Hugo the hornet is the mascot for the Charlotte hornets. His Facebook page lists him as male, he has a male name, but he also has a stinger. Only females have stingers as they are modified ovipositors. This means he must have been born a female, and later transitioned to a male before becoming the mascot for the Charlotte Hornets. I suspect this was kept quiet at the time because transgender individuals dealt with even more bigotry back in 1988 when he was introduced, than they do today. The other possibility is that he is a male hornet, and does not actually have a stinger. This makes sense if you look at their record.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Charlotte Hornets forward Miles Bridges turned himself in on Friday after an arrest warrant was issued for an alleged protection order violation stemming from a domestic violence case last year.
Bridges turned himself in early in the morning in Lincoln County, a suburb of Charlotte. He was accompanied by his attorney, according to Larry Seagle, the public information officer for the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
Bridges appeared before a district court judge and was released on $1,000 bond.

The hornets are currently at 20-18 whilst the celtics are 20-19.
Crazy to think at the start of this year I don't think a single person would have put the Hornets above the Celtics at any point of the season and yet here we are after the all star break with the bean town boys a .5 of a game behind. Hayward and Rozier must be feeling vindicated.
