    They had one chance to make him go away weeks later, via impeachment, without saying a word. If convicted, the Senate was poised to hold a separate vote to bar him from office again. All but 7 Republicans voted to acquit, closing that door.

    Republican leaders had an extremely brief window in early November and after 1/6 to make "Trump lost, he's a loser, we don't need to listen to losers" a competing narrative. They passed it up both times and this was the completely inevitable result.
