Why is ancient art often so 'simple'?

If, as i presume, people 4000 years ago (say, in ancient Egypt) were biologically identical to a modern person, why does their art look so, for lack of a better word, simple? I'm not saying that it actually IS simple, or primitive, I know there was enormous skill involved in producing f.e. those paintings inside Egyptian tombs, but most of what I've seen are two-dimensional paintings and - to today's standards - not very realistic figurines or statues.

It just seems kind of strange to me that you would produce those kind of things when you're capable of more. The Greeks and Romans were obviously capable of making very life-like statues, why don't we see similar things more often?

In a similar vein, I also know of a few more realistic Roman mosaics and stuff, why did medieval artists in particular 'revert' to more simplistic styles?

Is it all just a question of taste? Was it too expensive, too labour intensive?

(If there's a definitive answer that'd be cool, but I'm guessing this is more of an open discussion topic, so any opinion on this is much appreciated, I've been thinking about this for days...)

The Ancient Art and Science of Awakening
r/awakened

Awakening is the realization that far more can be found in direct experience than any concept, belief system, or narrative. The process of awakening is an ever-unfolding one, a deepening of that which is beyond all words and thoughts. We are in service of discovering that for ourselves.

The Ancient Art and Science of Awakening

With a little tolerance given for terms, we want to awaken, become enlightened, to transcend, to wake up to the reality of existence ‘As It Is’… to remember who we are: our eternal selves.

This is an ancient art and science.

Science because the nature of reality and path of remembrance is one. Art, because each of us is unique and therefore walk the path back differently.

We know nothing more today in regard to the path of enlightenment than the ancient saints and sages, who by revelation and experience, laid it out for those who would follow. Beware of ‘new’ ideas, as institutions and others of power have always been able to inject false information into the mass mind; no more so than today.

The true path leads to awareness of the self and the Divine, and the eternal relationship between the two. We do not become nothing, nor everything, nor empty; and neither do we become the Godhead. We simply remember our nature, as eternal, full in knowledge, completely blissful and with individual form.

Waking up to this truth doesn’t cause one to detach from life, but to detach from illusion. We may then proceed with an awareness of the true nature of things; we proceed with revived vision.

Knowing the true nature of our self and relationship with the Divine, we naturally then take supreme care of the body we’ve been given and engage it in activities that continue to aid our journey and service, and help others back to reality.

It’s time to look within, to look at the path we’re on; to audit yourself. The true path has characteristic traits that are felt, experienced and seen, for example:

* When you see others, do you see the eternal individual and Divine within, or the gender, nationality, body and other material characteristics in front of you.

* When you look in the mirror, do you see the radiant, powerful, eternal soul, transcendent and blissfully aware and full in knowledge, or do you see an individual with defects and unfulfilled desires.

The symptoms help you determine results within yourself and others.

All living beings, in all types of bodies, are of the same eternal nature. The suffering that accompanies their misidentification with the temporary body is a great tragedy and so a great compassion develops in those who have awakened to truth. They act differently.

It is beyond religion, it’s beyond any particular spiritual path, it is the reality of our eternal position and our loving relationship with the Divine where we flourish.

Just like the grain of sand will never become the whole beach, you will never become everything. Because the soul is immutable, you will never become nothing. And you will never become empty, because the soul’s design is for activities of love.

All such false pursuits will fail.

As a green bird landing in a green tree may seem to disappear, but factually has not, you do not merge with the Divine Super Soul - in a type of spiritual suicide - but merge in intention, in loving reciprocations.

When this ancient science is again established, and expressed according to our unique nature, all misconceptions automatically disappear, and your real life begins; even while here, among those still deep in illusion.

May you find an effective path to truth, and give up all other dead ends that will only take away the years. Now is the time to enquire into the absolute truth, as the great saints and sages have done since the beginning of time.
