Of MSNBC, he said, ""MSNBC is here. They're overwhelmed. They've never seen an audience this big before." WASHINGTON (AP) — On at least one night a year President Barack Obama and the journalists who cover him try to find something nice — and something funny — to say about each other. The annual dinner of the White House Correspondents' Association has become an annual tradition in the nation's capital, promising a black-tie evening of humor and celebrity gazing. The dinner attracts an array of journalists, government officials, politicians and media personalities as it raises money for college scholarships. Obama and first lady Michelle Obama arrived Saturday evening at the Washington Hilton Hotel. The president was expected to speak after dinner but ahead of the featured entertainer, comic actor Joel McHale, the star of the NBC series "Community." The correspondents' dinner has often come at key moments of Obama's presidency. In 2011, Obama showed up the day before special operations troops killed Osama bin Laden. Last year's dinner came nearly two weeks after the deadly Boston Marathon. "And I don't think, you know, either he or I can make predictions about what's going to happen tomorrow or the next year."

Januar 2014, 22.45 Uhr, sagte Barack Obama über seine "Beziehung von Freundschaft und Vertrauen" zu Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel: "Ich muss und darf diese Beziehung nicht durch Überwachungsmaßnahmen beschädigen, die unsere vertrauensvolle Kommunikation behindern. Solange ich Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten bin, muss sich die deutsche Kanzlerin darüber keine Sorgen machen." Die deutsche Regierungschefin und er seien "in Fragen der Außenpolitik vielleicht nicht immer einer Meinung, das ist aber kein Grund abzuhören", so der US Präsident. Obama erklärte, dass die Überwachungsmöglichkeiten der US-Geheimdienste "über die Fähigkeiten vieler anderer Staaten hinausgehen" und dass daraus eine "besondere Verantwortung der USA erwächst". Der US-Präsident stellte aber klar, dass die US-Geheimdienste weiterhin Daten sammeln werden, die man einerseits "zur Wahrung der nationalen Sicherheit" benötige, andererseits mit ihnen "auch für die Sicherheit der Verbündeten" sorge. Erstmals bestätigte Obama, dass die Datensammlung auch strategische Gründe habe: "Wozu brauchen wir Nachrichten- oder Geheimdienste, wenn sie nur die Dinge herausbringen, die Sie im SPIEGEL oder in der New York Times nachlesen können? Per definitionem haben diese Dienste die Aufgabe herauszufinden, was die Leute vorhaben, was in ihrem Kopf vorgeht, was sie beabsichtigen. Das unterstützt unsere diplomatischen und politischen Ziele." Für die Enttäuschung vieler Deutscher äußerte der US-Präsident Verständnis. Er habe klare Ziele, wie die Befriedung von Kriegen, den wirtschaftlichen Wandel und den Klimaschutz, aber er lenke "einen Ozeanriesen" und "kein Rennboot", sagte er im ZDF. Obama Doubles Down During Taped O'Reilly Interview: Fox Is 'Absolutely' Unfair to Me by Noah Rothman | 8:21 pm, February 3rd, 2014 video In a pre-Super Bowl interview with Fox News Channel host Bill O'Reilly, President Barack Obama went after the host and his employer for investigating issues like the White House's response to the Benghazi attack and the Internal Revenue Service's undue targeting of conservative groups. On Monday, O'Reilly played portions of his interview with Obama that were not broadcast on Sunday which revealed details of the president's thinking on the Keystone XL Pipeline, the cultural issues facing African-American families, and how Fox News covers the White House. O'Reilly asked Obama about the large number of children being born to unwed black mothers. "Why isn't there a campaign to address that problem very explicitly?" he asked. "Actually, Bill, we address it explicitly all the time," Obama replied. "So, whether it's getting publicity or not is a whole different question." O'Reilly said that he does not see the federal government acting to address this issue. Obama replied that the public and private sector are focused on this problem. "There is an economic component to it as well, though," he said. Obama added that this is a problem that is increasingly being seen in "white, working-class homes." Turning to the issue of Fox News Channel's coverage of the president, O'Reilly asked Obama if he thought he was unfair in his coverage of the president. "Absolutely," Obama replied. "Of course you are, Bill. But I like you anyway." "I think self-reliance is alive and well in America," the president added. "I think the problem is people don't see as many opportunities to get ahead."
