A hunter and Army Scout in the early part of his life, he rescues a US Senator and his beautiful daughter, Louisa Frederici. Cody is portrayed as someone who admires and respects the Indians and is a good friend of Yellow Hand who will eventually become Chief of the Cheyenne. Everyone else, including the military, politicians and businessmen on the other hand hate the Indians and are perfectly prepared to trample on their lands and destroy their buffalo hunting grounds. He's eventually forced to fight the Cheyenne however. He's also met a writer, Ned Buntline, who writes about Cody's exploits and he becomes a sensation when he travels East. His career is not assured however, particularly when he attacks those in positions of authority over their maltreatment of the Native American population. He eventually establishes his wild west show that becomes an international sensation.

Quotes:
William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: What killed my son?::Doctor: Diptheria.::William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: What's that?::Doctor: A germ.::William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: Where does it come from?::Doctor: Water systems... and sewage. It's a crowd disease. A disease of civilization.
William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: Mr. President. Ladies and Gentlemen. I was afraid I was going to make a fool of myself in front of you tonight. But that would have been all right, because a man can make a fool of himself when he's off his own stamping grounds. But when a man makes a fool of himself on his own stamping grounds, there's no excuse for him. I don't hold with General Sherman that a good Indian is a dead Indian. From what I've seen, the Indian is a free-born American who'll fight for his folks, for his land and for his living... just like any other American.
Yellow Hand: Men of the Nation. There's a black cloud coming from the east to cover us all. We, the Cheyenne, have called our brothers of the Sioux so we can hear the words about this thing. Yesterday, the buffalo was many as the blades of grass upon the prairie. Today, the buffalo is few as the leaves on an oak tree in winter. The white man has done this thing so the red man will starve. When the buffalo is done, we starve. We'll have no meat to eat, no hide to make tepees, no robes to make beds. Brothers, it's not good for man to hear his woman and children crying. It's a bad thing for a man to starve. There are better ways to die.
Ned Buntline: You know the Indian, Cody, don't you?::William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: Nobody knows the Indian. I've had to fight them since I was fourteen. Pony Express, stage driver, scouting. Indians never do what you'd expect.
William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: When you do an Indian a favor, he never forgets it. But if you do him bad, he never forgets that either.
Louisa Frederici Cody: What is she doing here all alone?::William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: She's just old. When Indians get too old to travel, why they're left behind with a little food and fuel.::Louisa Frederici Cody: To die?::William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: Yeah.::Louisa Frederici Cody: That's terrible! Can't we do something for her?::William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: It's the way of the people. There's nothing we can do.::Louisa Frederici Cody: Here am I, going to bring a new life into the world, and leaving an old woman to die.::William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: That's nature's way, Louisa. When anything becomes too old to be useful, it's just pushed aside.::Louisa Frederici Cody: But it shouldn't be! That's why we have civilization!
Yellow Hand: Now there is no debt and no friendship between us. If we meet in battle, as a brave of the Cheyenne, I will take the scalp of Pahashka and hang it on his lodge pole.::William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: It may be easier to hang it than to take it, Yellow Hand.
Sgt. Chips: I've been waiting for you. Somebody has written you a letter.::William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: Who, me?::Sgt. Chips: That's right, my boy. Who in the world would be writing to you?::William F. 'Buffalo Bill' Cody: I don't know, but if you give me the letter, I'll find out.::Sgt. Chips: You'll get yours in your proper turn. The mail is delivered according to rank. And there's plenty ranker than you!
Sen. Frederici: Well, that's it! That's my letter you telling you I was coming. I mailed it a week before I left.::Sgt. Chips: That's nothing. Private Mulligan didn't get the letter with his reprieve until days after they hung him. Come to think of it, he never did get it.
Louisa Frederici Cody: Who are you? [the woman turns around] An Indian! What do you mean by breaking into my room and stealing my clothes?::Dawn Starlight: I-I didn't come here to steal::Louisa Frederici Cody: Maybe you Indians have different word for it, but that my dress you have on::Dawn Starlight: I tell you I didn't come here to steal

In 1897 he was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy. His charge up San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War in 1898 is re-created. He becomes vice president in March 1901 and assumes the presidency when 'William McKinley (I)' (qv) is assassinated six months later. According to the narrator, Roosevelt refused to be beholden to political bosses, doing what he believed to be right for the American people.

Quotes:
Theodore Roosevelt: I would rather have this administration fail because it enforced the laws than succeed by violating them.
Theodore Roosevelt: [to representatives of real estate interests] If improving the living conditions of the poor means working against you, I've only just begun.
Theodore Roosevelt: [to President McKinley]... only that nation that's prepared for peace that knows how to fight. Speak softly but carry a big stick!
Theodore Roosevelt: A man always has two reasons for what he does, a good one and the real one.
Theodore Roosevelt: [after being nominated as Vice-President] I feel like a man who's been sentenced to solitary confinement.
Senator Platt: Of course, you'll always consult us on policy.::Theodore Roosevelt: Always!... and then Ill do exactly what I think is right!
Theodore Roosevelt: I shall treat every man on his merits as a man. The doors to the White House will swing open just as easily for the poor as for the rich. The labor unions and the corporations will have a Square Deal, but, most important, the private citizen will have a Square Deal!
[first lines]::Narrator: Theodore Roosevelt: soldier, president, statesman, American. In 1895 Roosevelt became police commissioner of New York City, declared war on corrupt politicians.
[last lines]::Theodore Roosevelt: [dictates speech to his secretary] There can be no compromise in the fight for Americanism. I am confident that our people will work hand-in-hand with any public man who, in good faith, does all that is possible to see that the United States so conducts herself as a nation as to conserve the honor, the institutions, and the peaceful welfare of her own citizens. Our next business will be to help guarantee the peace of justice for the world at large. There cannot be, there must no be, a repetition of the crime against Belgium. I am antibrutality. I should protest this strongly against wrongdoing by any foreign power. The little nations of the earth have a right to live, and if civilization is to endure, the great nations must respect that right. Let us unite in the one great endeavor of achieving an enduring peace with all the world. But let us not forget that the surest promise of that peace lies in our constant preparedness to meet all eventualities from without, and to combat and destroy all subversive elements working from within. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says that he is an American and seeks to promote foreign isms within our borders is not a true American. We have room for but one flag, the American flag. We have room for but one language, the language of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. And we have room for but one loyalty, and that is loyalty to the American people.

Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907. "In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American ... There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, is not an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag ... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language ... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." THEODORE ROOSEVELT 1907

In this episode, Theodore Roosevelt becomes President of the United States, wins the Nobel Peace Prize, and seizes control of the Panama Canal Zone.
Transcript:
In 1901, the assassination of William McKinley thrust Vice President Theodore Roosevelt into the role of president of an emerging power. Roosevelt, unwilling to allow European nations to dominate international political and economic affairs, was determined to make the United States an even more powerful force on the world stage.
In 1905, building on the achievements of the Open Door notes, Roosevelt managed to mediate a peace negotiation between Japan and Russia. The two nations had been fighting for control of possessions in Manchuria and Korea, and the successful negotiations won Roosevelt the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize.
As Roosevelt’s presidency continued on, America’s role in international affairs continued to grow. France, Great Britain, and the United States had all envisioned a world in which a canal could provide a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. As early as 1850, Great Britain and the United States had agreed to share operating rights of such a canal if it could be built. However, in 1901, Britain granted exclusive rights of such a canal to the US.
In the late 1800s, France had attempted to build a canal in Panama, but their efforts had failed. In 1903, President Roosevelt and Congress purchased the rights to this Panama route for $40 million. Roosevelt saw the completion of a canal in Panama as a military and economic necessity for the US, and he was determined to make it happen.
Panama, at the time, was controlled by neighboring Colombia. When negotiations with Colombia to build the canal failed, Roosevelt worked closely with French officials to orchestrate a revolution in Panama. When the fight for Panamanian independence broke out, Roosevelt sent Marines and nearly a dozen warships to Panama to secure control of the territory in the Isthmus of Panama. Fifteen days later, the Hay–Bunau-Varilla Treaty was signed with Panama, granting the US control of the Canal Zone area. The US agreed to pay Panama $10 million, plus an annual rent of $250,000 for control the area.
Construction of the canal began in 1904, and the completion of the project remains one of the world’s greatest engineering feats. More than 43,400 workers battled diseases such as malaria and yellow fever, unfavorable terrain, hot, humid weather, and torrential rainfall. Work was not completed until 1913, and some 5,600 workers lost their lives due to accidents and disease. The total cost for building the canal was $380 million.
The canal opened on August 15, 1914, and more than 1,000 ships passed through during the first year of operation. However, US efforts in helping to stir up the rebellion in Panama, along with aggressive naval actions in the area, greatly damaged America’s image in Latin America. Resentment of the United States would simmer in the region for decades to come.

Railroads and Coal
As a Progressive, Theodore Roosevelt was willing to use the power of his office to regulate large businesses. In addition to breaking up large trusts, Roosevelt used other means to weaken the power of corporate bosses, intervene on the behalf of workers, and protect the American consumer.
In 1902, 140,000 coalminers went on strike in Pennsylvania. The workers were demanding a 20 percent raise, a nine-hour workday, and the right to form a union. Yet, the owners of the mines refused to bargain. As the strike wore on, the nation’s coal reserves, which the US economy depended on, began to run low. Roosevelt determined to intervene.
President Roosevelt called the leaders of both sides to the White House in an attempt to work out an agreement. When talks began breaking down, Roosevelt threatened to use the power of the federal government to seize control of the mines for the benefit of the nation. Faced with the president’s threat, the laborers and mine operators agreed to settle the dispute via arbitration (allowing a third party to mediate). As part of the settlement, miners were granted a 10 percent pay hike and a nine-hour workday. In order to receive the benefits, the miners had to give up their demands to set up a closed shop (all workers had to belong to the union) as well as their right to go on strike again for the following three years. Roosevelt’s actions established the precedent of the US government intervening in labor disputes whenever the welfare of the nation was threatened.
Another area where Roosevelt used the power of his office to regulate big business was the railroad industry. The nation was largely dependent on railroads to move people and goods, but powerful barons (wealthy businessmen) and trusts controlled much of America’s tracks. High rates, corruption, and bribery were common.
In 1887, Congress had attempted to prevent railroad owners from colluding together to fix prices with the passage of the Interstate Commerce Act. The Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) was established to enforce the act, but the agency held little enforcement power. Roosevelt argued that more federal regulation was needed to protect consumers.
In 1903, Congress passed the Elkins Act, which prohibited railroad officials from giving rebates to shippers for using their railroads, as it had been a common form of bribery as well as a way to target competitors. In addition, railroads were forbidden to change rates without notifying the public in advance.
In 1906, Congress added on the Hepburn Act, which limited a company’s ability to selectively distribute free railroad passes. The act also allowed the ICC to set a maximum rate companies could charge. The bills signed into law by Roosevelt greatly increased the power of the federal government to regulate railroads within the United States.

Welcome to the MAKING OF A NATION -- American history in VOA Special English.
Theodore Roosevelt was president of the United States during the early years of the twentieth century. He was a forceful leader. His national policies led to social reforms and federal protection of nature.
His foreign policy led to greater American involvement in world events.
This week in our series, Kay Gallant and Harry Monroe continue the story of the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt.
Roosevelt said the United States would guarantee repayment of loans made to Latin American countries.
He did this to prevent European countries from using the issue of non-payment as an excuse to seize new territory in the Western Hemisphere.
Some Latin American nations were in serious economic trouble. Venezuela was one.
At that time, Venezuela owed 1,000,000s of dollars to Britain and Germany. The Venezuelan ruler refused to make payments on the loans. Britain and Germany decided to use force to get the money.
Their ships began blocking Venezuela's ports. When they began shelling coastal areas, President Roosevelt intervened. He urged them to let the international court of arbitration at The Hague settle the dispute.
They agreed. And the blockade of Venezuela ended.
Less than 2 years later, a similar financial problem arose in the Dominican Republic. Revolutions and dictatorships there prevented re-payment of foreign loans.
The United States offered a solution. It would take over collection of import taxes at ports in the Dominican Republic. 45% of the money would be paid to the Dominican government. The other 55% would be used to repay loans. The Dominican Republic agreed. The plan succeeded.
Some countries in Latin America and the Caribbean questioned the right of the United States to act as policeman for the Western Hemisphere. But none openly opposed President Roosevelt's policy.
Theodore Roosevelt had become president after the assassination of President William McKinley. He completed the 3 three years of McKinley's term. Then he was ready to be elected in his own right.
He won easily.
During his new term in office, President Roosevelt was able to get Congress to approve two major new laws. One was the Hepburn Act. This law gave the Interstate Commerce Commission power to limit how much railroads could charge for transporting goods. The purpose was to keep the cost of railroad transportation reasonable.
The other new law was the Pure Food and Drug Act. This law declared it illegal to make or sell foods and medicines containing harmful chemicals. The purpose was to protect the health of all Americans.
President Roosevelt's most important foreign policy success came as a result of a war between Russia and Japan.
Roosevelt invited Japanese and Russian diplomats to meet with him in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He told them his greatest hope and prayer was for them to find a just and lasting peace quickly. A quick settlement, however, was not easy.
Japan demanded !$600,000,000 for war damages. It also wanted Sakhalin Island. Russia rejected both demands. It had agreed to give up southern Manchuria. Russia would give up nothing else.
Negotiations lasted many days. President Roosevelt became more and more angry when neither side would compromise. But he remained calm and kept the talks going.
Later, he "What I really wanted to do was give an angry shout, jump up, and knock their heads together."
Finally, Roosevelt made a secret appeal to the Emperor of Japan. He asked the Emperor to drop demands for money and for Sakhalin Island. He warned that Russia was ready to fight again if the peace talks failed.
The Emperor agreed to drop the demand for money. But, he still demanded half of Sakhalin Island. Russia agreed to this compromise. The two sides signed a peace treaty.
Theodore Roosevelt received the Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating an end to the Russian-Japanese war.
At the same time, tense relations developed between American citizens and Japanese immigrants in California.
Poor Japanese immigrants were willing to work for low pay. As a result, Americans lost jobs. They protested. Then school officials in San Francisco barred Japanese children from attending school with white children.
President Roosevelt opposed the decision. He asked the officials to lift the ban. In exchange, he agreed to ask Japan to stop its poor farmers and laborers from going to live in America.
Japan said it would. The understanding became known as the Gentleman's Agreement.
Roosevelt worked hard to improve America's relations with Japan. Yet he made clear that the United States would defend its interests in Asia and the Pacific.

Summary
Film is Roosevelt Memorial Association compilation of footage from TR's 1913-1914 trip to South America during which he combined a series of lectures with an expedition in the Amazon Valley of Brazil to collect zoological specimens. The Roosevelt group was combined with a group of Brazilian scientists under the leadership of Col. Candido Mariano da Silva Rondon to explore the course of the uncharted Rio da Dúvida, the River of Doubt. In 1926 George M. Dyott, an English explorer, was asked by the Roosevelt Memorial Association to retrace TR's voyage down the River of Doubt and to film his trip in order to supplement the footage from the 1914 trip.
There are shots of Roosevelt's party on board the Vandyck; left to right are: Anthony Fiala, George K. Cherrie, an ornithologist, Father John A. Zahm, a friend of TR's, TR, Kermit Roosevelt, Frank Harper, TR's secretary, and Leo E. Miller, a mammalogist. TR and his wife, Edith Roosevelt, alight from a small steamer and are met by a uniformed official; location may be Rio de Janeiro. At what is probably the Rio de Janeiro harbor area, there are shots of TR walking, preceded by reporters; TR, with three unidentified men, waves from a carriage; TR is seated in a trolley car, the man next to him (closest to camera) may be Edwin V. Morgan, American Ambassador to Brazil; long shot of the Monroe Palace.
On the steps of the Guanabara Palace, Lauro S. Müller, Brazilian Foreign Minister, TR, and others pose. Shots of TR and party aboard a small launch, probably on the Sepotuba River. Views of riverbank, probably from the Nyoac, Col. Rondon's river steamer, which carried the Roosevelt-Rondon expedition up the Paraguay River; men disembark as the Nyoac lands. Views of the group leaving the Nyoac to participate in a reception at the Fazenda São João on the Cuyabá (Cuiabá) River.
Shots of TR preparing to go hunting and returning with his party, possibly at the ranch, Las Palmeiras, on the Taquary (Taquari) River; TR, Kermit, and Col. Rondon pose with a jaguar skin. Views of Kermit, Miller, Col. Rondon, and Cherrie on the Nyoac; TR shoots crocodiles from the boat. Views of wildlife and plantlife are included. Scenes depict the exacting journey down the river. There is a still photo of TR, Col. Rondon, and others with a group of Nhambiquara (Nambicuara) Indians near the Juruena River.
Although the Roosevelt party did not see any Indians on the River of Doubt, their presence in the bordering jungle was evident; the man examining a broken branch may be Commander Dyott; the Dyott party did meet Indians and there is footage of several who were called Arara Indians by Dyott. The Roosevelt-Rondon group reached the end of the unknown portion of the River Apr. 15, 1914.
TR, suffering from illness and injuries incurred during his long journey, returned from Manaos (Manaus) to New York; the group of men on the riverboat traveling on the Madeira River are probably members of Fiala's group rather than TR's (Fiala left the Roosevelt-Rondon party at Utiarity to descend the Papagaio, the Juruena, and the Tapajós Rivers).

Scenes of African peoples and of TR's safari party, all probably filmed in British East Africa (Kenya) in 1909. View of TR planting a tree in front of trading company building, possibly located in Mombasa, long shot of busy amusement area in Kenyan seaport of Mombasa, including shot of ferris wheel filled with Swahilis; shots, taken from observation platform on train engine, of plains along the Uganda Railway, with herdsmen who are probably Masai and railroad workers visible along tracks; train pulls into small community; women who are probably Masai, incorrectly identified by interior title as Zulu, gather water at spring, accompanied by children.
Rainmaker dances in ritual ceremony, surrounded by Swahilis; members of unknown tribe draw water from a well, with large thatched structure in background; views of Masai men, women, and children in kraal, with clear shots of mud houses; TR and his party appear in group of Kikuyu and/or Masai tribesmen; women who are probably Masai, incorrectly identified by interior title as Zulu, form ceremonial circle on open plain; TR and members of his party examine a gun in the presence of African tribesmen; unidentified tribesmen pose individually for camera at close range, with campsite visible in background; at campsite porters work busily, either setting up or breaking camp, with TR briefly visible; view of Kikuyu and/or Masai dance, incorrectly identified by interior title as Zulu dance, in honor of TR's visit; Roosevelt party crosses stream, with porters carrying gear and safari members across water toward camera.

The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, A Memoir of Ronald Reagan, Theodore Rex (2002)

Edmund Morris (born May 27, 1940) is an American writer best known for his biographies of United States Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan.
Morris was born in Nairobi, Kenya, the son of South African parents May (Dowling) and Eric Edmund Morris, an airline pilot.[1] He received his early, British-influenced education in Kenya and then studied music, art, and literature at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa. Dropping out of college in 1961, he worked in the retail advertising department of a menswear store in Durban. Most of the brochures and advertisements he designed and wrote were for the Zulu market, and he later claimed that this early training in "making words move merchandise" was invaluable to the formation of his literary style.[2] Moving to Britain in 1964, he abandoned dreams of becoming a concert pianist and was employed as a copywriter in the London office of Foote, Cone & Belding, an American advertising agency. In 1966 he married Sylvia Jukes, an English teacher and writer, and emigrated with her to the United States two years later.[3]
Morris's first book, The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, was published when he was thirty-nine. The first volume of what would eventually become a trilogy on the life of the 26th president, it won the 1980 Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award for biography.[4]
In 1981, Ronald Reagan became President of the United States and was impressed by a reading of The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt. Senator Mark O. Hatfield of Oregon and Librarian of Congress Daniel J. Boorstin urged Reagan aides to appoint Morris as the president's official biographer. Morris met with Reagan on several occasions in 1981-1983, but was reluctant to put aside work on Theodore Rex, the second volume of his life of Roosevelt.[5] However, in 1985 Morris recognized that Reagan had become a figure of high historical importance, and signed a $3 million contract with Random House to write his authorized biography. He reached a private agreement with the president and first lady that granted him regular interviews with them and their children, as well as unlimited access to the White House, by means of a pass that made him a non-governmental observer of the administration. This "fly-on-the-wall" privilege was made doubly unusual by Reagan's willingness to let Morris write his biography without any editorial control.[6]
Morris spent the next fourteen years researching and writing the story of Reagan's life in Washington D.C. and Santa Monica, California. He continued to see the former president in retirement, and worked extensively in the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, enjoying special access to Reagan's personal papers. His manuscript, prepared under conditions of great secrecy, was edited by Robert Loomis, executive editor at Random House.[7] The biography's long gestation was the result of a radical change in narrative method, caused by Morris's frustration with what he has described as Reagan's lack of "curiosity about himself."[8] Morris confided this frustration in 1989 to a group of fellow scholars at the University of Virginia's Miller Center of Public Affairs. His remarks were leaked to the press and gave rise to rumors that Morris did not understand his subject.[9]
In 1999 Morris published Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Reagan. The book caused an international sensation because it was presented, without explanation or apology, as a work of nonfiction by an imaginary author.[10] Although the story of Reagan's life was authentic and documented with 153 pages of notes, the parallel "story" of its author, one "Arthur Edmund Morris" born in Chicago in 1912, enraged many critics and readers who had been expecting a conventional presidential biography.[11] Dutch rose quickly to No. 2 on the New York Times Best Seller list. But despite a minority of favorable reviews, and the endorsements of three of Reagan's children,[12] reactions to it were generally so negative that it soon fell off the list.[13]
Morris explained in many interviews that his book's unique narrative form — a memoir written by a close observer of whom Reagan is never really aware — was a literary device reflecting the essentially thespian nature of his subject. Reagan, he said, was an enigma to anyone who sought to explain him by orthodox means. Widely beloved, the man had no close friends; seemingly passive and gentle, he yet exerted unstoppable force; although his id was formidable, he had no personal vanity. "He was truly one of the strangest men who's ever lived," Morris told Lesley Stahl on CBS's 60 Minutes. "Nobody around him understood him. I, every person I interviewed, almost without exception, eventually would say, 'You know, I could never really figure him out.'"

Richard Nixon and President Theodore Roosevelt's daughter Alice Roosevelt Longworth discuss the 1972 election. Longworth praises Nixon's campaign, and they briefly compare the 1972 and 1912 elections. Nixon updates her on the current Vietnam War negotiations. The 86-year-old Longworth insists that she is still "mean as a hornet." They both praise First Lady Pat Nixon's role in the campaign and note how much times have changed for women in the public eye. Theodore Roosevelt was one of Nixon's most admired political heroes.

The Roosevelt family is a prominent American business and political family whose members include United States Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt, as well as First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. The Roosevelts were among the earliest to settle in the Dutch colonial settlement of New Amsterdam, in what would later become New York.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roosevelt_family
Anna Eleanor Roosevelt (/ˈɛlɨnɔr ˈroʊzəvɛlt/; October 11, 1884 – November 7, 1962) was an American politician.[1] She was the longest-serving First Lady of the United States, holding the post from March 1933 to April 1945 during her husband President Franklin D. Roosevelt's four terms in office.[1] President Harry S. Truman later called her the "First Lady of the World" in tribute to her human rights achievements.[2]
A member of the Roosevelt and Livingston families, Eleanor had an unhappy childhood, suffering the deaths of both parents and one of her brothers at a young age. At 15, she attended Allenwood Academy in London, and was deeply influenced by its feminist headmistress Marie Souvestre. Returning to the U.S., she married her fifth cousin once removed, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, in 1905. The Roosevelts' marriage was complicated from the beginning by Franklin's controlling mother, Sara, and after discovering Franklin's affair with Lucy Mercer in 1918, Eleanor resolved to seek fulfillment in a public life of her own. She persuaded Franklin to stay in politics following his partial paralysis from polio, and began to give speeches and campaign in his place. After Franklin's election as Governor of New York, Eleanor regularly made public appearances on his behalf. She also shaped the role of First Lady during her tenure and beyond.
Though widely respected in her later years, Roosevelt was a controversial First Lady for her outspokenness, particularly her stance on racial issues. She was the first presidential spouse to hold press conferences, write a syndicated newspaper column, and speak at a national convention. On a few occasions, she publicly disagreed with her husband's policies. She launched an experimental community at Arthurdale, West Virginia, for the families of unemployed miners, later widely regarded as a failure. She advocated for expanded roles for women in the workplace, the civil rights of African Americans and Asian Americans, and the rights of World War II refugees.
Following her husband's death, Eleanor remained active in politics for the rest of her life. She pressed the US to join and support the United Nations and became one of its first delegates. She served as the first chair of the UN Commission on Human Rights, and oversaw the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Later she chaired the John F. Kennedy administration's Presidential Commission on the Status of Women. By the time of her death, she was regarded as "one of the most esteemed women in the world" and "the object of almost universal respect".[3] In 1999, she was ranked in the top ten of Gallup's List of Most Widely Admired People of the 20th Century.[4]

Alice Lee Roosevelt Longworth (February 12, 1884 – February 20, 1980) was an American writer and prominent socialite. She was the oldest child of U.S. President Theodore "T.R." Roosevelt, Jr. (1858–1919). She was the only child of Roosevelt and his first wife, Alice Hathaway Lee (1861–84).
Alice led an unconventional and controversial life. Her marriage to Representative Nicholas Longworth III (Republican-Ohio), a party leader and 43rd Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, was shaky, and her only child Paulina was a result of her affair with Senator William Edgar Borah of Idaho. She temporarily became a Democrat during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, and jokingly boasted in a 60 Minutes interview with Eric Sevareid, televised on February 17, 1974, that she was a "hedonist".
