Raymond Lohengrin performs Leo Brouwer's Simple Etudes I,II, III, IV and V. The video intro shows the cover of the second Cuban publication. The first publication was a small booklet about the size of an 8 1/2 folded page (I have the original somewhere) The cover here shows on the lower right the stamp from the Cuban "Ministerio de Cultura" The Leo Brouwer Photo I got from a Cuban Magazine in the 70's Revista Bohemia. Leo BROUWER - Un Dia de Noviembre
I only discovered this popular piece about a year ago, played by our friend Peo Kindgren. I find it hard to believe that Brouwer could compose such different pieces as Danza Carecteristica and Dia de Noviembre, which is extremely melodic. I guess I prefer romantic melodies! Tak...amigo Peo! Feel free to rate! Thanks for your patience: loading is slow, new camera, new settings something went wrong, grrrr.... Vabejas

Un día de noviembre: Leo Brouwer/Humberto Solás
Un día de noviembre: Leo Brouwer/Humberto Solás
A small homage to guitarist/composer Leo Brouwer, who will be 70 on March 1st (b. Havana, 1 March 1939), and to Cuban film director Humberto Solás, who died on 17 September 2008. I'm sorry I couldn't find more or better stills from this (very hard-to-locate) film. Leo Brouwer plays "Un día de noviembre", which he wrote for the sound track of Solás's film by the same name. In the original version, the guitar was accompanied by flute, bass and percussion; Brouwer later transcribed the music for solo guitar. "The golden age of the Cuban cinema, which reached its peak in the late 1960s, seems miles away from the 1970s, when bureaucracy replaced spontaneity. [During] the first half of the 1970s, [defined] as the grey years, censorship was enforced... Solás suffered from this situation with "Un día de noviembre" (One Day in November, 1972), which he considers his most personal work. Though well received abroad, the film would not be viewed in Cuba until 1978. This painful experience led Solás to a crisis serious enough for him to consider giving up filmmaking." (from Julie Amiot, in "The Cinema of Latin America", ed. A Elena, M Díaz López, 2003) Un día de noviembre (1972) Cuba 35 mm 110 min Director: Humberto Solás/ Script: Humberto Solás and Nelson Rodríguez/ Music: Leo Brouwer Recording: La obra guitarrística de Leo Brouwer: Vol. I (Brouwer por Brouwer).
