A penniless song writer, Larry Earl, is convinced he is going places in shown business, and convinces Mary, an assistant at an orphanage, to marry him. Fifteen months later they are still in love, but broke as Larry writes songs that won't sell and loses one job after another one. He stops to watch a group of newsboys singing and dancing, and decides to organize them into the greatest kid act to ever hit vaudeville. Mary persuades Proctor, a big theatrical manager, to book the act, and they are a big hit. Then Larry and his publicity agent, "Speed" King, launch a big publicity stunt---a talent train in which they travel across country holding auditions for young performers. Back in New York, Carlotta Salvini, an ex-OPera singer, brings in her talented fourteen-year-old-daughter, Jane, who has an amazing voice. Larry, to get the mother out of the way, offers Carlotta a forty-week vaudeville tour, and then goes to work to make a star out of Jane, by building Braodway's first all-kiddie musical revue around her. Opening night has "School Days" as the first act and the show and Jane are a big hit...until the Gerry Society, organized to protect working children, reminds Larry there is a law against children working after 10 p m., and the show closes. Larry's future appears dim at best.

No to any violation of Iraq’s sovereignty… This is the main reaction by Iraqi politicians to Turkish parliament’s recent decision to allow the country’s army to intervene in Iraq in case of what the parliamentarians called terrorist terrors coming from Iraq. She also called on UN Security Council to take appropriate measures in case of any Turkish intervention in Iraq’s internal affairs. Other Iraqi politicians reject as baseless justifications of such decision saying Iraq is capable enough to tackle terrorist attacks inside its soil and there is no need for foreign intervention. Turkish parliament decision comes as according to Iraqis there is no legal justification for it within international laws.Experts warn that moves like this will pave the way for other countries to intervene in Iraqi's internal affairs. The Iraqi government and people say they are opposed to any foreign military intervention in their country, considering it a breach of Iraq's sovereignty. They believe that Iraqi armed forces and government can defend the country and emerge victorious in the war on terrorism.

Turkish military officials say the country’s prime minister is shipping arms to terrorists via Syria-bound trucks operated by Turkey’s national intelligence service. The revelations come after Premier Ahmet Davutoglu banned media from reporting on some trucks searched by Gendarmerie General Command. The vehicles were carrying missiles, mortar rounds, and anti-aircraft ammunition. Gendarmerie said the trucks were carrying weapons and supplies to al-Qaeda and ISIL militants. Davutoglu also removed the public prosecutor who had ordered the search. Thirteen soldiers involved in the search have been charged with espionage and are facing 20-year prison terms. Turkey’s parliament has extended by one year a mandate for military operations in Iraq and Syria, allegedly against the positions of Daesh terrorists and Kurdish militants. The current mandate expires on October 2. It allows foreign forces to use Turkish territory as a transit route in operations against ISIL Takfiri terrorists. It also authorizes the US to use Turkey’s Incirlik air base to launch airstrikes on the terrorists’ positions. AP Television footage showed military vehicles moving in convoys through the streets. Meanwhile several thousand other Turkish troops crossed into northern Iraq early on Wednesday to chase Kurdish guerrillas who operate from bases there, Turkish security officials told The Associated Press. Two senior security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the media, said the raid was limited in scope and that it did not constitute the kind of large incursion that Turkish leaders have been discussing in recent weeks. One of the officials told The Associated Press by telephone that it was not a major offensive and the number of troops was not in the tens of thousands. The official is based in southeast Turkey, where the military has been battling separatist Kurdish rebels since they took up arms in 1984. The officials did not say where the Turkish force was operating in northern Iraq, nor did he say how long they would be there. The officials said any confrontation with Iraqi Kurdish groups, who have warned against a Turkish incursion, could trigger a larger cross-border operation. An official at military headquarters in Ankara declined to confirm or deny the report that Turkish troops had entered Iraq. Turkish troops have staged so-called "hot pursuits" into northern Iraq in the past, usually after citing reports of attacks against Turkish soldiers in the border region. They have sometimes shelled suspected rebel positions across the border. Turkish authorities rarely acknowledge such military operations, which were more frequent before the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. Later Turkey's private NTV television quoted Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul as saying reports of a cross-border operation were false. Gul was quoted as saying there was no such thing as an entry to another country and that if such a thing happened he would announce it. He reportedly also said that Turkey was in a war with terror and would do whatever was necessary to fight terrorism. Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said the government has not seen any major operations along the border. He told the Associated Press in a phone interview that there had been intermittent shelling, for instance, attacks, certain violations, minor violations on the border which were documented and reported back to the Turkish side, but that no major operations along the border had been witnessed. Zebari said Iraq was aware of the Turkish troops buildup on the border, and the Iraqi government position was that it would not accept or tolerate any military incursion into Iraqi territories. George Bagus, an adviser to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki also said his office had no knowledge about such an operation and declined to comment further. Turkey, which has yet to make an official statement on Pope Francis' comments, summoned the ambassador to protest over the description of the events as "genocide", the official said, declining to be identified. Muslim Turkey accepts that many Christian Armenians died in clashes with Ottoman soldiers beginning in 1915, when Armenia was part of the empire ruled from Istanbul, but denies hundreds of thousands were killed and that this amounted to genocide. Addressing worshipers in Saint Peter's Basilica on Sunday, the Pope made his remarks during a mass commemorating the 100th anniversary of the death of some 1.5 million Armenians who died under harsh circumstances imposed on them by the Ottoman Empire during World War I. Armenians have struggled for decades to gain recognition of the atrocity as the intended destruction of their people, a claim that Turkey has vigorously disputed and attributes to the period's sectarian and communal fighting. "It is necessary, and indeed a duty, to honor their memory, for whenever memory fades, it means that evil allows wounds to fester,” Francis said. “Concealing or denying evil is like allowing a wound to keep bleeding without bandaging it."

Turkish police officers disrupted this year's Istanbul gay pride march, violently dispersing peaceful crowds as they gathered at the city's iconic Taksim Square. Istanbul's annual march has been taking place in the city for over a decade, and the numbers of those attending have increased throughout the years. The police actions on Sunday were an apparent response to the sudden banning of the event by Istanbul governor's office, which reportedly decided to outlaw the march as it coincided with the holy month of Ramadan. Undeterred, crowds began congregating on nearby streets, only to be fired upon with tear gas, rubber bullets, and water cannons by the police. Marchers told VICE News how they were attacked and injured by the heavy-handed police actions. Despite this, pride marchers continued to gather on the streets until the early hours of Monday morning. Turkey Mine Tragedy Protesters Battle Police

Police in Turkey have used water cannon against protesters amid growing fury over the mining disaster which killed at least 282 workers. Violence flared on the streets of Istanbul as grief turned to anger in the wake of the underground explosion at the mine in Soma, some 155 miles (250km) south of the city. The number of those killed is expected to rise as families lose hope of finding alive any of the estimated 150 miners still feared trapped, with the last survivor brought out more than 24 hours ago. The first funerals have been held for those killed in the underground blast Emergency workers have been fighting fire and toxic fumes in their frantic search at the scene. Row upon row of graves have been dug to bury those killed in Turkey's worst ever mining disaster. In the meantime, security was tightened at the site for a visit of the country's President Abdullah Gul, with officials anxious to avoid a repeat of the anger which greeted Turkey's Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday, when his car was mobbed by protesters. A protester is kicked by an adviser to Turkey's PM during trouble in Soma Pictures have emerged of that visit, showing Yusuf Yerkel, an adviser to the PM, kicking a demonstrator as he is held on the ground by police officers. Miners are holding a strike in protest at the disaster in the face of mounting anger over poor industry safety standards. The major accident has become a focal point of wider dissent against the ruling administration, which has been in power for 11 years, with violent clashes in Istanbul and the capital Ankara. The government said 787 people were inside the coal mine at the time of the explosion, and 363 have been rescued including many who were injured. There have been fresh clashes in Turkey following the disaster But some families have cast doubt on the official figures. Those still trapped are thought to be some 1.2 miles (2km) below the surface and 2.5 miles (4km) from the mine entrance. As thousands of anxious relatives waited for news of Turkey's worst mining disaster, Mr Erdogan was accused of ignoring warnings over safety at the coal pit. A convoy containing his car was attacked by crowds and he was forced to seek refuge in a supermarket, surrounded by police. Scores of graves have been dug close to the mine to bury the dead With feelings running high, protesters shouted for him to resign and said he was a "murderer" and a "thief". And Mr Erdogan's attempt to downplay the disaster at a news conference did little to defuse tensions. He said accidents happened in other countries and even pointed to cases in 19th century Britain. Mr Erdogan said: "These types of things in mines happen all the time. "It's in its nature. It's not possible for there to be no accidents in mines. Of course we were deeply pained by the extent here." He declared three days of national mourning and ordered flags to be lowered to half-mast. The public backlash over the disaster could threaten Mr Erdogan's presidential ambitions ahead of the August election.

Turkish troops evacuate soldiers guarding the Suleyman Shah tomb in Syria Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu announced Sunday Turkish troops have completed a mission to evacuate 38 soldiers guarding the tomb of Suleyman Shah in Syria. A hundred vehicles and hundres of soldiers were involved in the mission, he said. The mission was the first ground incursion by Turkish troops into Syria. There were no clashes but one soldier was killed in an accident. The tomb holds the remains of the grandfather of the founder of the Ottoman Empire and has been considered Turkish sovereign territory since 1921. The Turkish government said late last year Islamic State militants were advancing on the mauseoleum and had repeatedly vowed to defend it.

Döner Kebab: Tasty Turkish inspired German Street food in Berlin

When it comes to street food in Berlin I'm pleased to say you've got plenty of options to choose from. My personal two favorites are Currywurst and Doner Kebab. The latter one has a lot to do with the large Turkish population in the city. What is fascinating is that this Turkish staple has been perfected with German taste buds in mind. Yes, you get your lamb/chicken and typical fixings (lettuce, tomatoes); however, toppings such as cabbage, onions and grilled veggies also make an appearance. It's one of the tastiest and cheapest snacks around. Find one inside of a metro station or street corner. Have you tried a doner kebab before? Döner Kebab: Tasty Turkish inspired German Street food in Berlin Travel Video Transcript: So we have made it to Berlin and that means today we are going to introduce you to a really popular fast food snack that you can get here in the city - the Döner Kebab. So doner kebab. You're probably thinking isn't that Turkish? And yes, it is Turkish but Germany has a huge Turkish population and that means that they brought their recipes and their food over and they've actually adapted the doner kebab to fit the German taste when it comes to the cuisine. So this would be considered a German doner kebab, so I'm going to bite right in because this looks so good and we've been filming it for too long. We sure have. Let's bite here. Messy. So so good. I'm losing toppings. And there is a bee trying to steal my food. So the place where we picked it up you could choose from a number of different toppings. They had chicken and veal and they had it right on that big rump where you know they're shaving it off. A skewer! Oh, the skewer it is so good. And I'll show you some of the toppings here if you take a look. So you have things like tomatoes, lettuce, other things like that. Of course this is the chicken. But what makes it kind of unique for Germany here is that it has cabbage. Cabbage and onions. And onions too. Because Germans really like that. Yeah. Alright, time for my first bite. Oh my gosh. He dropped it all over the place. All over the place. I have an onion on my wrist. Is it good? Yeah, it is really good. And the nice thing is that this is a really cheap meal. And you can share it with someone. So another thing I'm noticing while I'm eating this. Is that the donair kebab actually has grilled veggies. And that is not something I've ever had anywhere else before. So I'm kind of wondering if that is also one of the German adaptations or if it is done in Turkey. And in terms of the sauces. You can get a really hot and spicy sauce. They have a few different herb sauces, garlic sauce and a yogurt based sauce. So lots of variety there. Yeah, I'm just going to get back to eating this because it is so good. We ended up getting the hot sauce. Yeah. And price point for that delicious doner kebab. So that was only 3.50 Euros and what is really cool about this is that you can find these kebabs almost everywhere. We picked this one up at a metro station. You can also find them on the street. And we highly recommend you go out and grab one while you're in Berlin. This is part of our Travel in Germany series. Turkish hospitality is one of the most amazing aspects of Turkish culture. People will often offer their guests food and they will not take "no" as an answer! Also try to keep your consumption of tea reasonable, because there will be tea wherever you go! In this lesson we will look at ways we can offer a friend, who is a guest at our place, food, drinks and other miscellaneous items, such as slippers. Yes, slippers! Just remember to take off your shoes when entering someone's house. Make your host happy. Make me happy :) Today's phrase is "ister misin?". This phrase works if you address the person you are talking to as "sen", rather than "siz". (the two forms of the pronoun "you") That means you can use this phrase with your friends, relatives, or people who are obviously younger than you (don't use it in formal settings!). If you are young yourself, then you can use it with other teenagers/kids. If you are offering food, the phrase "yer misin?" is more exact. Similarly, if you are offering a drink, "içer misin?" is a good one to know.

Mothers should not put any career before motherhood, Turkish Health Minister Mehmet Müezzinoğlu has said during a visit to the first baby born in 2015 in Istanbul early on Jan. 1. Müezzinoğlu and Istanbul Gov. Vasip Şahin visited the baby and congratulated her parents at a hospital in Zeytinburnu while also giving advice to mothers. “Mothers have the career of motherhood, which cannot be possessed by anyone else in the world. Mothers should not put another career other than motherhood at the center of their lives. They should put raising good generations at the center of their attention,” Müezzinoğlu said. The minister also urged mothers to have normal deliveries rather than using a C-section, saying medicine should be used for extraordinary situations. “Every mother’s natural structure is created for normal delivery. Normal delivery should be used. Using medicine is for extraordinary situations. We expect doctors to make the best decisions when needed,” he said. Müezzinoğlu also emphasized the importance of breastfeeding. “Nearly 1,150,000 babies are born every year. This is a huge richness for our country,” he added, conveying his good wishes for all babies being born in 2015. Müezzinoğlu also praised the family after learning the new baby, named Meryem Azra, was the couple’s third child. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has consistently exhorted women to have at least three children, while also calling abortion “murder” and railing against Caesarian sections.

With the Black Sea to the north and the Aegean Sea in the west and Mediterranean Sea to the southwest, Turkey is surrounded by Bulgaria and Greece to the west, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia to the northeast, Syria, Iraq and Iran to the southeast. See in Turkey ================ As a general rule, most museums and sites of ancient cities in Turkey are closed on Mondays, although there are numerous exceptions to this. Ancient ruins and architectural heritage At the crossroads of civilizations, all parts of Turkey are full of a mindblowing number of ancient ruins. Hittites, the first indigenous people that rose to found a state in Anatolia—although there is one certain Çatalhöyük preceding them, the earliest settlement ever found to the date in Turkey—left the proof of their existence at the ruins of Hattuşaş, their capital. Ancient Greeks and closely following Romans left their mark mostly in Aegean and Mediterranean Regions, leaving behind the marble ruins of hundreds of cities, temples, and monuments. Some are largely restored to their former glory, such as Ephesus as well as numerous others along the Aegean coast which are on the checklist of most travellers to Turkey, along with some more obscure ones off the beaten path such as Aphrodisias near Denizli, and Aizonai. In the meantime, some other indigenous peoples, such as Lycians, were carving beautiful tombs—many of which are fairly well preserved and can be seen all around Lycia—for their dearly departed ones onto the rocky hillsides. Legendary Troy stands out as an example of different civilizations literally living on the top of each other. While what is visible today is clearly Hellenistic, the place has its roots as Hittite Wilusa, and later re-built many times over by Ancient Greeks. Perhaps the most unique "architectural" heritage in the country, some of the Cappadocian cave houses and churches carved into "fairy chimneys" and underground cities (in a literal sense!) date back to early Christians hiding from persecution. Successors of Romans, the Byzantines, broke new ground with more ambitious projects, culminating in grand Hagia Sophia of Istanbul, built in 537, and which had the distinction of being the largest cathedral in the world for almost a thousand years. Most of Byzantine heritage intact today is found in Marmara Region, especially in Istanbul, although a stray monastery or two dating back to the era can be found in almost any part of the country. Seljuks, the first ever Turkic state to be founded in Asia Minor, built most of their monuments—which incorporates large majestic portals and heavily delicate stonework, reminiscent of some landmarks in parts of Asia—in major centres of the time in Eastern and Central Anatolia, especially in Konya, their capital. Ottomans, who had considered themselves as a Balkan state until their demise, built most of their landmarks in Balkans and the natural extension of Balkans within today's Turkey—Marmara Region—just like the Byzantines, whom the Ottomans inspired to in so many ways. Most of the earlier Ottoman monuments were built in Bursa, which have little Byzantine and comperatively large Seljuk influences, and later, when the dynasty moved to Europe, in Edirne, some of the major landmarks of which exhibit some kind of "transitional" and fairly experimental style. It wasn't until the Fall of Constantinople that the Ottomans adopted Byzantine architecture almost full scale with some adjustments. However, the Ottoman imperial architecture possibly reached its zenith not in Istanbul, but in Edirne—in the form of Selimiye Mosque, a work of Sinan, the great Ottoman architecture of 16th century. 19th century brought back the Greek and Roman taste of architectural styles, so there was a huge explosion of neo-classical architecture, as much fashionable in Turkey as in the much of the rest of the world at that time. Galata side of Istanbul, Izmir (though unfortunately most of which was lost to the big fire of 1922), and numerous towns along the coasts, one most prominent and well preserved example being Ayvalık, quickly filled with elegant neo-classical buildings.

Ankara is the capital of the Republic of Turkey and this once Anatolian provincial backwater is today one of the country’s most modern cities and is a vibrant world metropolis. The biggest mosque in Turkey is the Kocatepe Camii which is both a symbol of the devoutness of the Turkish people as well as being an important centre of communication for the entire city. Turkey is a country of many faces, with fairytale-like mosques and palaces, legendary ancient cities and fascinating landscapes. It is a link between Asia and Europe, between East and West and an historic bridge between both Orient and Occident.

Turkey is now fighting two very different battles at the same time. Turkish fighter jets have been hitting PKK positions in Iraq for days. The Kurdish PKK has been fighting for greater autonomy within Turkey for 30 years, and more than 40,000 Turkish and Kurdish soldiers and civilians have died during the struggle. Between 30 and 40 million Kurds live in adjoining regions of Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria. Meanwhile, at the same time, Turkey is now also bombing ISIL bases in Syria. The battles become complicated when you take into account the group at the forefront of the international fight against ISIL is another Kurdish group; the YPG. Raids, arrests, threats and deportation - journalism is becoming increasingly dangerous in Turkey as the government clamps down on the media covering stories it wants ignored. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been accused of a heavy-handed approach with journalists after one of the country's largest media houses - Dogan Media Group - was investigated for alleged "terrorism propaganda." The probe came on the heels of the Nokta news magazine being raided and it's latest edition being banned; and three journalists from the New York-based Vice News being arrested in Diyarbakir for quote "working for a terrorist organisation". At a time when entire cities in the southeast - Diyarbakir and Cizre - have been placed under curfew, Erdogan's latest crackdown has made a military offensive against Kurdish separatists increasingly difficult to cover. Discussing Turkey’s deteriorating state of press freedom are: Idil Engindeniz, a media scholar at Galatasaray University; Bekir Hazar, the host at TV show Yaz Boz; Cevheri Guven, Editor at Nokta magazine; and Murat Bayram, a reporter for Kurdistan 24. Other media stories on our radar this week: journalists keep getting arrested and detained in Thailand; Charlie Hebdo's controversial cartoon poking fun at the death of Alan Kurdi; and the murder of a journalist in Colombia - that was caught on camera. Bosnia's divided media Twenty years ago this December, a three-year-long civil war ended in Bosnia and Herzegovina with a complex power sharing arrangement that split the country in two. The two entities: the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina administered by Bosnian Muslims; and the Republika Srpska, administered by Serbs; created a complicated political structure that also divided the media landscape. In an effort to transcend the ethnic divide, journalists are banding together to combat a range of political and economic pressures. The Listening Post's Flo Phillips reports from Sarajevo on their efforts and the problems Bosnian journalists face on a daily basis.

Street Food Around The World - Istanbul, Turkey Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey, constituting the country's economic, cultural, and historical heart. Istanbul is a transcontinental city in Eurasia, with its commercial and historical centre lying on the European side and about a third of its population living on the Asian side of Eurasia. With a population of 14.4 million, the city forms the largest urban agglomeration in Europe[d] as well as the largest in the Middle East, and the sixth-largest city proper in the world. Istanbul's vast area of 5,343 square kilometers (2,063 sq mi) is coterminous with Istanbul Province, of which the city is the administrative capital. Istanbul straddles the Bosphorus strait in northwestern Turkey, between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea. Turkish cuisine is largely the heritage of Ottoman cuisine, which can be described as a fusion and refinement of Central Asian, Caucasian, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Balkan cuisines. The country's position between the East and the Mediterranean Sea helped the Turks gain complete control of major trade routes, and an ideal environment allowed plants and animals to flourish. Turkish cuisine was well established by the mid-1400s, the beginning of the Ottoman Empire's six hundred-year reign. Yogurt salads, fish in olive oil, and stuffed and wrapped vegetables became Turkish staples. The empire, eventually spanning from Austria to northern Africa, used its land and water routes to import exotic ingredients from all over the world. By the end of the 1500s, the Ottoman court housed over 1,400 live-in cooks and passed laws regulating the freshness of food. Since the fall of the empire in World War I (1914–1918) and the establishment of the Turkish Republic, foreign food such as French hollandaise sauce and western fast food have made their way into the modern Turkish diet.

Recruited from Christian populations of the Balkans and trained in the Muslim faith and culture of the Turks, the Janissaries formed a warrior caste, distinguished by military skill and unequivocal loyalty to the Sultan. Essentially Christian warrior-monks, the Knights’ mission was to rid the Holy Land of Muslims. Usually of noble birth, the knights adhered to a strict moral code of poverty, chastity and obedience. Janissary starts at 00:10 The Janissaries were elite infantry units that formed the Ottoman Sultan's household troops and bodyguards. Knights Templar starts at 23:37 The Knights Templar were among the most wealthy and powerful of the Western Christian military orders and were among the most prominent actors of the Christian finance. Much of what we know of ancient history is the history of militaries: their conquests, their movements, and their technological innovations. There are many reasons for this. Kingdoms and empires, the central units of control in the ancient world, could only be maintained through military force. Due to limited agricultural ability, there were relatively few areas that could support large communities, so fighting was common. Weapons and armor, designed to be sturdy, tended to last longer than other artifacts, and thus a great deal of surviving artifacts recovered tend to fall in this category as they are more likely to survive. Weapons and armor were also mass-produced to a scale that makes them quite plentiful throughout history, and thus more likely to be found in archaeological digs.
