The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi, Florence. "Struttura sì grande, erta sopra e' cieli, ampla da coprire con sua ombra tutti e' popoli toscani". by Alive_Atmosphere_311 in ArchitecturePorn

First thing I thought of too, despite actually having been there in real life. Being able to scale it in the game gave it a different type of intimacy that I didn't have when visiting. Not better, just different.

Well then he needs to take that up with the performers that like to have people in the parade around their floats.

Downvote me all you want, but I'm glad it is the way it is, and I'm obviously not the only one.

We've been going to different caribanas then. I have literally been invited into the parade by performers on the floats

Niger: President Mohamed Bazoum calls on US for help after coup by Gopu_17 in worldnews

[–]grassytoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But that might just be for us english-native speakers (assuming you are one too). But when I think about how the word would be spoken in french (which I only learned as an adult), it would sound like what we've heard this past week.

So I'm guessing that's how it's always been pronounced among francophones.

Edit: and using the french pronunciation seems to be an easy way out of problematic word associations, so I guess that's why we're hearing that version now, instead of what we grew up with.

[–]grassytoes 38 points39 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I grew up pronouncing it nigh (as in "the end is nigh") and ger (like the first 3 letters in germ).

But, apparently that's wrong. What I've learned this past week is that it's more like knee-jare, where the j is really soft, almost, but not quite, like an "sh" sound.

Which makes sense, since it's a french-speaking country.

Well, that's kind of how it's supposed to be; not the unsafe part, but rather, the crowd participation. It's not supposed to be one of those parades where spectators stand behind the fences and watch. They want people dancing inside the parade.

It didn't even used to have fences, but when they added them, it was kind of a joke. I've never been to a caribana where I didn't merge with the parade.

Cornel West Owes More Than Half a Million in Unpaid Taxes by BigDaddyCoolDeisel in politics

[–]grassytoes 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just something I heard, but I was told he was pretty butt-hurt over how little influence he got in the Obama years. He saw himself as a big name who should obviously have some clout in the first black president's circle.

So maybe this current thing is just his hurt ego taking charge.

But yeah, whatever the reason, I've also lost respect.

Anyone else struggle with Ubisoft-connect after it updated itself ? (Lutris) by Faustrecht in linux_gaming

Wow, thanks for posting this; I thought I was going crazy. One minute everything is working; I take a break for an hour, try to come back to the game and get this same problem. And I hadn't even rebooted or updated anything.

And thanks, of course, to u/Leopard1907 for the answer.

Arab Slave Trade Routes in the East Africa where 17 million Africans were enslaved by Yemeni and Omani Arabs. by KingKohishi in MapPorn

[–]grassytoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The person you replied to specifically mentioned the US. Remember? It's the part where they said "both were bad and should be acknowledged but one has more lasting consequences than the other especially in the US".

Then you asked what the point of that statement was, and I answered in the context of the US. In the US, it is not as important for other slave trades to be acknowledged and remembered.

Now do you actually have a counter-argument, or just something else dumb to say?

The point is that the slave trade towards the US needs to be acknowledged and remembered in the US, while for other slave trades it isn't as important to do so.

ChatGPT creator says AI advocates are fooling themselves if they think the technology is only going to be good for workers: 'Jobs are definitely going to go away' by [deleted] in technology

[–]grassytoes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Human Work is going to go away. How bad that is for the common person depends on the country.

For some people (even non-rich people), that's a good thing; AI and robots work for the people. "No jobs" isn't a bad thing if the product of the AI/robots is distributed to everyone.

But for a lot of us in the countries where everything has to be owned by someone, and only shared for a profit, AI/robots will mean an end to many of our livelihoods, and eventually, our bloodlines.

Any idea what's going on at University-Dundas? Thousands of people in black... by estrader22 in askTO

[–]grassytoes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Interesting and/or weird; today was also the last day of Tirgan where there were many Iranians who are openly hostile to the Islamic "Republic" of Iran, and any sort of religious authority in general.

I guess the overlap of people who went to both of these events is pretty small.

eli5: Five years ago, Barbie was a danger to children for portraying unrealistic beauty standards for women, now she's a Feminist icon. What changed? by unprecedentedfoils in explainlikeimfive

[–]grassytoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may not be typical, but I did want to be really muscular, like the absurd superheroes that I saw on TV. And one can find other men who were influenced in the same way at any given gym.

As I got older, I stopped trying to bulk up and do the weights, and got more into cardio and general fitness. As a result, one day, while looking in the mirror, instead of seeing just a skinny dude, I saw Spiderman. Which felt pretty good.

I know the problem is worse with girls, but us boys would have been better off with less Thor and more Peter Parker.

The number of big 5 North American profesional sports teams in each state/province by CarterTheBengalsFan in MapPorn

[–]grassytoes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NFL is better because of better players (because of better pay), but worse in other ways. NFL has more stoppages of play, more time standing around, and less passing.

While CFL has

  • no fair catches (no boring ends to a kickoff)
  • rouges (missed field goals have to be run out of the endzone, or else the kicking team gets a point)
  • drop-kicks (kick a field goal on the fly)
  • a wider and longer field (more room for passing).
  • clock stoppage for most in-field tackles (no running out the clock when there's several minutes to go)

Cost of vitamin d test by icecapped92 in askTO

[–]grassytoes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not an answer to the question, but from what I've read, it is very hard to take too much vitamin D. Like, you'd have to take many, many times the recommended daily dosage. So if I think I'm not getting enough naturally, I just take the daily dosage and don't worry about tests or my exact level.

Wild video shows the moment driver runs down and strikes cyclist in Toronto by jonelliotelliot in toronto

[–]grassytoes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The driver's immediate response was to do the normal human thing and brake when there was someone immediately in front of him.

Then his consciousness takes over and he accelerates into the cyclist. The initial brake, then acceleration is even better proof of malicious intent than the long period of no braking.

Driver Purposely Runs over Cyclist on Yonge (horrifying but not graphic, cyclist gets up) by 1slinkydink1 in torontobiking

[–]grassytoes 58 points59 points  (0 children)

The brake light action makes it painfully clear that the driver did brake at first, then decided to accelerate into the cyclist, and didn't brake again until they had completely run the cyclist over.

What are games that you’d erase your memory to experience for the first time again? by ajpala4 in patientgamers

You can turn the survival elements off now. No scrounging for sustenance just to continue playing.

Even without the survival elements, it's still very much the kind of game you're asking for in your post. An amazing game, but can only be truly enjoyed once.
