Thoughts on a non-South African learning Afrikaans?

American here. Last year, as sort of a joke between me and a coworker, I started teaching myself some Afrikaans, mostly via a couple apps. Ended up enjoying it and have stuck with it, I have since bought a book on the language and have started watching some shows and movies to try and test my listening comprehension (I love Systraat, dit is baie lekker).

Would anyone here find it odd that someone with zero ties to South Africa would have an interest in learning Afrikaans? I'm pretty much learning it only because it's really fun and I like the way it sounds. I don't know any South Africans and have never been to the country (although I'm sure it would be fun to visit some day).

Baie dankie! :)

Learning Afrikaans

Hi all! I’d like to learn how to speak Afrikaans.

My partner is an Afrikaans speaking South African, playing rugby in the UK. Lots of his friends also speak Afrikaans, but kindly speak English when around myself (as that’s the language I speak).

I downloaded Duolingo but was disappointed they didn’t have Afrikaans as a language option to learn.

Has anyone got some advice on the best way to learn the language? My knowledge so far is limited to the odd phrase and swear words! I would love to learn more.

Ryanair criticised for requiring South Africans to speak Afrikaans in order to fly - Afrikaans is the native language of most White and Coloured South Africans, but is not understood by the majority of Black South Africans

I speak Afrikaans, how can I help duolingo?

I've searched the subreddit and found a handful of people that wants to learn Afrikaans. I'm no linguist but have been translating voluntarily as a hobby for Google translate and a game called Rust.

Looking for help in learning afrikaans

Hi guys,

I was born in SA but moved to the UK when I was 2 - 1998. My parents have always spoken Afrikaans to each other. Long story short, they only wanted a language they knew so could talk without me knowing but I've always wanted to speak afrikaans so I'm learning now, I'm getting there and learning little by little but I'm finding it hard to continue my learning without having someone to speak it too.

I'm looking for a friend or someone who could help me in my speaking afrikaans.

Please either comment or send me a message on here if you'd like to be that person 😁

byvoorbaat dankie ❤️

I plan to start learning Afrikaans (any app suggestions welcome) just throw me some tips and what to expect on this journey and what I can do to overcome my horrid Inglesh ack-cent innit bruv.

Do I need to learn Afrikaans?

Looking to visit Cape Town but it also looks like somewhere I'd love to live a bit longer-term if I ever became a digital nomad (worked from my laptop). Will I get by fine in just English or is Afrikaans a requirement? What language do people use in shops, restaurants, etc? Thanks

Edit: Thanks everyone, you’ve been a great help! I was just confused by SA’s 10+ official languages lol

Learning Afrikaans in Austria

Hi there! My wife is South African, so I started learning Afrikaans to better understand her family. Unfortunately in Austria I could only get like a little travel guide, with very little grammar and 50-100 sentences. That worked for a couple of weeks, but I know this one by heart already.

I would really like to learn the language more properly. We do not have Afrikaans courses (anymore), there is no Afrikaans on Duolingo or similar (and the other apps teach bs according to my wife). So I wanted to ask: Does anyone have ideas where else I could look?

Do you know any helpful Youtubers? A podcast? Do you think asking the SA embassy in Austria could work (figured they might have old books or connections)?

Dankie!

Learning Afrikaans

My parents fluently speak Afrikaans, but they stopped teaching me when I was young, and as a result I only know certain words, phrases, and am terrible at grammar. I can barely speak it or read it, and am ok at understanding it.

I was wondering what the best apps are out there to help learn Afrikaans.

I live in the UK but take trips there every few years, and would also just love to be able to speak it more.
