The thirty-nine-year-old mayor of Florence is on his way to becoming Italy\'s youngest-ever prime minister.
Matteo Renzi received a mandate from Italian President Giorgio Napolitano on Monday to form a new government after Enrico Letta stepped down as prime minister on Friday.
Letta was ousted by his own Democratic Party, which called on Renzi to fill the post.
Renzi, a highly popular figure within the party, has laid out an ambitious plan to revitalize the Italian economy.
Renzi was never elected as a member of parliament and will now have to have his nomination confirmed by the president before he is sworn in as prime minister, which could happen as early as Thursday.

Amid a growing tide of violence, some residents say that Iraqis are again segregating themselves along sectarian lines, prompted by a political crisis pulling at the explosive Sunni-Shiite divide. The enshrined sectarianism has been aggravated by Maliki\'s increasingly authoritarian policies. Baghdad and the rest of Iraq are already highly segregated places. Running from bombs, death squads and their own neighbors at the height of violence in 2006 and 2007, Sunnis and Shiites fled neighborhoods that were once mixed.

That violence and the resulting migrations slowed in 2008, but tensions are again swirling as a power struggle worsens between Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and Sunni politicians who have been largely sidelined since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein. Lucy Kafanov reports from Baghdad and the Anbar province.

In which John Green teaches you about Imperialism. In the late 19th century, the great powers of Europe were running around the world obtaining colonial possessions, especially in Africa and Asia. The United States, which as a young country was especially suceptible to peer pressure, followed along and snapped up some colonies of its own. The US saw that Spain\'s hold on its empire was weak, and like some kind of expansionist predator, it jumped into the Cuban War for Independence and turned it into the Spanish-Cuban-Phillipino-American War, which usually just gets called the Spanish-American War. John will tell you how America turned this war into colonial possessions like Puerto Rico, The Philippines, and almost even got to keep Cuba. The US was busy in the Pacific as well, wresting control of Hawaii from the Hawaiians. All this and more in a globe-trotting, oppressing episode of Crash Course US History.

Our Subbable Dooblydoo message today is from James Williams. He writes, \

The thirty-nine-year-old mayor of Florence is on his way to becoming Italy's youngest-ever prime minister.

The commotion has seemingly intensified upon news of the deaths, with the European Union threatening to punish Ukraine leaders for violently confronting the protesters and the U.S. government "strongly condemning" police violence. Police instead relied on smoke and tear gas, rubber bullets, stun grenades, molotov cocktails and also water cannons. An order banning police use of water cannons in sub-zero temperatures was also lifted, and as reported below, at least three tanks are awaiting departure from Chernihiv just north of Kyiv. The protests supposedly stem from Ukraine President Vicktor Yanukovych's decision to refuse a European Union trade deal in favor of stronger economic ties with Russia. As reported Monday, the protests have largely been organized by USAID, the CIA's National Endowment for Democracy (NED), Freedom House (which has also been alleged to be a CIA connected organization), and George Soros' Open Society Institute. The rally, the biggest this year in a cycle of pro-Europe protests convulsing the former Soviet republic for the past two months, was spurred by the legislation rushed through parliament last week and which the opposition says will lead to a police state. Significantly raising the stakes in the confrontation with President Viktor Yanukovich, opposition leaders announced a plan to gather people's signatures expressing no confidence in his leadership and that of parliament. peace Ukrainian authorities have lifted a ban on the use of water cannons when the temperature is below zero. sochi winter games false flag "Water cannons are being used by police to prevent mass disorders and violations, to repulse attacks on buildings and means of transport, regardless of their affiliation, to protect civilians and for self-defense," reads the amended decree. Pro-European protesters set off fireworks and burn tyres during a rally in central Kiev Police have also been permitted to use smoke, tear gas and stun grenades. Law-enforcement bodies have received permission to restrict the movement of vehicles as well as temporarily prevent citizens' access to particular areas in the city. Retreating activist set alight what appears to be a heap of tires in the center of European Square. The crackdown was launched on mid-day and followed a smaller police action in the morning in Grushchevskovo Street, in which they dismantled a protester barricade and retreated back to initial positions. Interior Ministry members take cover behind shields as pro-European protesters erect a barricade during a rally in Kiev January 22, 2014. (Reuters/Gleb Garanich ) According to latest casualty reports from the Interior Ministry, 195 officers have been injured during the entire period of scuffles, including 84, who had to be admitted to hospitals. There were no immediate accurate reports about the number of injured among the opposition. The crackdown on the opposition comes after two deaths were confirmed among their ranks overnight. Both of the victims suffered fatal traumatic wounds, according to Kiev's chief doctor, Vitaly Mokhorev. Their bodies were brought to a volunteer medical post in Khrushchevskovo Street. "Law enforcement do not carry firearms there," spokesman Sergey Burlakov said. Amid a growing tide of violence, some residents say that Iraqis are again segregating themselves along sectarian lines, prompted by a political crisis pulling at the explosive Sunni-Shiite divide. The enshrined sectarianism has been aggravated by Maliki's increasingly authoritarian policies. In which John Green teaches you about Imperialism. In the late 19th century, the great powers of Europe were running around the world obtaining colonial possessions, especially in Africa and Asia. The United States, which as a young country was especially suceptible to peer pressure, followed along and snapped up some colonies of its own. The US saw that Spain's hold on its empire was weak, and like some kind of expansionist predator, it jumped into the Cuban War for Independence and turned it into the Spanish-Cuban-Phillipino-American War, which usually just gets called the Spanish-American War. NetworkNewsToday: 23 December 2009 - UNTV: United Nations - With one vote against and one abstention, the Security Council approves sanctions against Eritrea for their role in the Somalia conflict. Djiboutian Ambassador Roble Olhaye accuses Eritrea of border violations and warns the Council about "the option of war." With one vote against and one abstention the Security Council approved today (23 December) a resolution leveling sanctions against Eritrea for their role in the Somali conflict. The Ugandan-drafted resolution alleges that Eritrea has aided Islamist insurgents in Somalia and bans the sale of weapons to and from Eritrea and imposes asset freezes and travel restrictions on the Horn of Africa states political and military leaders. Ugandan Ambassador Ruhakana Rugunda told the Council that the measures imposed by todays resolution are targeted and corrective, and expressed hope that Eritrea will take the necessary action to enable the Council to revert the measures in the near future. Djiboutian Ambassador Roble Olhaye addressed the Council and pointed a series of accusations at the government of Eritrea. Quoting Djiboutian President Ismail Omar Guelleh, he warned the Council that unless it took action against the unwarranted provocation and infringement on our territorial integrity, it would leave Djibouti only one option; the option of war. Somali Ambassador Elmi Ahmed Duale, striking a conciliatory note, said that despite all the hostile and negative activities of Eritrea against the Somali government, it was prepared to the enter into serious dialogue with Eritrea to solve any outstanding matters and issues. He cautioned that Eritreas past behaviour casts doubt that it will change its hostilities towards Somalia. Outside the Council, Eritrean Ambassador Araya Desta told reporters that the sanctions imposed on Eritrea are based on fabricated lies concocted by the Ethiopian regime and the US administration. He claimed that Eritreans havent done anything (wrong) and added that the sanctions are irrelevant and based on no concrete evidence. Since Eritrea gained independence in 1993, the country has been involved in two serious conflicts over territory with its neighbors, Ethiopia and Djibouti, and has been accused of supporting Somali rebels in their fight against their government. .......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
