The Bulgars (also Bulghars, Bulgari, Bolgars, Bolghars, Bolgari; Proto-Bulgarians) were semi-nomadic warrior tribes of Turkic extraction who flourished in the Pontic-Caspian steppe and the Volga region during the 7th century. Emerging as nomadic equestrians in the Volga-Ural region, according to some researchers their roots can be traced to Central Asia. During their westward migration across the Eurasian steppe the Bulgars absorbed other ethnic groups and cultural influences, including Hunnic, Iranian and Indo-European. Modern genetic research on Central Asian Turkic people and ethnic groups related to the Bulgars points to an affiliation with western Eurasian and European populations. The Bulgars spoke a Turkic language, i.e. Bulgar language of Oghuric branch. They preserved military titles, organization and customs of Eurasian steppes, as well as pagan shamanism and belief in the sky deity Tangra.
The Bulgars became semi-sedentary during the 7th century in the Pontic-Caspian steppe, establishing the polity of Old Great Bulgaria c. 635, which was absorbed by the Khazar Empire in 668. In c. 679 Khan Asparukh conquered Scythia Minor, opening access to Moesia, and established the First Bulgarian Empire, which was Slavicized, thus forming modern Bulgarians. The remaining Pontic Bulgars migrated in the 7th century to the Volga River, where they founded the Volga Bulgaria; they preserved their identity well into the 13th century. The Volga Tatars and Chuvash people claim to be originated from the Volga Bulgars.
The etymology of the ethnonym Bulgar is not completely understood and difficult to trace back earlier than the 4th century AD.
It is generally believed to derive from the Turkic bulğha (to stir, mix, disturb, confuse). From the time of Wilhelm Tomaschek (1873), it was considered Common Turkic bulga- or bulya (to mix, to become mixed) and consonant suffix -r (mixed). Talat Tekin interpreted bulgar to mean "mixing" rather than "mixed". Both Gyula Németh and Peter Benjamin Golden initially advocated the "mixed race" theory, but later, like Paul Pelliot, considered that "to incite", "rebel", or "to produce a state of disorder", i.e. the "disturbers", would be a suitable name for the nomads.
Among the many other theories, D. Detschev supported a Germanic interpretation meaning combative people, attributed by the Gepids and Ostrogoths to the descendants of the European Huns, and G. A. Keramopulos associated the burgi with the Roman limes. Theorists also speculated that the ethnonym is related to the city name of Balkh in Bactria, and the river Volga (yiylga, "moisture"), while Zeki Velidi Togan considered the unattested form bel-gur or bil-gur to be from balağur (five Oğhur).
Németh identified, through oğur, an etymological association between the Kutrigurs (Kuturgur Quturğur *Toqur(o)ğur toqur; "nine" in Proto-Bulgaric; toquz in Common Turkic) and Utigurs (Uturgur Uturğur utur/otur; "thirty" in Proto-Bulgaric; otuz in Common Turkic) as Oğuric tribes, with the ethnonym Bulgar as their spreading adjective. Karatay interpreted gur/gor as "country", and noted the Tekin derivation of gur from the Altaic suffix -gir, which is related to the word yir, meaning "earth, place". Generally, modern scholars consider the tribal terms oğuz or oğur to be derived from Turkic *og/uq, meaning "kinship or being akin to". The terms initially were not the same, as oq/ogsiz meant "arrow", while oğul meant "offspring, child, son", oğuš/uğuš was "tribe, clan", and the verb oğša-/oqša meant "to be like, resemble".
Karatay considered the Kutrigurs and Utigurs to be two related, ancestral people, and prominent tribes later in the Bulgaric union, but different from the Bulgars.
Golden considered the origin of the Kutrigurs and Utigurs obscure and their relationship to the Onoğurs and Bulgars who lived in the same region, or in its vicinity, as unclear. He noted the assumption of the two tribes being related to the Šarağurs (Oğhur. šara, "White Oğhurs"), and that according to Procopius they were two Hunnic tribal unions of Cimmerians descent. The reason later Byzantine sources frequently linked the names Onoğurs and Bulgars is also unclear.

Kazan TATARS / Volga BULGARS. Kazan Tatar song "Tugan yak" (NATIVE COUNTRY). Republic of Tatarstan of Russian Federation. Music and culture of Kazan Tatars. Tatarstan is one the most powerful republics of Russia with the great degree of autonomy. Kazan Tatars, formerly known as Bulgars (Bulghars) speak Turkic language of Qipchak group, very similiar to Crimean Tatar (spoken in south Ukraine), Nogai (ancient Cumans of south Ukraine and of Hungarian puszta / Kunsag province), Turkish, Kazakh, Bashqir, Azeri, Uzbek. Unlike Turks, Tatars use Cyrillic script. Most of Volga Tatars are Moslems but many are Orthodox Christians.
--------------------------------------------------------
As a nation, Kazan Tatars are a great mixture of peoples (they say the very name "Bulgar" means "mixed") and officially consist of two major subgroups:
1-st subgroup of Volga Tatars: western Mishars (Mazhars-Meshchera) - remnants of turko-ugric Magyars (Magyars were originally Turkic tribe from north Kazakhstan who mixed with Ugrians coming from northerly Perm region). These Mishars also absorbed a number of local warlike scytho-sarmatian Burtasses (Beehive Alans / Ossetians) and Suasses (River Alans / Ossetians) who lived along Volga basin - that's why they have a lot of paternal R1a group. The dominant were Turkic (Qipchak) speaking Magyar tribe (Magyar tribe of north Kazkahstan are quite mongoloid) and their language is a modern western Tatar (Mishar) dialect. 80% of Tatars who live in Moscow are mainly Mishars. Mishars also have some admixture from Volga Finns (Mordvin related tribe) evident in birch-shoes / birch weaven artefacts.
2-nd subgroup of Volga Tatars: eastern Kazan Tatars (Bulgars proper) who are the dominant group. It is believed that Bulgars were originally also a Scytho-Sarmatian tribe, later tatarized / turcosized. Thats why many Tatars have pure European look and paternal R1a goup (Tatar women clothing is very similiar to Gilakis of north Iran and Lemkos of Ukraine, all of same scytho-sarmatian stock), while others have mongoloid features (from invading Ugrian & Turco-Magyar tribes in 8th cen., and later again 12th cen from powerful Mongol invasion who formed Golden Horde centered on Volga.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Modern Russia (originally Muscovite tsardom) is often regarded as successor of Golden horde politically. But ethnically and genetically just Russians of Ivanovo and Ryazan regions (historic Meshchera, original home of Mishar Tatars) are related to Mishar Tatars (and Hungarians themselves, having the most similar genetic Slavic-Mishar pool).
Modern Hungary, however was inhabited by Slavic tribes (Great Moravia) before arrival of turco-ugrian Magyars (Mazhars) from Volga, these Pannonian Slavs never moved but became part of Hungarian nation. Thats why they look European.
Similiar case was in Bulgaria where Volga Bulgars settled too mixing with Slavs and adopting their language. Otherwise said -original Bulgarians are related to eastern Tatars (Bulgars), while original Hungarians are related to western Tatars (Mishars / Mozhars).
Ukrainains too absorbed much of Qipchak culture by assimilating Torks (bearers of Ukrainian last name Torchenko are clear mongoloids) and many Cumans (much evident in cossack culture) related tribes of Qipchak tongue, as Ukrainian Crimean Tatars speak same Qipchak tongue as Kazan Tatars).
That is why light mongoloid features are found among many Ukrainians, Hungarians, Russians.
-------------------------------------------
Paternal genetics: Tatars have haplogroups I, J2, G and plenty of R1a (Scytho-Sarmatian / East Slavic) and even L.

The Crimea tartar woman Sivil had to leave her country, her house and her land on the Crimea, which has been built by her parents, because of the Russian invasion in March 2014. The 30 year old dentist had to flee with her 4 year old daughter Jasmin because of discriminations, humiliations, and threats to death by russian and pro-russian people, which have been brought in many busses from Russia to the Ukrainian peninsula in order to destabilize this area and terrorize the people. Sivil is a highly educated and studied lady. She has thought, that in the west of the Ukraine there are fascists and terrorists ruling te country. She thought this because of the russian propaganda in Crimean and russian television. When she came to the west of the Ukraine, she experienced the opposite: Warm hearted, free people, who help each other, no discrimitation at all. And now she is shocked, that propaganda can change ones mind so deeply. And she is in deep pain, that now the old traumas of deportation and violation of Crimean Tartars and Ukrainian people by Russian forces are been repeated, as it was in history.
