THE PEN AND THE SWORD - CONVERSATIONS WITH EDWARD SAID
By David Barsamian
Introduction by Eqbal Ahmad, with a new preface by Nubar Hovsepian GATHERED HERE are five wide-ranging interviews with the internationally renowned Palestinian scholar and critic Edward Said (1935–2003). In conversation with David Barsamian, director of Alternative Radio, these interviews cover a broad range of topics, from Said's groundbreaking work of literary scholarship, Orientalism, to music
and popular culture.

These conversations span 1987–94, a pivotal era in the Palestinian liberation movement during which Said testifies with stunning insight and eloquence to the crimes of the Israeli occupation and the betrayals of the PLO leadership. From this collection emerges a history that is both haunting—imbued with knowledge of loss and desire for justice for all Palestinians—and urgently needed to understand today’s conflict. With the original Introduction by Eqbal Ahmad, and a new preface from Nubar Hovsepian, this is an indispensable introduction to one of the twentieth century's foremost critical intellectuals.

At the outset one may ask: why this set of interviews with a writer as prolific and widely known as Edward Said?… One answer is that this book reveals more than any previous work the person behind the name. Most of Edward Said’s writings are scholarly and analytical. The mind is all there but not the man. Some of his books…also contain polemic which give us glimpses of the experiences and feelings which contributed to his formation as a critic of great originality and oppositional outlook. A smaller body of narratives…provide
biographical information but barely reveal the linkages between the writer and his life. David Barsamian’s sympathetic questioning helps span the breach. These interviews are unique for the connections they uncover between the man and his ideas. —FROM THE INTRODUCTION BY EQBAL AHMAD

EDWARD SAID taught English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. His

the Last Sky, and Humanism and Democratic Criticism.
