All That Jazz is a truly special film

Bob Fosse made his masterpiece with this film, and Roy Scheider shows why he's one of the best yet underrated actors to ever grace cinema. The cinematography pops in each frame, the music is engrossing, the dance numbers are iconic and get you out of your seat, and the character Joe Gideon is a tragic tale of the nature of showbiz. The hospital scenes have a somber tone, acting as the eulogy to his life as his eventual death is on the horizon. Joe is a man whose ambition for perfection is worth cheering on, but also acts as cautionary tale of pushing yourself to the brink of exhaustion. A truly worthwhile film to own on Criterion.

Which song is forever linked to a movie for you now?

I heard Big Poppa the other day by Biggie and all I could think of was the movie Hardball. Similarly Endless Love now officially belongs to Happy Gilmore, in my head at least.

A few other examples to me are:

  • Superstar by the Carpenters in Tommy Boy

  • Stuck in the Middle with You in Resevoir Dogs

  • Nightcall by Kavinsky in Drive

  • Bohemian Rhapsody in Wayne’s World

What songs belong to a movie to you?

That being said, if whichever one of you checked out Basic from the Tallahassee library can return it as soon as possible, I'd appreciate it.

I played football for 15 years. It's a fast paced, complex game. To see slow motion used so prominently in Varsity Blues was frustrating, along with the alt-rock music, flimsy dialogue and outrageous play calling. Terrible soap opera. Ridiculous sports movie. Flag on the play.

Writing a screenplay where the main characters are making a sequel to a movie…

Would be confusing to title my movie as if it were a real sequel? For example, the main characters are creating a sequel to “Pink Elephants” so my movie would be titled “Pink Elephants 2”. Fake title obviously but should I not do that? Would it be confusing?

Best film vs favorite film from your favorite director(s)

I love Fincher and I personally think Zodiac is his best. But The Social Network is definitely my favorite from him. I credit it with sparking an interest in computer science which has led me to my current career - that and it's just endlessly rewatchable. Alfonso Cuarón's best is Roma, but my favorite will always be his Harry Potter movie. Just an all round fantastic kid's movie with a spooky Halloween-esque atmosphere. Nostalgia probably plays a huge role with that lol.

I was 7 years old when Total Recall (1990) Came out. Its the first movie I can remember that I was completely hyped up to see. The commercials had me begging my mom to take me when it came out. Sadly she didn't. But when it came out on VhS my Aunt rented it and I watched it Late at night on a Friday night Great memory .

What's a famous/classic movie that you notice is slowly beginning to be forgotten about?

All pieces of media eventually fade into obscurity as time passes. Some more quickly than others. So what are iconic older movies you've noticed less and less people talk about or have even seen as you disuss movies with others? For me, it's the original Point Break from 1991, one of my favorite action movies. But with me being Gen Z, I don't think I've ever met anyone my age (or all the way up to 10 years older) who have seen it. I find myself referencing it often and my peers almost always seem to have never heard of it. Sad because I love that movie.

What are your picks?
