the area not only to see the magnificent sandstone formations, the wide variety of trees – notably the enormous baobab – and game and birdlife, but also to experience a kinship with past generations. The cultural resources of the Limpopo-Shashe basin are associated with Iron Age settlements of around 1200 AD. The similarity of ivory objects, pottery remains and imported glass beads excavated at different sites spread across the modern international borders of Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe, attests to the cultural affinity of the people that lived in the Limpopo-Shashe basin during the Iron Age.
The Mapungubwe World Heritage Site is a major attraction in the 30 000 ha park and was home to the famous Golden Rhino, a symbol of the power of the King of the Mapungubwe people who inhabited the Limpopo River Valley between 900 AD and 1300 AD. At that time Mapungubwe had developed into the largest kingdom on the subcontinent. It is believed that a highly sophisticated civilisation, which traded with Arabia, Egypt, India and China, existed at Mapungubwe.
The presence of heavy industry in the Mapungubwe area will impact enormously on its tourism and conservation, to such a degree that these activities will have to be reconsidered for the future. South Africa signed a binding document whereby it agreed to be a partner in a trilateral conservation development. By allowing that same conservation area to become part of an industrial area, it is not adhering to the spirit of that agreement.

The Glass Bead Game
The Glass Bead Game (German: Das Glasperlenspiel) is the last full-length novel of the German author Hermann Hesse. It was begun in 1931 and published in Switzerland in 1943 after being rejected for publication in Germany due to Hesse's anti-Fascist views. A few years later, in 1946, Hesse went on to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. In honoring him in its Award Ceremony Speech, the Swedish Academy said that the novel "occupies a special position" in Hesse's work.
"Glass Bead Game" is a literal translation of the German title, but the book has also been published under the title Magister Ludi, Latin for "Master of the Game", which is an honorific title awarded to the book's central character. "Magister Ludi" can also be seen as a pun: lud- is a Latin stem meaning both "game" and "school". However, the title Magister Ludi is misleading, as it implies the book is a straightforward bildungsroman. In reality, the book touches on many different genres, and the bulk of the story is on one level a parody of the biography genre.

Bead Game
Bead Game (French: Histoire de perles) is a 1977 animated short film by Ishu Patel, creating by arranging beads into the shapes of real and mythical creatures, who absorb and devour another, evolving into scenes of modern human warfare. Jnan Prakash Ghosh provides music for the 5 min 35 second film, which was produced at the National Film Board of Canada (NFB).
The film's technique was inspired by the beadwork of Inuit women. The increasing aggression shown by the creatures in Bead Game was intended as a cautionary tale about human hostility and nuclear weapons.
Awards
Awards for Bead Game include a BAFTA Award for best short fictional film, a Bronze Plaque in the art and culture category at the Columbus International Film & Video Festival, a Golden Gate Award for outstanding achievement at the San Francisco International Film Festival, and a Special Prize for Animation at the International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film. The film was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 50th Academy Awards, losing to another NFB animated short, The Sand Castle.

What You Don't See is the second studio album by American rock band The Story So Far.
Background
The Story So Far signed to Pure Noise in March 2010. The band released their debut album in June 2011. The band supported We Are the Union and I Call Fives in July. The band toured alongside Heartsounds and Handguns in August. The band supported Senses Fail in November. From late February to early March 2012 the band went on the Pure Noise Records Tour alongside Handguns, I Call Fives, Daybreaker, The American Scene and Forever Came Calling. In early November, the band supported New Found Glory on the Road to Warped Tour in the UK. From late November to mid-December, the band supported New Found Glory on the 10th anniversary tour for their Sticks and Stones album. The band listened to New Found Glory when they were younger and did not expect tour with them in their lifetime.
Composition and recording
On December 31, 2011 it was announced that The Story So Far was recording new material. In March 2012 it was announced the band would be writing new songs in the summer. In August it was posted that the band were recording "something" at Panda Studios. The band recorded at Panda Studios in San Francisco, in the fall. In an October 2012 interview with Alternative Press bassist Kelen Capener revealed the band were "just starting [to record] drum [tracks]". The band went to the studio with 13 songs but were writing new material during the record process in case they want to drop any of the previously written material. The band were figuring out what made their previous record excellent and attempt to expanded on it. The album was produced by Steve Klein of New Found Glory and Sam Pura. Klein originally visited the band to see what material they had and gave them tips.

Mary: I gotta change shoes. Mary: Okay, there we go. Now, that’s so much better. Stuart: Ladies and gentlemen, obviously, let’s begin at the beginning. Normally, the protocol is that we give people a round of applause at the end of the event. In this particular case, we’re going to break with all the protocols, because I know a lot of people that are in the audience, I’ve seen faces, I’ve seen people with reputations in the audience, and I think that all of us can say, unanimously that, Mary probably doesn’t really deeply understand how much impact her singing and her reputation has had in our lives, the way it’s shaped the love that we’ve got for the music. So, ladies and gentlemen, Mary Wilson of The Supremes, come on. [applause] Stuart: So, where to start? Let’s start with a quick question. Mary, I wanted to - Mary: Well, I need to explain something. Stuart: Yes, my dear. Mary: Okay, before we go any further. I’m not the founding - the only founding member of The Supremes, as most of you know. Florence, Diane and Betty McGlown, are the founding members of The Supremes, and I cannot take that credit all myself. So, the people here in the audience understand and know that, so, let’s make that very clear. Stuart: Well, let’s start with the first question, I was watching you last night in the opening of the exhibition, singing, and sung a couple of songs for us, it was great, and one of the things that struck me is, actually, without any hesitation, I’d forgotten how great a solo singer you are, how great a singer you are. And I wonder if that actually, when we go back to The Supremes, there’s been criticisms in the past, for example, that Diana was actually the least good singer of The Supremes, she had a very specific voice. And I just wanted to get your thoughts about - just describe the different voices that were in The Supremes. Mary: Well, I don’t think that you can - anyone said that Diane was the least good singer in The Supremes, that’s not true, and I’ve never ever said anything like that. My point was always to sort of bring forward the fact that Florence Ballard was a great singer, and I was also a good singer. So, I think people - and sometimes when we tried to explain or say things like that, people think that you’re saying that the other person is not that good. That was not my point, at all. My point was saying that Florence Ballad was a Gospel, strong singer, Diane was a pop singer and I was kind of, like, the ballad singer, so, we each had our own, you know, good points. Stuart: And at a time, and in a city, which probably, without any hesitation, you could say was probably, at its time, the greatest musical city in the world, bar none. I mean, if you actually compare and contrast it with the other great regional city of the time, Liverpool, many of the Liverpool acts moved down to London and whatever, but there you were, in Detroit, touring the world, phenomenal place. Just to get some grasp on this, simply your high school alone, who did you go to school with? Mary: Well, in Detroit, we all kind of grew up in the projects. Detroit was really a small - is, a small town. And Smokey Robinson, I guess, was in the same - lived in the neighbourhood as Diana Ross. I went to high school with some of The Miracles, which was Bobby Rogers. The person that did a lot of singing - or writing, with Smokey Robinson, was Al Gutierrez, Marvin Tarplin, and he and I went to high school together. Florence went to the same high school as some of The Temptations. So, we all came from pretty much the same neighbourhood, even though it was kind of large. Stuart: And when did you first remember the sense that Mary Wilson had the desire to be a singer? Where did the desire come from? Mary: Well, you know, people like Little Richard, you know, there was Jackie Wilson, there was Frankie Lyman and The Teenagers was one of my favourite ... Stuart: He was a bad boy, though, wasn’t he? Referring to Hermann Hesse’s book “The Glass Bead Game” in which the glass bead game is closely related to music making we wanted to built a glass beat game in which a player or a group of players can make music by putting marbles on a game board. The idea includes building an instrument for simple music making as well as exploring the possibilities of using the setup as a game with rules focusing on topics like sound, music, spatialization, hearing, psychology, tactical behavior and synesthesia. The Game was created by Hanna Schraffenberger, Alwin de Rooij and Arnout Terpstra.

Video documentation of a video installation at San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, 2009. Klage/Lament is a four channel installation piece created by Lewis deSoto with Erin Neff (voice). Each channel is a stanza from a poem found in the book "The Glass Bead Game," by Hermann Hesse (1943). The poem is a lament that human life is constantly changeable, never fixed, never at rest. The work is installed in a long fire corridor at the institute. A small aperture lets in natural light through a blue gel. As one walks through the corridor, one encounters four voices singing simultaneously. Because each of the stanzas are time independent of one another, the effect is ever changing. It too, never stays the same.

Abraham Ramonwana, head guide at Tuli Safari Lodge says: “if a mine develops in South Africa, it’s also going to affect Botswana and Zimbabwe”.
The authorisation given to an Australian company called Coal of Africa Limited (CoAL) to construct an open-cast coal mine, called the Vele Colliery, just outside of the boundaries of the Mapungubwe National Park will affect this fragile natural harmony. To Abraham, "mining and industry is a short term plan, tourism is a long-term plan."
Abraham, like many others, believes that the Mapungubwe region should be preserved and protected from the impacts of infrastructural development, and allowed to remain pristine for generations to come.
Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site is managed by South African National Parks (SANParks) and its partners. The Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area is being developed based on the stipulations of a Memorandum of Understanding between Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe that was signed on 22 June 2006. These are officially mandated programmes in which the South African government, the province and private sector have invested. With the official opening of the Mapungubwe National Park on 24 September 2004, the first of three national objectives for the region was reached. The other two objectives were the area’s listing as a World Heritage Site, which happened in 2003, and the establishment of a Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA).
TFCAs promote conservation and the sustainable use of biological and cultural resources, while also furthering goals of regional peace, co-operation and socio-economic development. Both Transfrontier Parks and Transfrontier Conservation Areas aim to provide jobs and opportunities for revenue generation to local people. By so improving the lives of rural communities it is hoped that they will in turn contribute to biodiversity conservation and demonstrate the economic and social advantages that can be achieved through conservation. This vision of cross-border collaboration realises the Southern African Development Community’s objective of promoting synergy for economic, social and conservation benefit over the subcontinent.
TFCAs contribute to the broader aims of trans-boundary ecosystem management, integration of conservation with development, promotion of regional cooperation and socio-economic development on the southern African sub-continent, while also forming an important part of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD).
The Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area has become recognised as the ‘cultural TFCA’. Visitors flock to the area not only to see the magnificent sandstone formations, the wide variety of trees – notably the enormous baobab – and game and birdlife, but also to experience a kinship with past generations. The cultural resources of the Limpopo-Shashe basin are associated with Iron Age settlements of around 1200 AD. The similarity of ivory objects, pottery remains and imported glass beads excavated at different sites spread across the modern international borders of Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe, attests to the cultural affinity of the people that lived in the Limpopo-Shashe basin during the Iron Age.
The Mapungubwe World Heritage Site is a major attraction in the 30 000 ha park and was home to the famous Golden Rhino, a symbol of the power of the King of the Mapungubwe people who inhabited the Limpopo River Valley between 900 AD and 1300 AD. At that time Mapungubwe had developed into the largest kingdom on the subcontinent. It is believed that a highly sophisticated civilisation, which traded with Arabia, Egypt, India and China, existed at Mapungubwe.
The presence of heavy industry in the Mapungubwe area will impact enormously on its tourism and conservation, to such a degree that these activities will have to be reconsidered for the future. South Africa signed a binding document whereby it agreed to be a partner in a trilateral conservation development. By allowing that same conservation area to become part of an industrial area, it is not adhering to the spirit of that agreement.

Stuart: Ladies and gentlemen, obviously, let’s begin at the beginning. Normally, the protocol is that we give people a round of applause at the end of the event. In this particular case, we’re going to break with all the protocols, because I know a lot of people that are in the audience, I’ve seen faces, I’ve seen people with reputations in the audience, and I think that all of us can say, unanimously that, Mary probably doesn’t really deeply understand how much impact her singing and her reputation has had in our lives, the way it’s shaped the love that we’ve got for the music. So, ladies and gentlemen, Mary Wilson of The Supremes, come on.

Stuart: So, where to start? Let’s start with a quick question. Mary, I wanted to -
Mary: Well, I need to explain something.
Stuart: Yes, my dear.
Mary: Okay, before we go any further. I’m not the founding - the only founding member of The Supremes, as most of you know. Florence, Diane and Betty McGlown, are the founding members of The Supremes, and I cannot take that credit all myself. So, the people here in the audience understand and know that, so, let’s make that very clear.
Stuart: Well, let’s start with the first question, I was watching you last night in the opening of the exhibition, singing, and sung a couple of songs for us, it was great, and one of the things that struck me is, actually, without any hesitation, I’d forgotten how great a solo singer you are, how great a singer you are. And I wonder if that actually, when we go back to The Supremes, there’s been criticisms in the past, for example, that Diana was actually the least good singer of The Supremes, she had a very specific voice. And I just wanted to get your thoughts about - just describe the different voices that were in The Supremes.
Mary: Well, I don’t think that you can - anyone said that Diane was the least good singer in The Supremes, that’s not true, and I’ve never ever said anything like that. My point was always to sort of bring forward the fact that Florence Ballard was a great singer, and I was also a good singer. So, I think people - and sometimes when we tried to explain or say things like that, people think that you’re saying that the other person is not that good. That was not my point, at all. My point was saying that Florence Ballad was a Gospel, strong singer, Diane was a pop singer and I was kind of, like, the ballad singer, so, we each had our own, you know, good points.
Stuart: And at a time, and in a city, which probably, without any hesitation, you could say was probably, at its time, the greatest musical city in the world, bar none. I mean, if you actually compare and contrast it with the other great regional city of the time, Liverpool, many of the Liverpool acts moved down to London and whatever, but there you were, in Detroit, touring the world, phenomenal place. Just to get some grasp on this, simply your high school alone, who did you go to school with?
Mary: Well, in Detroit, we all kind of grew up in the projects. Detroit was really a small - is, a small town. And Smokey Robinson, I guess, was in the same - lived in the neighbourhood as Diana Ross. I went to high school with some of The Miracles, which was Bobby Rogers. The person that did a lot of singing - or writing, with Smokey Robinson, was Al Gutierrez, Marvin Tarplin, and he and I went to high school together. Florence went to the same high school as some of The Temptations. So, we all came from pretty much the same neighbourhood, even though it was kind of large.
Stuart: And when did you first remember the sense that Mary Wilson had the desire to be a singer? Where did the desire come from?
Mary: Well, you know, people like Little Richard, you know, there was Jackie Wilson, there was Frankie Lyman and The Teenagers was one of my favourite ...
Stuart: He was a bad boy, though, wasn’t he?
Mary: He was a what?
Stuart: He was a bad boy.
Mary: I don’t know, I was too young.
Stuart: No, he was a very bad boy, Mary.
Mary: Well, you know, doctors don’t tell secrets on other doctors. But, we all kind of bad later on. But, yeah, you know, from just - oops, we don’t want to go there right now - but, anyway, when I was born, my mother said that when the doctors spanked me, I started singing. So, I mean, I did that, but I never ever thought that it was different, I thought that everybody woke up in the morning singing. You know, I thought that everyone did that. I didn’t realise, until I became one of the members of The Primettes, that that was something very special. Then I realised that that talent was special, but, prior to that, I would just, you know, woke up and start singing, " ooooooo," you know, whatever, and just ...

THE WARRIORS OF THE THUNDERERS
A young man named Watakwuna sorrowed because of the reverses his people were suffering at the hands of their more powerful enemies. So sad was he that he blackened his face with charcoal and retired to an isolated spot to fast and pray. His entreaties reached the ears of the sun and his lieutenant the Morningstar. According to their instructions, the I'namaki- wuk, or thunderers, took pity on him, and sent him word to come to them.
He was told to take a straight course westward across the ocean until he came to an island of rock projecting high above the surrounding waters.
Here the vision told him he would find the thunderers.
When Watakwuna awoke from his vision he was overjoyed, but yet afraid. He made a sacrifice to the Thunderbrids and to the offering he invited seven pure young men who had never used tobacco or known women. When these youths were gathered in his medicine lodge Watakwuna offered tobacco to the thunderers as a preliminary service and then explained the purpose of the ceremony to his guests, relating his dream and his subsequent fears. The revelation made a profound impression upon the young men, who believed his words, and after some discussion, they resolved to accompany Watak-
wuna on his westward journey to the home of the Ina'makiwuk. Accordingly, the little party, headed by Watakwuna, set forth for the west. The journey was toilsome and the way beset with perils. Often
the adventurers were tempted to turn back, but always, when it seemed as Watakwttna, Club-in-his-hand, a "brave name," one of the type bestowed on valiant
warriors. though human strength and courage could hold out no longer, spirits would appear to them and lure them on, until at length they reached the shore of the Western Ocean. Here they paused, unable to proceed, for they did not know how to go across the water. At this point the thunderers appeared again to Watakwuna in a vision and instructed him to build an elm bark canoe, the first one ever known to man, and the prototype from which all subsequent canoes were modeled.
When the boat was built by Watakwiina and his seven helpers, they launched it and paddled out to sea. They soon passed beyond sight of land, and for days they were frightened because they could see nothing. Yet invisible spirits accompanied and encouraged them until at last they reached their goal. Here were gathered a great number of thunderbirds in human form, waiting for them. As soon asWatakwuna had landed, accompanied by his followers, the chief of the thunderers who was greater and handsomer
than all the others, came forward and addressed him as follows : —
No'se (grandchild) you have come to me according to my command, I was
troubled in my heart when I saw you fasting and suffering, growing light in flesh and thin in body. Now you have gained great honor, I have taken pity on you. I am going to give you this war bundle to use upon the earth. You shall feed it, and give
sacrifices to it for my sake and in my behalf. You shall be empowered to use this thing at your desire. It shall protect you, and your children and grandchildren, so that you and they shall live to see your gray hairs. I command you to use it in the way which I shall make clear to you, and if you obey me, it shall obey you.
Tobacco shall be the chief thing to please it, and when you give it tobacco you will delight us, its masters. You shall take these things which I have here back to the earth again, and when you reach your home, you shall make some others according to my instructions.
Here is an egg, put that in the bundle. Here is a powder, put that in the bundle. These two articles shall enable you to set fire to the earth at your desire. Here is a little bow, the image of an arrow, and a scabbard to carry. Here are all the birds of the air, that are after my kind. They will lend their assistance when trouble overtakes you. Take this red paint along, that you may apply it to your men who accompany you when you go to war, and the sight of it will please me. It will put new life into you and your men. Through my spiritual power I gave you the dream that called you here to see me, through it you shall be able to destroy the enemies
that intend to kill you. You shall conquer, and victory will always be yours. The enemies that you shall slay will be food for me and for the war bundle.
When you return you shall carve my image upon a board and place it in the bundle, in order to please me. You must take two plain square blocks, and upon each of these outline my figure in sacred red paint, one shall represent me as a Great Powered Bird, and one shall represent me as a man with a great lighting-bolt in my hand.
"I am of dual nature. I can change myself into either a bird or a man at will."
(And indeed the Thunder-bird-beings have been known to come to earth in
human form. They have appeared as homely men, short and thick-set, with heavy muscles in their arms and

The idea includes building an instrument for simple music making as well as exploring the possibilities of using the setup as a game with rules focusing on topics like sound, music, spatialization, hearing, psychology, tactical behavior and synesthesia.
The Game was created by Hanna Schraffenberger, Alwin de Rooij and Arnout Terpstra.

This Suite was composed in 1989. You can find it on the 3 CD's Box "Le Jour des Merveilles" (Bayard Musique, Paris, 2009).

Video documentation of a video installation at San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, 2009. Klage/Lament is a four channel installation piece created by Lewis deSoto with Erin Neff (voice). Each channel is a stanza from a poem found in the book "The Glass Bead Game," by Hermann Hesse (1943). The poem is a lament that human life is constantly changeable, never fixed, never at rest. The work is installed in a long fire corridor at the institute. A small aperture lets in natural light through a blue gel. As one walks through the corridor, one encounters four voices singing simultaneously. Because each of the stanzas are time independent of one another, the effect is ever changing. It too, never stays the same.

Referring to Hermann Hesse’s book “The Glass Bead Game” in which the glass bead game is closely related to music making we wanted to built a glass beat game in which a player or a group of players can make music by putting marbles on a game board. The idea includes building an instrument for simple music making as well as exploring the possibilities of using the setup as a game with rules focusing on topics like sound, music, spatialization, hearing, psychology, tactical behavior and synesthesia. The Game was created by Hanna Schraffenberger, Alwin de Rooij and Arnout Terpstra.

The authorisation given to an Australian company called Coal of Africa Limited (CoAL) to construct an open-cast coal mine, called the Vele Colliery, just outside of the boundaries of the Mapungubwe National Park will affect this fragile natural harmony. To Abraham, "mining and industry is a short term plan, tourism is a long-term plan."
Abraham, like many others, believes that the Mapungubwe region should be preserved and protected from the impacts of infrastructural development, and allowed to remain pristine for generations to come.
Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site is managed by South African National Parks (SANParks) and its partners. The Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area is being developed based on the stipulations of a Memorandum of Understanding between Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe that was signed on 22 June 2006. These are officially mandated programmes in which the South African government, the province and private sector have invested. With the official opening of the Mapungubwe National Park on 24 September 2004, the first of three national objectives for the region was reached. The other two objectives were the area’s listing as a World Heritage Site, which happened in 2003, and the establishment of a Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA).
TFCAs promote conservation and the sustainable use of biological and cultural resources, while also furthering goals of regional peace, co-operation and socio-economic development. Both Transfrontier Parks and Transfrontier Conservation Areas aim to provide jobs and opportunities for revenue generation to local people. By so improving the lives of rural communities it is hoped that they will in turn contribute to biodiversity conservation and demonstrate the economic and social advantages that can be achieved through conservation. This vision of cross-border collaboration realises the Southern African Development Community’s objective of promoting synergy for economic, social and conservation benefit over the subcontinent.
TFCAs contribute to the broader aims of trans-boundary ecosystem management, integration of conservation with development, promotion of regional cooperation and socio-economic development on the southern African sub-continent, while also forming an important part of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD).

It is believed that a highly sophisticated civilisation, which traded with Arabia, Egypt, India and China, existed at Mapungubwe.
The presence of heavy industry in the Mapungubwe area will impact enormously on its tourism and conservation, to such a degree that these activities will have to be reconsidered for the future. South Africa signed a binding document whereby it agreed to be a partner in a trilateral conservation development. In this particular case, we’re going to break with all the protocols, because I know a lot of people that are in the audience, I’ve seen faces, I’ve seen people with reputations in the audience, and I think that all of us can say, unanimously that, Mary probably doesn’t really deeply understand how much impact her singing and her reputation has had in our lives, the way it’s shaped the love that we’ve got for the music. So, ladies and gentlemen, Mary Wilson of The Supremes, come on.

Stuart: So, where to start? Let’s start with a quick question. Mary, I wanted to -
Mary: Well, I need to explain something.
Stuart: Yes, my dear.
Mary: Okay, before we go any further. I’m not the founding - the only founding member of The Supremes, as most of you know. Florence, Diane and Betty McGlown, are the founding members of The Supremes, and I cannot take that credit all myself. So, the people here in the audience understand and know that, so, let’s make that very clear.
Stuart: Well, let’s start with the first question, I was watching you last night in the opening of the exhibition, singing, and sung a couple of songs for us, it was great, and one of the things that struck me is, actually, without any hesitation, I’d forgotten how great a solo singer you are, how great a singer you are. And I wonder if that actually, when we go back to The Supremes, there’s been criticisms in the past, for example, that Diana was actually the least good singer of The Supremes, she had a very specific voice. And I just wanted to get your thoughts about - just describe the different voices that were in The Supremes.
Mary: Well, I don’t think that you can - anyone said that Diane was the least good singer in The Supremes, that’s not true, and I’ve never ever said anything like that. My point was always to sort of bring forward the fact that Florence Ballard was a great singer, and I was also a good singer. So, I think people - and sometimes when we tried to explain or say things like that, people think that you’re saying that the other person is not that good. That was not my point, at all. My point was saying that Florence Ballad was a Gospel, strong singer, Diane was a pop singer and I was kind of, like, the ballad singer, so, we each had our own, you know, good points.
Stuart: And at a time, and in a city, which probably, without any hesitation, you could say was probably, at its time, the greatest musical city in the world, bar none. I mean, if you actually compare and contrast it with the other great regional city of the time, Liverpool, many of the Liverpool acts moved down to London and whatever, but there you were, in Detroit, touring the world, phenomenal place. Just to get some grasp on this, simply your high school alone, who did you go to school with?
Mary: Well, in Detroit, we all kind of grew up in the projects. Detroit was really a small - is, a small town. And Smokey Robinson, I guess, was in the same - lived in the neighbourhood as Diana Ross. I went to high school with some of The Miracles, which was Bobby Rogers. The person that did a lot of singing - or writing, with Smokey Robinson, was Al Gutierrez, Marvin Tarplin, and he and I went to high school together. Florence went to the same high school as some of The Temptations. So, we all came from pretty much the same neighbourhood, even though it was kind of large.
Stuart: And when did you first remember the sense that Mary Wilson had the desire to be a singer? Where did the desire come from?
Mary: Well, you know, people like Little Richard, you know, there was Jackie Wilson, there was Frankie Lyman and The Teenagers was one of my favourite ...
Stuart: He was a bad boy, though, wasn’t he?
Mary: He was a what?
Stuart: He was a bad boy.
Mary: I don’t know, I was too young.
Stuart: No, he was a very bad boy, Mary.
Mary: Well, you know, doctors don’t tell secrets on other doctors. But, we all kind of bad later on. But, yeah, you know, from just - oops, we don’t want to go there right now - but, anyway, when I was born, my mother said that when the doctors spanked me, I started singing. So, I mean, I did that, but I never ever thought that it was different, I thought that everybody woke up in the morning singing. You know, I thought that everyone did that. I didn’t realise, until I became one of the members of The Primettes, that that was something very special. Then I realised that that talent was special, but, prior to that, I would just, you know, woke up and start singing, " ooooooo," you know, whatever, and just ...

THE WARRIORS OF THE THUNDERERS
A young man named Watakwuna sorrowed because of the reverses his people were suffering at the hands of their more powerful enemies. So sad was he that he blackened his face with charcoal and retired to an isolated spot to fast and pray. His entreaties reached the ears of the sun and his lieutenant the Morningstar. According to their instructions, the I'namaki- wuk, or thunderers, took pity on him, and sent him word to come to them.
He was told to take a straight course westward across the ocean until he came to an island of rock projecting high above the surrounding waters.
Here the vision told him he would find the thunderers.
When Watakwuna awoke from his vision he was overjoyed, but yet afraid. He made a sacrifice to the Thunderbrids and to the offering he invited seven pure young men who had never used tobacco or known women. When these youths were gathered in his medicine lodge Watakwuna offered tobacco to the thunderers as a preliminary service and then explained the purpose of the ceremony to his guests, relating his dream and his subsequent fears. The revelation made a profound impression upon the young men, who believed his words, and after some discussion, they resolved to accompany Watak-
wuna on his westward journey to the home of the Ina'makiwuk. Accordingly, the little party, headed by Watakwuna, set forth for the west. The journey was toilsome and the way beset with perils. Often
the adventurers were tempted to turn back, but always, when it seemed as Watakwttna, Club-in-his-hand, a "brave name," one of the type bestowed on valiant
warriors. though human strength and courage could hold out no longer, spirits would appear to them and lure them on, until at length they reached the shore of the Western Ocean. Here they paused, unable to proceed, for they did not know how to go across the water. At this point the thunderers appeared again to Watakwuna in a vision and instructed him to build an elm bark canoe, the first one ever known to man, and the prototype from which all subsequent canoes were modeled.
When the boat was built by Watakwiina and his seven helpers, they launched it and paddled out to sea. They soon passed beyond sight of land, and for days they were frightened because they could see nothing. Yet invisible spirits accompanied and encouraged them until at last they reached their goal. Here were gathered a great number of thunderbirds in human form, waiting for them. As soon asWatakwuna had landed, accompanied by his followers, the chief of the thunderers who was greater and handsomer
than all the others, came forward and addressed him as follows : —
No'se (grandchild) you have come to me according to my command, I was
troubled in my heart when I saw you fasting and suffering, growing light in flesh and thin in body. Now you have gained great honor, I have taken pity on you. I am going to give you this war bundle to use upon the earth. You shall feed it, and give
sacrifices to it for my sake and in my behalf. You shall be empowered to use this thing at your desire. It shall protect you, and your children and grandchildren, so that you and they shall live to see your gray hairs. I command you to use it in the way which I shall make clear to you, and if you obey me, it shall obey you.
Tobacco shall be the chief thing to please it, and when you give it tobacco you will delight us, its masters. You shall take these things which I have here back to the earth again, and when you reach your home, you shall make some others according to my instructions.
Here is an egg, put that in the bundle. Here is a powder, put that in the bundle. These two articles shall enable you to set fire to the earth at your desire. Here is a little bow, the image of an arrow, and a scabbard to carry. Here are all the birds of the air, that are after my kind. They will lend their assistance when trouble overtakes you. Take this red paint along, that you may apply it to your men who accompany you when you go to war, and the sight of it will please me. It will put new life into you and your men. Through my spiritual power I gave you the dream that called you here to see me, through it you shall be able to destroy the enemies
that intend to kill you. You shall conquer, and victory will always be yours. The enemies that you shall slay will be food for me and for the war bundle.
When you return you shall carve my image upon a board and place it in the bundle, in order to please me. You must take two plain square blocks, and upon each of these outline my figure in sacred red paint, one shall represent me as a Great Powered Bird, and one shall represent me as a man with a great lighting-bolt in my hand.
"I am of dual nature. I can change myself into either a bird or a man at will."
(And indeed the Thunder-bird-beings have been known to come to earth in
human form. They have appeared as homely men, short and thick-set, with heavy muscles in their arms and

Referring to Hermann Hesse’s book “The Glass Bead Game” in which the glass bead game is closely related to music making we wanted to built a glass beat game in which a player or a group of players can make music by putting marbles on a game board. The idea includes building an instrument for simple music making as well as exploring the possibilities of using the setup as a game with rules focusing on topics like sound, music, spatialization, hearing, psychology, tactical behavior and synesthesia.
The Game was created by Hanna Schraffenberger, Alwin de Rooij and Arnout Terpstra.

Cette suite a été écrite en 1989. On peut la trouver dans le coffret "Le Jour des Merveilles" (Bayard Musique, Paris, 2009).

Video documentation of a video installation at San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, 2009. Klage/Lament is a four channel installation piece created by Lewis deSoto with Erin Neff (voice). Each channel is a stanza from a poem found in the book "The Glass Bead Game," by Hermann Hesse (1943). The poem is a lament that human life is constantly changeable, never fixed, never at rest. The work is installed in a long fire corridor at the institute. A small aperture lets in natural light through a blue gel. As one walks through the corridor, one encounters four voices singing simultaneously. Because each of the stanzas are time independent of one another, the effect is ever changing. It too, never stays the same.
