Special prosecutors say they're seeking to recharge actor Alec Baldwin in the fatal shooting of a cinematographer on a Western movie set in New Mexico in 2021. New Mexico-based prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis said Tuesday they’ll present evidence within two months to a grand jury in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film “Rust." Baldwin was pointing a gun at Hutchins during a rehearsal on the set outside Santa Fe when the gun discharged. Baldwin’s attorneys said Tuesday that “a terrible tragedy” has been turned into what they called a misguided prosecution. Their statement also said they will answer any charges in court.

The war between Israel and Hamas is raising fears about rising hostility across the United States. Experts say crimes against U.S. Jewish communities tend to escalate when conflict erupts in the Middle East, and anti-Muslim crimes also can spike, particularly when Americans are taken hostage or killed. In Illinois, a landlord is accused of attacking a Palestinian American tenant and her son with a knife on Saturday because of their Muslim faith, stabbing the 6-year-old boy to death and seriously injuring the mother. The sheriff, prosecutors and family all said the boy and his mother were targeted for being Muslim.

Curtis Chin has been championing other Asian Americans for over 30 years. He co-founded the Asian American Writers’ Workshop. He's produced documentaries, including one on the racially motivated killing of Vincent Chin in 1983. Now it’s his turn in the spotlight. Curtis Chin has a new memoir, “Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant.” It’s a candid and sometimes funny look at growing up Chinese American in the ’70s and ’80s in Detroit, where his family owned a restaurant. He serves up a menu of anecdotes that touch on racism, gay rights and other social justice issues. But Chin has fond memories of growing up in Detroit and says his is not what he calls a “misery memoir.”

Crowds of mourners in a heavily Palestinian Chicago suburb paid respects to a 6-year-old Muslim boy killed in an alleged hate crime. Authorities revealed new details earlier Monday about the evidence used to charge the family’s landlord with stabbing the child and his mother. Wadea Al-Fayoume died Saturday after being stabbed dozens of times in a brutal attack that drew condemnation from local elected officials to the White House. He had just turned 6. Citing a text message from the boy's mother, a family member told reporters the boy's last words to his mother were: “Mom, I'm fine.” Authorities say the landlord attacked them, upset over the Israel-Hamas war.

Police in Belgium have shot dead a suspected Tunisian extremist accused of killing two Swedish soccer fans in a brazen attack on a Brussels street before disappearing into the night. Belgian Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden said Tuesday that the gun he used had been recovered. Amateur videos showed a man pull up on a scooter and open fire on passersby before chasing them into a building to gun them down. Prosecutors say the man was thought to be inspired by the Islamic State group. After the shooting, authorities shut down a Belgium-Sweden soccer match in the nearby national stadium and held 35,000 fans inside for several hours as a precaution.

Three members of a California family have pleaded guilty to conspiracy for their role in a ring that shipped $600 million worth of stolen catalytic converters from California to New Jersey. Federal prosecutors say brothers Tou Sue Vang and Andrew Vang and their mother Monica Moua of Sacramento were part of a national network of thieves, dealers, and processors who provided the stolen auto anti-smog devices to a metal refinery for more than $600 million. The three acknowledged receiving $38 million for their roles in the scheme. Twenty-one people have been charged in the case. Catalytic converters are easily stolen and contain precious metals that prosecutors say are sometimes worth more than gold.

Thousands of soccer fans were kept inside Belgium’s national stadium for about 2 1/2 hours after a game between Belgium and Sweden was suspended at halftime following the fatal shooting of two Swedes in Brussels before kickoff. The European Championship qualifier on Monday was being played 3 miles (5 kilometers) from the shooting in the Belgian capital. More than 35,000 fans attended the match. With the suspected shooter still at large, Belgian authorities kept fans inside the venue for security reasons before they started the evacuation around midnight local time. Fans chanted “All together, All together” inside the King Baudouin Stadium after the match was halted. Thousands of supporters from both sides shouted “Sweden, Sweden!”

A federal court jury has returned a $13.5 million verdict against the city of Los Angeles in a lawsuit over the death of a man after two police officers used their bodyweight on his back to restrain him. The plaintiff’s attorneys disclosed the verdict at a news conference Monday. They said Friday’s verdict included a finding that the city failed to train officers about the risks of positional and restraint asphyxia. Fifty-year-old Jacobo Juarez Cedillo died five days after the April 2019 encounter with officers at a gas station. The suit was filed by his daughter. The Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office had no comment on the verdict.

A former FTX executive and onetime billionaire has testified against the cryptocurrency exchange’s founder, Sam Bankman-Fried, at his New York City federal fraud trial. Nishad Singh said Monday that his admiration for him faded as he watched excessive spending on investments, property and celebrities precede a $13 billion shortfall that left him feeling “blindsided and horrified.” The former head of engineering at FTX was among Bankman-Fried’s trusted inner circle before the cryptocurrency empire collapsed last November. Bankman-Fried, who has pleaded not guilty, was extradited to the U.S. to face charges. Singh has pleaded guilty to fraud charges in a bid for leniency.

If it wants to survive, Israel surely must annihilate Hamas, this ever more venomous, maniacal Islamic group of terrorists misruling a next-door neighbor, Gaza. But should Hamas’ strong enabling boss, Iran, also be a target as a world hazard on its way to nuclear weaponry? Even with Hamas gone for good, an untethered Iran would still have Hezbollah to boss around and the means of forging new Hamas-style, Palestinian invaders with civilization the final loser.
