Part of the Gordon McCann Folk Music Collection at the Missouri State Libraries’ Special Collections and Archives. This recording includes tape 1 sides A and B of an interview with Howard Gold. This interview conducted by Gordon McCann in Howard Gold's home, south of Chesapeake, Missouri. This tape was recorded on September 30, 1974. There is a third and fourth voice, one presumably is Mrs. Gold, Howard's wife, and the other is unidentified. The audio does not begin until 0:26 Howard says was born and raised south of Union City, Missouri. He was 63 at the time of this interview. Howard tells: A story about his uncle dying in the process of getting a doctor on July 7, 1934 Where he grew up, where his father (George W. Gold) grew up and grandfather lived. About going to school in Union City, Missouri. About his father being a blacksmith. He says his father died in 1937. He says in 1922-23 his father George Gold owned a blacksmith shop in Hooten Town, Missouri on the James River. He tells memories he remembers about life on his father's shop. Howard tells memories he has about a baptist preacher that came to the shop about everyday. Howard tells another story. There was a man that was a bronco buster when he was smaller. Howard tells about life during the Great Depression like cutting timber and selling it on the side of the road for money to feed his family. He also tells a story about a man named Alfred Mosier that lived around Republic, Missouri that was old enough to be Howard's father and they went to school together. Howard talks about fighting, telephones. Howard talks about buying his house in 1945, what the house looked like when he bought it, and his struggle to pay for it. ..............................end tape 1 side A.............................. Tape 1 side B Howard begins talking about a tool that his father built, yet no one could tell him what it was used for. He says that old timers call it a Grubbin' hoe. He eventually tells that they used it to cut corn stalks. Howard also tells about his old occupations. Stacking bundle grain. He tells about the doctors in Clever, Missouri. He said that the family doctor went to school with Howard's father. He tells that his mother was an asthmatic. For fun Howard says he would go to square dances, play parties, school, church, and Sunday school. He says that he would play the fiddle and the guitar. Howard discusses what the play parties would consisted of. However he says that his family were very strict. The rest is general conversation between Howard, Gordon, and an unidentified third voice throughout the interview. These recordings are made available for research purposes.
