Breaking: Individual Shot by Police in Calgary During Altercation at Anti-Racist Rally

UPDATE 5: The individual who was shot has been named as Morgan Thompson.

UPDATE 2: According to someone who claims to have witnessed the event as it went down, the individual who was shot was throwing things he was picking up off the street at the police, but he didn't appear to have been armed.

UPDATE 3: According to the police, there was a brief struggle when they approached the man, after which he allegedly, "produced a metal pipe." Shots were then fired at the man who last we heard was in critical condition.

We hadn't heard of any efforts by the boneheads in Calgary or London to hold a march, though we wouldn't have been surprised if they had. Anti-Racist Action, however, did hold a rally in Calgary to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Racism. During the rally there was an incident:

A group called Anti-Racist Action Calgary was holding its annual rally against racism to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination near City Hall.

Members say a man approached them yelling “white power.” He then started walking west along Stephen Avenue.

“He was quite angry, yelling quite loud. And he spat on the ground. He didn’t do anything more he was just yelling at them,” said Ryan Wellicome, a SAIT journalism student who was at the rally.

....

“The police got out of a van that was already there and just started to walk towards him just, I think, to make sure he wasn’t going to get aggressive,” explained Sherry Walford, a Mount Royal University student who witnessed the man at the rally.

Police followed the man to a location across the street from the Hyatt Hotel in the back alley of the Palomino bar. A witness in the hotel tells Global News he saw a police van pull up to the alley, and heard several shots fired. Jordan Cummings says he saw police fire a number of shots.

UPDATE 4: There are people claiming that the individual who was shot, and despite shouting "white power" at an anti-racist rally, is not a white supremacist. We aren't sure how much stock we put into these claims at this time as those making the claim did not provide any corroborating details.

In the meantime, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team are looking for witnesses to the shooting.  

“We know there would have been a number of people in the vicinity in the buildings nearby and the buildings surrounding the alley where the officer involved shooting occurred, and also just pedestrians walking nearby,” Susan Hughson, Executive Director of ASIRT said.

Anyone who saw what happened is asked to contact the ASIRT southern office at 403-592-4306.

Over at Stormfront, the speculation has been rampant as folks there embrace the usual conspiracies boneheads are wont to believe. Included in this list here are Kyle McKee who suggests setting up a collection for the man who was shot, Craig Cobb, and Bill Noble (all three, incidentally, have spent significant time in jail for their particular racially-based crimes):

It is interesting when considering these reactions, especially in relation to the shooting of African-American youths in the United Stated, something that one of the individuals posting in this thread alludes to and seems to suggest was a justifiable use of force:

Evidently, "Neart" hasn't read the news as three of the four police officers involved appear to have been in training, thus were not "highly trained." There is also a photo of a pipe which the police allege was used in the incident. 

UPDATE 6: Information about Thompson is still sketchy, but one person posting to Reddit claiming to know the man who was shot is suggesting that he was not a white supremacist:

I knew this guy. He's not a white supremacist. What he is is an asshole. A loser still living the high school life 12 plus years late.

I don't know him personally but I've seen the other losers he associates with all over social media crying out for undeserved justice.

From what I gather he was "trolling" and "goofing" with those at the rally. Cops wanted to ask him questions and he bolted. Cornered him in an alley and shot him. Metal pipe? They claim it was a bike seat.

I don't really care about the story or the guy. Apparently he is in a long term relationship with a woman of another race.

Until more information is forthcoming, we've changed the title of the article to fit our current understanding of what occurred yesterday.

Kennedy didn't return immediately and initially when he did he posted sporadically, however for the last few months he has been posting on Free Dominion at the same pace he had been before he was banned for a single day.

Edward Kennedy continues to be a member in good standing at Free Dominion.

Old Haunts of the Heritage Front

We're currently waiting for some information regarding a couple of upcoming articles, but we thought that we would revisit our project concerning documenting the history of the Canadian racist movement. The primary focus of our research has been on the years 1989 to 1994 under the leadership of Wolfgang Droege which coincided with the rise and decline of the Heritage Front, though there was a brief mini-resurgence in 2001 under the watch of Marc Lemire.

Two weeks ago a couple of ARC members began documenting some of key locations in the early history of the Heritage Front in Toronto. There are rumors that some of the locations, such as the, "Zündel Haus" may be torn down to make way for condos so we decided to record them while they still exist.

Answering Free Dominion: Part II

The JDL fundraiser for Free Dominion took place about a week ago and was attended a who's who of the Canadian right-wing blogosphere as well as some of the more active members of Free Dominion. Prior to this, Connie responded to our last article:

Now, our Free Dominion friend here couches the violence of the JDL in more respectable terms; they represent the "warrior race" that is befitting of the Jewish people. Our Free Dominion friend also goes on to claim that the reason why we or anyone else would be concerned about the JDL is because we are closet anti-Semites who want Jews to be powerless in the face of those who would harm them.

It's a ridiculous accusation (especially directed at us) but this is sort of Free Dominion's schtick.

It  might be instructive, however, to learn how the JDL earned the honor of being referred to as warriors since the Canadian branch of the JDL has engaged in the very activities that Free Dominion has accused (and condemned) us at ARC of engaging in.

But we begin at the beginning.

Heritage Front Project

As we're in a bit of a lull right now (and that is decidedly a very good thing) we thought we would start some work on a project that we had considered long ago but had put on the back burner. However we will need the help of our readers.

In 1989, perhaps the most "successful" hate group in Canadian history, the Heritage Front, was formed. It's heyday was between 1989 and early 1994, though it did continue in a much weakened state until 2005 when it finally ceased to exist.

We would like to document, as much as we can, the history of this group.

We are looking for examples of Heritage Front propaganda, newspaper clippings, and photos of the group (individual members, meetings/rallies held, encounters with antifa, informal gatherings, etc) between 1989 and 2005, with a special focus on the years between 1989 and 1999 (though the period between 2001 and 2005 is also of particular interest).

Since the Heritage Front was founded almost a generation ago now, we'd sort of like to collect this information before much more of it is lost to time.We know that there are antifa and former HF members (who have rejected racism since they left the hate group) who have items that have not yet found their way into the public realm as yet and, from an historical point of view, these items would be of great interest to not only ourselves, but academia.

Calgary Rally

We were asked if we wouldn't mind posting an announcement regarding the anti-racist rally coming up this weekend in Calgary.

Anti-Racist Action Calgary is calling on their fellow Calgarians to join us this year in again rallying against racism and other forms of discrimination on March 24th, 2012.    

While March 21 is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, it falls on a Wednesday this year.    

Further, the racist gang Blood and Honour (B&H) has stated that it plans to hold "White Pride" marches on March 24 in various Canadian cities. Whether or not this includes Calgary will not stop us from being prepared. As we have stated in the past, even if neo-Nazi cowards do not show up, we will still rally.    

In order to commemorate March 21, to celebrate our diversity, to stand in solidarity with all victims of racist violence, and to oppose B&H if they do show up, please join us on March 24 at 10am at City Hall.

Kyle McKee and a Short History of Self-Destruction

In December 2009, Kyle McKee was arrested and charged with attempted murder after being accused of planting an IED at the residence of a rival bonehead (that bonehead, fyi, is currently in jail accused of murder himself now). As a result, the March 2010 "White Pride Day" event was cancelled.

In early February, McKee was jailed as a result of uttering threats directed at Jason Devine. His sentence resulted in him missing the March 2011 "White Pride Day" event, though given how poorly it went, he really didn't miss a hell of a lot.

One might think that given his very recent history, McKee might decide to modify his behavior so as not to end up in jail again.

One MIGHT think that, but then they are called boneheads for a reason.

We received a message yesterday noting that Kyle McKee and another bonehead were spotted outside the Devine family's home again seig heiling. Now, in and of itself that might not be a crime (though it does say a great deal about the character of a person who would choose to emulate the most reviled political/racial ideology of the past 90 years), but coupled with his recent history and a strong suspicion that he may have been involved in a home invasion and assault, it seems that his efforts to try and intimidate Mr. Devine is very much criminal in nature.

And one also has to wonder how bad the company at these rallies are if McKee would rather spend the event behind bars?

Yes, the Conservatives won a majority (Sparky is pleased, though the rest of are not). Yes, it was a historic night for the NDP, now the Her Majesty's Official Opposition. Yes, the Liberals, the "natural governing party" were humiliated. Yes, the Bloc was absolutely destroyed. And finally yes, the Green Party has their first elected member.

We realize the significance of this election and that more knowledgeable and politically astute people than we will be analyzing the outcome for years to come as the political landscape has been turned on its head.

However, our interests are focused on one race in particular.

A self-professed white supremacist, who had two attempted murder charges dropped last May in connection with a homemade bomb being planted outside a northeast condo, is back in jail.

Kyle Robert McKee, 25, an alleged member of the Aryan Guard, was in court on Wednesday to face four charges, including assault, uttering death threats, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public and being disguised while committing an indictable offence.

Okay, we were less fun and more serious with this one (sent it to our friends at the One People's Project for inclusion on their website). Hey, we can do classy too!

Kyle McKee, leader of the racist gang formerly known as the Aryan Guard, is currently jail facing charges stemming from threats made against Jason Devine, spokesperson for ARA Calgary. Jason recounts the incident in his own words:

As we passed the Paradise Lanes bowling alley I looked to my right and saw Kyle's truck slowly driving by. A person with a black jacket and a black ski mask was in the passenger side and the driver was dressed the same (the ski masks looked just like the ones worn in the home invasion). The passenger was holding a brown bat and tapping in on his door. The truck sped up and stopped at the corner blocking us from crossing over or turning without going right by it.

Then the one with the bat yelled "Hey Jason, what's going on? What are you doing?" I could tell by the voice it was Kyle and he was staring intently at me the whole time and visibly angry. I had seen a man in a jeep a few feet behind us so I turned and started to sprint towards him in order to tell him to phone the police as some shit was probably going to happen. However, before I reached him I noticed that the door to Kyle's truck had not opened or closed, so I thought maybe was wasn't going to get out (though the fact he was doing this shit in day light, ski-mask, bat, his OWN truck, had me a bit spooked, like "he's crazy!"). 

I turned back and walked towards the truck keeping my distance. Kyle then asked "Do you want to say hello or goodnight?" I replied "What?" And he said the same question again, but with more vehemence, and emphasis on GOODNIGHT. He also beat the bat against the car rapidly and forcefully when he said that. He then asked "Do you want another visit? Do you want another visit at you home?" I replied no and they sped off. Jon and I saw the license plate when they drove off confirming what we already knew. Bonnie seen the truck speed away and immediately called my cell telling me she seen Kyle's truck and asking if we were ok. We quickly turned the corner, jumped in the van and sped home in case they tried anything there.

We really, really, really want to take credit for this, but it was sent by a reader and refers to our previous article reporting Kyle McKee's arrest.

We did feel the need to share it though, because it's funny and because it is emblematic of our level of maturity anyways.

Kyle McKee Is In Jail

First, there's a story on the bonehead assaults in Edmonton on CBC. Nothing new really, as it covers everything we had learned earlier. However, the good news we wanted to share but which we had alluded to in our last article before discussing the Edmonton assault is that Kyle McKee is in jail.

McKee was picked up a few days ago and has been behind bars since his arrest. We assume that his incarceration is in large part as result of the threats made against Devine, but perhaps there's more to it than even that.

McKee's bail hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.

Time will tell what this will mean for March 19 when Blood & Honour (Aryan Guard) was planning on organizing a rally in Calgary. We're not sure the city needs or wants another black eye that the last march in 2009 resulted in.

March 19 Related News

Last night we received an email concerning Jason Devine. Seems that while he, his wife and a friend were out flyering yesterday, Kyle McKee drove by and threatened him. An excerpt of his encounter is included:

McKee might be getting more stupid as he becomes more brazen which we think will inevitably lead to a fall, however we are concerned with those who might be hurt along the way.

We're also aware that there are people from outside of Alberta who claim they plan on attending the March 19 rally. We suspect a group of ATB members on Hamilton may be coming, and the following news article suggests some individuals from B.C. might make the trip:

Jason Devine, Bonnie Devine, and Other Male Attacked in Home Invasion

We had heard yesterday that Mr. Devine and other anti-racist activists had flyered a neighborhood where Aryan Guard members were believed to have lived.

Last night Jason, his wife Bonnie and another male staying with them were attacked in their home by five individuals. The Devine's four children were asleep and unharmed thankfully.

A Calgary anti-racism activist was the victim of a violent home invasion overnight.Police are looking for several suspects after five masked men armed with blunt weapons broke into a home in the 5400 block of 8 Avenue SE just after 1 a.m. Monday. 

The men were armed with bats and hammers when they barged into the house.

London Pride Parade Goes On Without A Hitch

Earlier this month we wrote about David Ruud and the remnant of the Northern Alliance effort to stage an anti-Pride protest this past weekend.

By most accounts, it went pretty much as we expected.

Now this isn't to say that no one showed up. Perhaps they did, however no one we've spoken to or who have contacted us saw hide nor hair of them, which sort of misses the point of a public protest.

Of course the usual suspects did show up with their poorly made signs quoting biblical texts condemning homosexuality. At this point they're just a part of the spectacle right now and are as entertaining as the parade itself. Still, there were those who did confront these protestors in a manner that we in the Collective can respect and would hope others would emulate.

The following were borrowed (shamelessly stolen without asking permission but hoping that the subjects and photographer don't mind because they're really funny) from some of those protesters. We especially like the look of anti-pride protester who doesn't quite seem to get what's going on in the last photograph:

Aryan Guard Offer Anti-Racists Information

Our readers are well aware that Kyle McKee was released on probation after having plead guilty to possessing bomb making materials. The more serious charges, including attempted murder, were dropped however, which was a bit disappointing.

Now that McKee has been released, it seems that he's interested in settling some scores with the people who put him behind bars for half a year:


Internecine conflict amongst boneheads isn't exactly a new thing (so much for the New Orleans Protocol, eh Davey?) so this post on Stormfront shouldn't be all that surprising. However, what might come as a surprise to some is the efforts of McKee and company to reach out to anti-racists by offering them said information.

On Nexopia, we noticed the following offer from John Marleau:

Of course, we were more than a bit intrigued. So we looked at the documents in question. It is, indeed, the statement made by one of the targets of the attack for which McKee and a 17 year old youth were arrested. When asked why Marleau would post this link, he responds:


Keep in mind, Marleau at one time claimed to care deeply for this woman. Now he's hell bent on destroying her. Considering his past record dealing with women who have spurned him, we shouldn't be shocked. Still, user "R4WH4TE" poses an interesting question, doesn't he? Marleau is posting documents containing the address and phone number of a crime victim (no matter what we ourselves think about her or her politics). No worries though. She moved. She no longer lives at the address mentioned or has that phone number. Still, a thinking person might consider the obvious problem with posting addresses and phone numbers of people who no longer have then, in that somone else DOES now have the address and phone number:


Marleau ain't exactly a deep thinker now, is he? And he doesn't seem to concerned that someone completely innocent and unaware might now be subject to harassment, so long as Carolyne is exposed:


But here's another problem for McKee and Marleau. Even if Carolyne does lie about 90% of the time in the police statement, the 5% remaining still reflects very poorly on both of them, as observed by another Nexopia member:


So here we have a bonehead willingly giving information about another "White Nationalist" to anti-racists with the desire that it be posted here on this blog (knowing full well that not only anti-racists, but also boneheads are frequent readers).

We have to ask the boneheads who read this blog then, is that okay with you? Is it okay that one of yours is willing to turn over information to.... well.... to us?

Think about that for a moment and let it sink in for a bit.

And here's another thing to think about. We aren't the only anti-racist group that Marleau and McKee have been shopping this document around to.

As our readers know, and despite claims by some of our detractors to the contrary, we in the ARC Collective are not members of Anti-Racist Action. We do maintain a positive dialogue with a number of anti-racist groups, the ARA included, but we have a different vision a different comfort level with state authorities than they do. We respect their position as they respect our.

Yesterday, we received a message on our Facebook account from Jason Devine who was a bit confused. You see, he received four phone calls from Kyle McKee and his friend, "Maxim Lee." The last call, in which he actually engaged in a conversation, resulted in an offer of the documents that Marleau has posted on his Facebook profile. All that would be needed would be for Mr. or Mrs. Devine to provide an email address. Mr. Devine wanted to know if this was serious or some sort of a ruse (and given the number of times his residence has been firebombed and vandalized over the past two years, who could blame him?).

So, to summarize, John Marleau and Kyle McKee have offered to provide information on other, "White Nationalists" to us, to other anti-racists, and to the ARA, or to put in a way sure to be provocative, the communists.

Let THAT sink in for a while, ladies and gentlemen.

Isn't it ironic that while the remnants of the Aryan Guard are calling Carolyne a rat for providing information to the police regarding a possible attempted murder, Marleau and McKee seem unconcerned about providing information to people whom they view as one of their key enemies?

And we pose this question to the boneheads who read this blog. If McKee and Marleau are willing to sell out their own even if the people they are selling out are scum (and believe us, the members of WEB are scum), who else might they be willing to inform on in order to hurt reputations or to get out of their way? Do you think that they can really be trusted?

We'll leave you to ponder these and other questions.

We should note that the Devines didn't take "Maxim" or Kyle up on their offer.

But we're sure our readership are all very anxious to see the documents that Marleau and McKee were willing to provide. We have them (both from Marleau's picture album he made available for general viewing on his Facebook profile and emailed to us from another, "White Nationalist") and they are very interesting documents. 1. We're concerned about the legality of publishing this document.
2. There's a great deal of personal information that remains unredacted, including the name of the 17 year old co-accused as well as the address and phone number already mentioned. Sure, we could do it ourselves, but that's hardly the point.

Our final reason is perhaps most important personally.

We don't dance to the music played by boneheads. They want to go to war with each other, great. We'll happily follow it and update our readership on their pathetic lives (because it is so damn funny now). But don't think for a single moment that they'll be able to use us in their efforts. What we do we do on our terms.

More on Craig Cobb Firing: The Bill Noble Comedy Hour

"boom booom antifa, soon bullets will be flying "

The above message was left for us under the post regarding Craig Cobb concerning his firing from Xentel. We didn't allow the comment to pass moderation and hadn't initially intended to publish it, however given the recent posts by Bill Noble on Stormfront regarding the Cobb protests, we figured that it would serve as an interesting and telling counterpoint to the claims now being made by Bill Noble:


Here, Noble writes that the only reason why Cobb's residence would be published would be to harm him. He claims that anti-racists, "are well known for their firebombing and other forms of assault against their victims."

Look as we might, during the past decade we can't find a single instance of racists who's address has been who have been subject to any form of physical abuse or vandalism. When we look at the past 20 years, we find a single instance, that being the incident that occurred at Heritage Front member Gary Schipper's home. As for firebombing, we've yet to find a single case were that has occurred. You may try to claim the Zundel arson as having been committed by the ARA, however the only group to have ever claimed responsibility for that crime was an extremist and racist Jewish group with connections the JDL.

On the other hand, we can point to numerous examples in Canada alone during the last couple of years where anti-racists' residences' addresses have been published by racists, and those anti-racists were subject to assaults and firebombings. Jason and Bonnie Devine's home has been firebombed and vandalized on at least three occasions over the past two years. The apartment of the individual who organized the anti-racist rally in Vancouver on March 21 was attacked with some sort of incendiary device. Hell, racists are even attacking other racists, as the allegations concerning Kyle McKee suggest. And these are just a start.

During our research, we even came across an example of someone who's contact information YOU published was subject to harassment Billy:

It was only a matter of days before a Creator calling himself "Exterminance" took a trick out of Matt Hale's old playbook [we should mention that Noble, who not long ago was posting online as "Exterminance" was not a member of the Creativity Movement]. He posted an address, cell and telephone number for an Anthony Evola outside Chicago, "In Case Anyone Wants To Say Hi." Within hours, threatening messages had started to pop up on Anthony Evola's answering machine.

Just one problem: It was the wrong Anthony Evola.

Given this reality, we have to wonder what Billy means when he writes, "only if they taste their own medicine can they be made to leave decent human beings alone." What medicine did Mr. Evola have to taste, Billy?

And while we're at it, you're not saying that Cobb is a "decent" human being, are you? We admit that being decent can be somewhat subjective (one man's saint is another man's sinner), but were not sure how anyone who does this could be considered to be decent by most standards in civil society:

"Rosa Parks was a shitskin communist," he said. "I'm here to celebrate her death."

In another post, Billy addresses another Stormfront member who disputes the claims that Craig Cobb has ever advocated racial genocide on the website he created:

Well, there's a very easy way for our readers to determine the truth of Billy's claim here. While we will not provide the link to the site, we would invite our readers to type, "podblanc" into Google. There, you will find such charming videos as, "Skinhead beatings (best of)" which is a compilation of neo-Nazis attacking and beating minorities (you will also notice that these are often from behind and involve multiple neo-Nazis against a single, often much smaller, individual). You'll also find the video of Russian neo-Nazis who have kidnapped two people who appear to be from the Caucuses, cut off their heads and state that this is a warning of what will happen to other, "non-Russians" living in Russia. We managed to find videos supporting the mass murder of Jews. Of Muslims. Of homosexuals. And this is a site that was created and maintained by our friend, Craig Cobb.

But as we wrote, you needn't take our word for it. Check it out for yourself. You can also head on to VNN and take a look at what he posted there until he was banned (a bit of a spat with Alex Linder) including gems such as these:


Our favourite part of Billy's lament is that our criticism of people like Cobb, himself, the Aryan Guard and other groups is based on circular reasoning. The only reason why we think Billy is "evil" is because of his association with the Aryan Guard. The reason why the Aryan Guard is "evil" is because Bill Noble is a member.

Billy. Baby. That's simply not true.

While the links between the Aryan Guard and the National-Socialist Party of Canada are interesting, those links aren't the reason why we think you all are "evil" (a word used too much and often for the wrong reasons). That's more a case of like minded people coming together in their mutual douchebaggery. No, that we condemn the Aryan Guard has nothing to do with whom they associate with and everything to do with how they behave.

It was an Aryan Guard member who was convicted of assaulting a Japanese immigrant in 2008.

It was a member of the Aryan Guard who attempted to attack an city transit worker he lured into the compartment he was riding in, then attacking the police with the same knife.

It is the founder of the Aryan Guard who is currently behind bars on attempted murder charges.

It is a member of the Aryan Guard who has advocated murdering minorities, including children:


See. No need to invoke the NSPC to explain why you all are scum. You provide ample reasons yourselves why you should be loathed. We could provide more reasons, but I think you get the point.

Finally, and in a blow to Billy's claim that anti-racists represent some sort of great danger, even the boneheads don't believe that's true. On March 15, another well known Canadian bonehead posted a message on our blog. We'll go into more detail, and provide a context for her comment, at a later date, but for now we think the following excerpt should suffice:

Nobody thinks you are dangerous. You've had my email for years, and my last telephone number was in the phone book in Montreal.

We've been saying this for years, but maybe you'll believe one of your own. Who wrote this?

Which brings us back to the message we were sent last week and which we began this post with.

Billy, you and we know who have carried out attacks, firebombings and in some cases murders. It isn't the anti-racists.

And to the person who left us the message, if you think for one moment you're going to intimidate us into silence, you've failed utterly.

Anti-Racist Suffers Attack on Home

Remember a few months ago when the group, Anti-Racist Action Calgary engaged in a poster campaign to expose a member of the Aryan Guard attending the University of Calgary? Well, seems that they have responded in kind:

At 9:50 AM April 2, Bonnie Devine opened the front door of her family’s house to discover 2 poorly-made posters plastered to the front door of their residence.

The posters attempt to defame Jason Devine, a public spokesperson of Anti-Racist Action Calgary (ARA), and ARA itself as an organisation. Besides a sad attempt at slander, the posters are marked by poor grammar.

Most importantly, the posters feature at their bottom the web site address of the Aryan Guard (AG): www.aryanguard.org and their email address: aryanguard-calgary@hotmail.com

While ARA has no problems with such pitiful attempts at attacking us, indeed the free publicity is welcome, plastering the posters on the front door of the Devine family follows in a repeated trail of attacks on their house: a Molotov cocktail thrown at the house, repeated racist graffiti sprayed-painted on the house, a cinder block thrown through the front window and a projectile shot through the children's window.

These posters prove that members of the AG have been targeting the Devine family in their hatred of Anti-Racist Action Calgary, and further lead us to believe that the AG has been behind the previous attacks listed above.

While this effort by whom we presume to be the remnant of the Aryan Guard is actually sort of funny, the next incident is certainly not funny at all:

Victim fears neo-Nazi link in suspected bombing of Abbotsford home

Abbotsford police are reporting that accelerant used in a fire that damaged a home in the 33900 block of Old Yale Road at 2 a.m. Monday had a fused device connected to it.

The presence of the device caused police investigators to request outside assistance, said APD spokesperson Const. Ian MacDonald.

“We didn’t relinquish the investigation, we asked for some expertise from the [RCMP] bomb squad,” he said.

A resident of the house in question, Maitland Cassia, identified himself as a member of Anti-Racist Action, and said he was jolted out of bed by what he described as a loud “blast.”

Cassia fears the blast that started the fire was in retaliation for an anti-Nazi rally he helped organize that took place at New Westminster’s Braid SkyTrain Station on March 21.

The rally generated media coverage and subsequent photos from the event splashed Cassia’s name and face across several Lower Mainland newspaper websites, making him a target, he said.

He said he is fearful of further retaliation, and planned on moving out of the house immediately.

Members of the bomb squad were on scene Monday, said MacDonald, and collected several items of interest in evidence bags and containers.

Heavy black scorching, and damage to the home’s exterior could be seen adjacent to a door situated at the side of the home.

Debris was blown across the yard for several metres in an outward pattern from the door.

Police suspect the device was used as a way to create distance when the accelerant was set off, and are treating the incident as arson.

The Braid rally in March drew hundreds of anti-Nazi protestors, and was in response to a planned white supremacy, neo-Nazi rally that never materialized.

Online sites quoted Cassia declaring the rally a “victory” for those opposed to racial discrimination.

MacDonald said police have no prior interaction with the residents, or the address in question, and are trying to determine what potential motives for the incident might exist.

“We would obviously investigate any suggestions that the [residents] may have for potential reasons for [the incident], but I couldn’t comment further on what has transpired here,” said MacDonald.

We've held off on publishing the news about the bombing in the hopes that we'd be able to pick up on some chatter online or from some sources relatively close to racist groups based in B.C. (our B.C. intel is in it's relative infancy at this moment) but now we're hoping that our readers are able to provide some more details.

It is interesting, however, that the folks who run FreeDom have accused the ARA of being an ultra-violent domestic terrorist group involved in arson, murder and all sort of nasty things (we've yet to see any truth to these accusations; the Zundel fire in the 1990s, which a few have tried to link to the ARA, was actually claimed by a far-right Jewish hate group linked to the Kahane movement and the JDL). But when actual acts of violence are committed against the ARA members, real domestic terrorism is given a pass or, in at least one case, justified. Just as we here at ARC would condemn crimes committed against both members of the ARA and members of any racist group, we would hope that others would offer the same condemnations.
