Geo, gender, and language targeting
Advertisers can target their campaigns to specific geographies. You will configure these options just below the Targeting section when creating a new campaign or editing an old one. You’ll be able to target specific locations or show your ads to all available locations.
To target all available countries, select Show ads in all available locations. To target your campaign only to specific countries and/or regions, select Target specific locations and use the search box below to find and select your locations.
Your geo targeting selections are additive. Ads will show to all locations selected, even if they are from the same geography. For example, if you choose to target your campaign to the United States and California, your ads will show to all users in the United States. If you wish only to target individual regions, be sure to only add those regions are targeting criteria to your campaign.
Note: Small Business advertisers are limited to targeting users in countries where the Twitter SMB Ads product is available. For a list of countries available for targeting by Small Business customers, please reference this article.
Pro Tip: While geo-targeting can put your campaigns in front of a highly specific audience, that specificity limits the reach of your campaign. Maximize your campaign performance by only using geo-targeting when necessary, and using the broadest type of geo-targeting necessary to meet your goal. For example, if you want to reach users in California, your campaign will see greater reach when targeting California at the state level rather than specifying every city or postal code in the state.
To set your campaign’s geo-targeting, follow these steps:
Select whether to show your ads in all available locations or specific locations.
If you are targeting specific locations, type the country, state, metro area or zip code you’d like to target in the search bar. Note: regional targeting options are available for most major markets and will vary by country. Experiment by entering the various states, provinces, subregions and zip codes you are interested in targeting to see available options.
Hit enter/return/tab to autofill the highlighted option from the dropdown menu. In order for your geo-targeting to save correctly, it must appear below the dropdown menu.
To import multiple locations, press the Import Multiple Locations button. A blank screen will populate and you can enter states, regions or countries on separate lines. Separating by commas on the same line will not work. When finished, press the Verify Locations button.
If a location is incorrect, the system will not recognize or save the targeted region.
Advertisers can target their campaigns to the gender of their choice.
Setting up targeting by gender
The campaign settings default to targeting all genders, but you can limit targeting to only one gender if preferred. Underneath device targeting, select the “Limit targeting by gender” and select your preference. We infer gender from information our users share as they use Twitter, including their profile names.
The campaign settings default to targeting all languages, but you can limit targeting to specific languages if preferred. Underneath gender targeting, select “Limit targeting by languages” and select your preference.
