Authorities say former NFL player Sergio Brown has been arrested in Southern California nearly a month after the body of his 73-year-old mother was found behind her suburban Chicago home. San Diego County Jail records show Wednesday that the 35-year-old Brown was booked into the facility Tuesday following a “fugitive arrest.” A San Diego District Attorney’s office spokesperson says Brown admitted his identity and waived extradition during a court hearing. WMAQ-TV reports that police said Brown was arrested as he attempted to reenter the United States from Mexico. Authorities began searching for Sergio Brown after Myrtle Brown’s body was found Sept. 17 near a creek in Maywood, west of Chicago. A medical examiner ruled her death a homicide.

Republicans have nominated Rep. Steve Scalise to be the next House speaker. Now they must try to unite their deeply divided majority to elect the conservative in a floor vote after ousting Rep. Kevin McCarthy from the job. In private balloting at the Capitol on Wednesday, House Republicans narrowly pushed aside Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, the Judiciary Committee chairman, in favor of Scalise. But tensions are still running high among Republicans who've brought the House to a standstill with bitter infighting. A floor vote of the whole House is expected. But on Wednesday afternoon, the House was gaveled into a brief session before breaking indefinitely. The next steps are uncertain.

An appeals court says California’s ban on higher-capacity magazines can remain in effect while the state fights a lower court’s ruling that the law is unconstitutional. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeal on Tuesday granted state Attorney General Rob Bonta’s emergency motion for a stay of last month’s ruling by U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez. The appeals court wrote that the attorney general is likely to succeed on merits.  The law bans detachable magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. The September ruling marked the second time Benitez struck down the law. The first time he struck it down was in 2017 and an appeals court ended up reversing his decision.

A jury has delivered a $135 million verdict in a molestation case involving a middle school teacher, determining that negligence by a Southern California school district allowed the abuse of two students during the 1990s. Jurors in Riverside County Superior Court decided Tuesday that the Moreno Valley Unified School District is 90% responsible for the damages, while former teacher Thomas Lee West is 10% responsible. District officials didn’t immediately respond to an email Wednesday seeking comment on the verdict. West was convicted during a criminal trial and is currently serving a 52 years to life sentence.

New York is bidding to put new controls on social media platforms that state leaders say will protect the mental health of younger users. Gov. Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James announced legislation Wednesday that would restrict the ways online platforms like Instagram and YouTube can collect and share children’s personal data. The legislation also would let parents opt their kids out of getting feeds curated by an algorithm, and instead offer content from users they already follow. Supporters say the bills are aimed at protecting children from features that keep them endlessly scrolling and endanger their mental health.

Sam Bankman-Fried's former top executive has blamed the FTX founder of corrupting her values so that she could lie and steal and create false balance sheets. Wednesday was the second day on the witness stand for Caroline Ellison, the prosecution's star witness at Bankman-Fried's federal trial in Manhattan. Ellison pleaded guilty to fraud charges in a cooperation deal in December, when Bankman-Fried was extradited to the United States from the Bahamas after his cryptocurrency businesses collapsed. While testifying Wednesday, Ellison repeatedly blamed Bankman-Fried for directing fraudulent actions aimed at hiding billions of dollars that were being stolen from customers. Bankman-Fried has pleaded not guilty.
