Progressive Era Mini-Documentary Project Script for Ms. Kibtya's Period 5 Class: Muckrakers of the Progressive Era improved the conditions of American society by exposing corruption. Two of these muckrakers were Upton Sinclair and Lincoln Steffens. Upton Sinclair was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on September 20th, 1878. He enjoyed writing stories for newspapers and magazines. In 1904, Sinclair was commissioned by an editor of a socialist journal to write about the immigrant workers at Chicago meat packing industries. Sinclair spent seven weeks observing the conditions of meat packing plants in Chicago. He focused his attention on the workers and business structure. The conditions in which the animals were brought, slaughtered, cut, and boiled were absolutely filthy. He also noticed that the workers were forced to do strenuous labor in unsafe working conditions. For example, people who worked in the pickling room had their fingers eaten off by acid and men fell in vats of boiling meat and often never came out. Also, if an employee became hurt or ill, they were automatically unemployed. Sinclair recounted the dreadful conditions of the meat packing plants in his novel, The Jungle. After its publication in 1906, it became an immediate success and was written in 17 languages. Readers were outraged and deeply concerned for their health. As a result, the government intervened and passed the Pure Food and Drugs Act along with the Meat Inspection Act in 1906, and the working conditions of factories improved substantially. Lincoln Steffens was born on April 6, 1866 in San Francisco. In the United States, he began working for the New York City newspaper. After nine years of working for the newspaper, he started a new job as managing editor of McClure’s Magazine in 1901. When Joseph W. Folk started a huge investigation into the city’s corruption, Steffens started working with him. This was Steffens’s exposure to government corruption. Rather than explicitly presenting the corruption, he wanted to make people aware of the public’s agreement in wrongdoing by letting corruption resume. He did this to try to make the public face their obligation in the perseverance of corruption. Steffens saw the corruption of politicians by businessmen looking for special privileges. He investigated the corruption in government in American cities for being an advocate of the Soviet Union. He even went to the Soviet Union to witness the society go through revolutionary change. In his work with McClure’s, Steffens wrote The Shame of the Cities and other books, which explored subjects like child labor, prisons, religion, corporations, insurance companies, and urban political corruption. His works were highly praised. The demands of the public led to reform of city government and gave power to the gradual ideas of a city commission, or a city manager system, as well as other changes to the national political climate. The efforts of these and other social reformers of the Progressive Era greatly improved the order of American society. Who knows what America would be without the social transformations of the Progressive Era.

THE JUNGLE by Upton Sinclair - FULL AudioBook | GreatestAudioBooks.com P1 of 2 - The Jungle is a 1906 novel written by the American journalist and novelist Upton Sinclair (1878–1968). Sinclair wrote the novel to portray the harsh conditions and exploited lives of immigrants in the United States in Chicago and similar industrialized cities. However, most readers were more concerned with his exposure of health violations and unsanitary practices in the American meatpacking industry during the early 20th century, based on an investigation he did for a socialist newspaper. The book depicts working class poverty, the lack of social supports, harsh and unpleasant living and working conditions, and a hopelessness among many workers. These elements are contrasted with the deeply rooted corruption of people in power. A review by the writer Jack London called it, "the Uncle Tom's Cabin of wage slavery". Sinclair was considered a muckraker, or journalist who exposed corruption in government and business. He first published the novel in serial form in 1905, in the Socialist newspaper, Appeal to Reason, between February 25, 1905 and November 4, 1905. In 1904, Sinclair had spent seven weeks gathering information while working incognito in the meatpacking plants of the Chicago stockyards for the newspaper. It was published as a book on February 26, 1906, by Doubleday and in a subscribers' edition. The main character in the book is Jurgis Rudkus, a Lithuanian immigrant trying to make ends meet in Chicago. The book begins with his and Ona's wedding feast. He and his family live near the stockyards and meatpacking district, where many immigrants work who don't know much English. He takes a job at Brown's slaughterhouse. Rudkus had thought the US would offer more freedom, but he finds working conditions harsh. He and his young wife struggle to survive. They fall deeply into debt and are prey to con men. The story follows their worsening condition in life and their struggle to overcome the hardships. Upton Sinclair intended to expose "the inferno of exploitation [of the typical American factory worker at the turn of the 20th Century]," but the reading public fixed on food safety as the novel's most pressing issue. Winston Churchill praised the book in a review. While at first largely dismissive of Sinclair's work, after reading The Jungle President Theodore Roosevelt felt compelled to take action to regulate the food industry's quality standards for food safety. Ironically, Sinclair's primary intention was to bring attention to the plight of American factory workers. He stated: "I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach." When it was published in serial form in 1905, it was a full third longer than the censored, commercial edition published in book form the following year. That expurgated commercial edition edited out much of the ethnic flavor of the original, as well as some of the goriest descriptions of the meat-packing industry and much of Sinclair's most pointed social and political commentary. The text of this new edition is as it appeared in the original uncensored edition of 1905. It contains the full 36 chapters as originally published, rather than the 31 of the expurgated edition. A new foreword describes the discovery in the 1980s of the original edition and its subsequent suppression, and a new introduction places the novel in historical context by explaining the pattern of censorship in the shorter commercial edition.

There he encounters a new culture and its dealings with death; he also discovers another revolution - and his own body. Peter Greenaway depicts Eisenstein as an eccentric artist who travels to Mexico filled with the hubris of being an internationally celebrated star director. Once there, he gets into difficulties with his American financier, the novelist Upton Sinclair. At the same time he begins, in the simultaneously joyful and threatening foreign land, to re-evaluate his homeland and the Stalinist regime. And, in doing so, he undergoes the transition from a conceptual filmmaker into an artist fascinated by the human condition. Under his gaze, the signs, impressions, religious and pagan symbols of Mexican culture assemble themselves anew.Making use of extreme close-ups, splitscreens and a dramatic montage - all to enact the transformation of a hero who presents himself as a tragic clown - Greenaway deliberately quotes and modifies Eisenstein's own cinematic tools. Scene by scene the film gets closer to Eisenstein the man, who finds himself surprised by an unexpected desire.

Apple and IBM’s enterprise partnership has yielded 10 new apps, including one that targets business travellers and others that make use of predictive analytics and iBeacons. The companies said last July they were working together to build apps for industries like health care, retail, and insurance. IBM also said it would sell and support Apple hardware ... Its dark side was exposed in Upton Sinclair’s “The Jungle.” After World War II, however, the need for such large central slaughtering facilities became obsolete. They closed for good in 1971.
